BACKGROUND/AIM: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a B-cell tumor usually with indolent clinical course, yet in some cases the course of the disease can be very aggressive. The aim of the research was to determine distribution of patients into prognostic groups based on the International Prognostic Index (IPI) and Folicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI) criteria, as well as to determine the importance of classifying patients into the prognostic groups, since this could potentially have the influence on selection of the treatment modality...

The primary intestinal follicular lymphoma is a rare disease described in the last classification of lymphomas from WHO. It is a localized disease with excellent prognosis. We describe in this article ,a 64 year-old Peruvian female with abdominal pain and delayed vomiting for the last two years, has undergone a partial intestinal resection due to bowel obstruction. There was a well-circumscribed annular tumor. A diagnosis of non-polypoid primary intestinal follicular lymphoma was made. We report the case and review the literature in this article...

CASE: Herein we report a case of a man with a B- cell non-Hodgkin lymfoma, primarily diagnosed by topographic and morfology tokens as lobular breast carcinoma and, as such, it was treated by chemotherapy and endocrine therapy. The treatment resulted in complete remission for 3,5 years. However, the subsequent relapses that arised in retrocrural and left axilary area did not respond adequately to breast cancer targeted chemotherapy. Therefore the patient underwent re-exstirpation of axillary lymph node yielding a surprising histology finding of folicular lymphoma...

INTRODUCTION: In patients with refractory or recurrent follicular lymphoma responding to induction therapy with CHOP or rituximab + CHOP, maintenance treatment with rituximab compared to the "observation" option improves both overall survival and progression-free survival. OBJECTIVE: Estimate whether maintenance treatment with rituximab is a cost-effective intervention compared to the clinical practice of "observing" its evolution. METHOD: HASH(0x3b83528) POPULATION: the EORTC 20981 clinical trial population...

Folicular lymphoma (FL), the second most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, shows considerable heterogeneity in its clinical behavior, representative of a biology that appears increasingly complex and diverse. As our knowledge of the molecular basis of FL increases, we strive for an integration between the bench and clinic that yields treatments based on our scientific understanding and biomarkers that allow us to prescribe treatment rationally. In Section I, Dr. Randy Gascoyne describes the histologic, cytogenetic and biologic features of FL that underlie its clinical variability...

In the majority of presented cases persisted certain diagnostic perplexities even after the careful investigations were performed, which required surgical exploration. For example, carcinomatous pericarditis as the sequel of metastasis from occult thyroid carcinoma and two cases of double malignity (papillary carcinoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma of the thyroid), retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and the clear cells renal carcinoma. All the cases were not successfully solved until the application of highly sophisticated and precise methods of immunohistochemical staining, which without a mistake confirmed our assumed histopathologic diagnosis...

We have studied tissue expression of the cytokine receptors using a high sensitivity biotin-streptavidin system on cryostat sections. We used a panel of monoclonal antibodies from the 6th International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens, namely CD25 (IL-2R alpha), CD95 (FAS antigen), CD116 (GM CSFR), CD117 (SCFR), CD120 alpha (TNFR I), CD120b (TNFR II), CD121a (IL-1R I), CDw123 (IL-3R), CD124 (IL-4R), CD126 (IL-6R), CD127 (IL-7R), CDw128 (IL-8R), CD130 (gpl130), CD131 (IL-3R), CD132 (IL-2R gamma), CD134 (OC-40), CD135 (FLT3/FLK2)...

Hashimoto's disease associated with thyroid cancer is not common. From January 1976 to December 1994, a total of 95 patients with Hashimoto's disease were treated surgically. Six (5 Papillary 1 folicular) of 95 patients had thyroid cancer which was concomitantly revealed pathologically. They were all women with mean age of 30.3 years. The size of tumor was 0.3-2.0 cm. Follow-up for 1-17 years showed that they were all alive and healthy. Two patients were misdiagnosed as having anaplastic carcinoma but the definitive diagnosis by immunohistochemical analysis was thyroid malignant lymphoma (B-cell type)...

Expression of bcl-2 is most commonly associated with the t(14;18) translocation present in most folicular lymphomas (1). More recently, bcl-2 oncoprotein has been identified in normal tissues and in nonhematologic malignancies. In this study, we investigate the use of bcl-2 as a marker to distinguish metastatic breast carcinoma from primary lung and gastric cancers, and we evaluate the role of bcl-2 as an independent prognostic factor in breast carcinoma and its relationship to other breast cancer markers. bcl-2 immunostains were done on 371 adenocarcinomas of the breast, lung, and stomach...

In a complex of 33 multiparametrally verified lymphomas of centrocytic and centroblastic types, the interrelationship of the tumor cells was studied. The ratio between the centrocytes and the centroblasts was independent in many aspects being mostly topical. The centrocytoma regularly showed a tendency to produce a folicular type of organization which manifested a definite polarity even in the cytologically pure variants. The polarity of the follicular structures, however, was given by the transition of the small cohesive centrocytes into the large centrocytes lacking cohesion...

We present markedly decreased radioactivity in the right on a 99mTc-pertechnetate thyroid image in a patient with secondary lymphoma of the thyroid. At autopsy, the right lobe of the thyroid was replaced by lymphoma tissue. Markedly decreased radioactivity on the images may be explained by lymphoma cell infiltration or replacement of thyroid tissue with a resultant attenuation effect as well as interference of the trapping mechanism of the thyroid folicular cell. While cold areas in a radionuclide scintigram may present difficulties in interpretation, a high index of secondary lymphoma suspicion should be made by a combination of the scintigraphic findings and history of malignant lymphoma...
