Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma species. Intestinal and hepatic schistosomiases are the most common forms of chronic disease. We describe a case of a 26-year old patient from Eritrea who was referred to our hospital with abdominal pain and diarrhea. The diagnosis of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis was made by liver biopsy and the patient was treated with praziquantel. Hepatic schistosomiasis is characterised by deposition of schistosomal eggs in the liver which results in a host cell immune response and leads to granuloma formation and neoangiogenesis...

Colonoscopy is generally safe, although expansion of colorectal cancer prevention programs is likely to increase the number of post-colonoscopy complications. We report the case of a 42-year old woman with a prior history of 2 cesarean section deliveries who developed abdominal pain after an otherwise uneventful screening colonoscopy. Urgent exploration revealed closed-loop obstruction involving the terminal ileum, caused by an adhesive band close to the site of her previous Pfannenstiel incision. A systematic review of the literature revealed 11 reports (1985-2008) describing a total of 13 cases of mechanical small bowel obstruction (MSBO) after colonoscopy, 9 of which were confirmed by laparotomy...

Medical publishing has become a pivotal aspect of all stages of career development in medicine in Belgium. Publication pressure is therefore present from the stage of the medical student to the level of the head of an academic medical service. This pressure represents a real danger to commit scientific misconduct, ranging from minor missteps to severe fraud. Recent surveys have shown that scientific misconduct and publication fraud represent an important problem in medical publishing, more than in other scientific fields, also in Belgium...

Valeric acid is a C5 fatty acid, naturally produced in low concentrations by specific members of the microbiota of the lower intestinal tract. Effects of valeric acid on intestinal health have been poorly investigated. Valeric acid derivatives can be produced as glyceride esters and added to broiler feed. In the current study, experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of valeric acid glycerides (GVA) on growth performance, on the morphology of the small intestinal mucosa and on protection against necrotic enteritis...

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) increases in prevalence with age. Although microvascular decompression (MVD) is the most effective long-term operative treatment for TN, its use in older patient populations has been debated due to its invasive nature. Recent studies have demonstrated safety of MVD in older patients; however, efficacy data are more limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between age and pain outcomes following MVD for TN. METHODS: Subjects underwent MVD for TN at our institution between 1/1/2004 and 12/31/2013, had typical TN, and demonstrated neurovascular compression on preoperative imaging...
