INTRODUCTION: Patients with Chronic hypoparathyroidism (CHPT) receiving conventional treatment are exposed to several long-term complications including basal ganglia calcifications, posterior subcapsular cataract, kidney stones, and renal insufficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and the associated factors of these complications in patients with CHPT. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 58 patients with CHPT. All participants underwent physical examination, biochemical assessment (total serum calcium, serum phosphorus, serum albumin, intact-PTH, serum magnesium, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D, serum creatinine, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and 24-hour urinary calcium), slit lamp examination, brain computed tomography scan (CT-scan), and renal ultrasound...

Lymph node (LN) germinal centers (GCs) are critical sites for B cell activation and differentiation. GCs develop after specialized CD169+ macrophages residing in LN sinuses filter antigens (Ags) from the lymph and relay these Ags into proximal B cell follicles. Many viruses, however, first reach LNs through the blood during viremia (virus in the blood), rather than through lymph drainage from infected tissue. How LNs capture viral Ag from the blood to allow GC development is not known. Here, we followed Zika virus (ZIKV) dissemination in mice and subsequent GC formation in both infected tissue-draining and non-draining LNs...

PURPOSE: Fibrotic cataracts, including anterior subcapsular cataract (ASC) as well as posterior capsule opacification (PCO), are a common vision-threatening cause worldwide. Still, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate a miRNA-based pathway regulating the pathological fibrosis process of lens epithelium. METHODS: Gain- and loss-of-function approaches, as well as multiple fibrosis models of the lens, were applied to validate the crucial role of two miR-1225 family members in the TGF-β2 induced PCO model of human LECs and injury-induced ASC model in mice...

BACKGROUND: Complete resection of all visible lesions during primary debulking surgery is associated with the most favorable prognosis in patients with advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer. An accurate preoperative assessment of resectability is pivotal for tailored management. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential value of a modified model that integrates the original eight radiological criteria of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center model with imaging features of the subcapsular/diaphragm and mesenteric lesions depicted on diffusion-weighted MRI, and growth patterns of all lesions, for predicting the resectability of advanced high-grade serous ovarian cancer...

Page's kidney is a condition that occurs due to external renal compression, usually caused by a subcapsular haematoma, generating a renal compartmental syndrome with parenchymal damage and renal perfusion alteration. Classically associated with renal trauma, Page's kidney can also arise after invasive renal procedures, such as renal biopsies or percutaneous nephrostomies. Clinically, it can trigger hypertension due to activation of the renin-angiotensin system induced by hypoperfusion secondary to renal parenchymal compression and can also present with varying degrees of renal function impairment...

Solitary necrotic nodule (SNN) of the liver is an uncommon and benign finding in liver pathology. Typically, it appears as a single and asymptomatic lesion, primarily located at the subcapsular region of the right lobe of the liver. Unfortunately, it is easy to mistake this benign lesion for a primary or secondary neoplastic lesion, making it a potential diagnosis pitfall for liver malignancies. The diagnosis of SNN can be difficult to determine as the imaging findings frequently lack specificity. This brings out the importance of histomorphological examination to accurately identify this lesion, and to rule out any possible malignancies...

Gallbladder perforation is one of the most serious complications of cholecystitis and is rarely seen in 2-11% of cases. Pericholecystic abscesses secondary to gallbladder perforation are rare. Rapid diagnosis is important because of high morbidity and mortalityrates. A subcapsular abscess secondary to gallbladder microperforation is presented on 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography performed for restaging in a patient with maxillary sinus cancer.

The lymphatic system (or lymphatics) consists of lymphoid organs and lymphatic vessels. Despite the numerous previously published studies describing conditions related to perirenal and intrarenal lymphoid organs in the radiology literature, the radiologic findings of conditions related to intrarenal and perirenal lymphatic vessels have been scarcely reported. In the renal cortex, interlobular lymphatic capillaries do not have valves; therefore, lymph can travel along the primary route toward the hilum, as well as toward the capsular lymphatic plexus...

Identification of sentinel node (SN) metastases can set the adjuvant systemic therapy indication for stage III melanoma patients. For stage IIIA patients, a 1.0 mm threshold for the largest SN tumour diameter is used. Therefore, uniform reproducible measurement of its size is crucial. At present, the number of deposits or their microanatomical sites are not part of the inclusion criteria for adjuvant treatment. The goal of the current study was to show examples of the difficulty of measuring SN melanoma tumour diameter and teach how it should be measured...

Thermal ablative techniques such as radiofrequency and microwave ablation are minimally invasive and cost-effective approaches that are currently being adopted as alternatives to surgical resection for primary and metastatic liver malignancies. However, they are considered to be relatively contraindicated for tumors in high-risk locations due to technical difficulties and a perceived increased risk of perioperative complications. Several techniques, including artificial ascites, non-touch multibipolar ablation, and laparoscopically assisted ablation, can be used to improve the outcomes of ablation for high-risk tumors...

Page kidney is caused by the perirenal or subcapsular accumulation of blood or fluid pressing on the renal parenchyma and is a rare cause of secondary hypertension. In this study, we report a case of Page caused by bilateral spontaneous subcapsular renal hematoma, the main manifestations of which were secondary hypertension, multiple serous effusions, and renal insufficiency. After admission, drug blood pressure control was ineffective. After bilateral perirenal effusion puncture and drainage were performed to relieve bilateral perirenal compression, blood pressure gradually dropped to normal, multi-serous cavity effusion (pericardial, thoracic, and abdominal effusion) gradually disappeared, and kidney function returned to normal...

Sorafenib, FDA-approved therapy for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), leads to limited improvement in overall survival. However, it may indirectly impact the expansion and activity of natural killer (NK) cells. While NK cell-based immunotherapies generally exhibit favorable safety profiles, their effectiveness in controlling solid tumor growth is constrained, primarily due to the absence of antigen specificity and suboptimal expansion and persistence within the tumor microenvironment. In this study, we postulated that enhancing NK cell functionality via cytokine activation could bolster their viability and cytotoxic capabilities, leading to an improved therapeutic response when combined with sorafenib...

Posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) frequently develops as a complication in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Despite numerous scientific investigations, the intricate pathomechanisms underlying cataract formation in individuals affected by RP remain elusive. Therefore, our study aims to elucidate the potential pathogenesis of cataracts in an RP model using splicing factor subunit 3b (sf3b4) mutant zebrafish. By analyzing our previously published transcriptome dataset, we identified that, in addition to RP, cataract was listed as the second condition in our transcriptomic analysis...
