While neck dissection is an important primary and adjunctive procedure in the treatment of head and neck cancer, there is a paucity of studies evaluating outcomes. A retrospective review of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was performed to identify factors associated with adverse events (AEs) in patients undergoing neck dissection. A total of 619 patients were identified, using CPT codes specific to neck dissection. Of the 619 patients undergoing neck dissection, 142 (22.9%) experienced an AE within 30 days of the surgical procedure...

Improper patient selection for septal surgery often has been found to result in therapeutic failure, and there needs to be an objective assessment of nasal obstruction before the surgery and for postoperative follow-up that can be applied in the routine otolaryngology practice. The purpose of this study is to assess the usefulness of a cost-effective device for objective measurement of the nasal airway partitioning in selecting patients for septal surgery and for postoperative outcome evaluation. A hospital-based, prospective, observational study was carried out in a tertiary-care teaching institution involving 74 patients waiting for septal surgery...

Dexterous continuum manipulators (DCMs) offer great potential for increasing instrument reach in minimally-invasive surgical procedures. We previously designed and fabricated a tendon driven DCM with a large instrument channel and evenly distributed compliant joints for minimally-invasive skull base surgery and the treatment of osteolysis during hip revision surgery. The evenly distributed compliant joints, in some cases, may limit the reach of the DCM during lesion removal. In this paper, we propose a finite element analysis (FEA) method for optimizing the distribution of the compliant joints based on treatment space requirements determined preoperatively...

Prostate brachytherapy is an intraoperative radiotherapy technique for irradiating prostate tumors by placing radioactive sources inside the prostate. CT image is used to calculate a personalized dose distribution (PDD) while the MRI is used to visualize the tumor and the organs at risk. Therefore, a registration of preoperative MRI and CT is essential since it could improve the overall precision of the treatment planning, the placement of radioactive sources inside the prostate as well as the visualization of the dose distribution with respect to the tumor...

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common tumor in the world, and remains a major public health problem and one of the leading causes of death. Recently many researches have demonstrated that systemic inflammatory response is associated with prognosis and response to therapy in gastric cancer, and the peripheral blood count test can partly reflect the systemic inflammatory response. Based on the peripheral blood count test, there are a lot of research regarding the relation between the platelet count (PLT), neutrophil, lymphocyte, white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with their prognostic role in gastric cancer...
