Large-scale restoration programs in the tropics require large volumes of high quality, genetically diverse and locally adapted seeds from large number of species. However, scarcity of native seeds is a critical restriction to achieve restoration targets. In this paper, we analyze three successful community-based networks that supply native seeds and seedlings for Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado restoration projects. In addition, we propose directions to promote local participation, legal, technical and commercialization issues for upscaling the market of native seeds for restoration with high quality and social justice...

The free-flow pressure controlled uterine balloon (Ellavi UBT; Sinapi biomedical, Stellenbosch, South Africa) allows the expulsion of water from the balloon to reduce volume and pressure control by adjusting the height of the supply bag above the patient. The balloon can be filled to a capacity of 750 mL without requiring expansion pressure. The device is affordable for use in lesser resourced countries with a sales price from the factory of approximately US $6. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved...

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts. CTE has been linked to disruptions in cognition, mood, and behavior. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of CTE can only be made post-mortem. Neuropathological evidence suggests limbic structures may provide an opportunity to characterize CTE in the living. Using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging, we compared select limbic brain regional volumes - the amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus - between symptomatic former National Football League (NFL) players (n = 86) and controls (n = 22)...

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of using a real time clinical decision-support system, "Assisted Fluid Management" (AFM), to guide goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) during major abdominal surgery. We compared a group of patients managed using the AFM system with a historical cohort of patients (control group) who had been managed using a manual GDFT strategy. Adherence to the protocol was defined as the relative intraoperative time spent with a stroke volume variation (SVV) < 13%...

Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have identified widespread and progressive grey matter volume (GMV) reductions in schizophrenia, especially in the frontal lobe. In this study, we found a progressive GMV decrease in the rostral medial frontal cortex (rMFC, including the anterior cingulate cortex) in the patient group during a 6-week follow-up of 40 patients with schizophrenia and 31 healthy controls well-matched for age, gender, and education. The higher baseline GMV in the rMFC predicted better improvement in the positive score on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and this might be related to the improved reality-monitoring...

BACKGROUND: Metformin inhibits cyclic AMP generation and activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which inhibits the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator and Mammalian Target of Rapamycin pathways. Together these effects may reduce cyst growth in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). METHODS: A phase II, double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled trial of 26 months duration. Participants will include nondiabetic adults (n = 96) aged 18-60 years, with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥50 mL/min/1...

BACKGROUND: The serum phosphorus concentration ([P]s) is the sum of EP/Ccr and TRP/Ccr, where Ccr is creatinine clearance and EP and TRP are rates of excretion and reabsorption of phosphate. In chronic kidney disease (CKD), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) mediate reduction of TRP/Ccr, and [PTH] and [FGF23] are linear functions of EP/Ccr. If controls and patients with CKD are considered together, TRP/Ccr is a hyperbolic function of EP/Ccr. Given these observations, we hypothesized that hyperbolas would describe relationships of phosphate reabsorption to [PTH] and [FGF23]...

Although the improved dewaterability and digestibility of primary biosolids subjected to thermal hydrolysis has been studied for decades, there are a surprisingly small number of studies exploring the use of this thermal treatment for digested biosolids that are typically left to settle in large settling lagoons. This is likely because of the high capital and operating costs associated with thermal hydrolysis, coupled with the limited applications and value of the resulting products. However, due to the anticipated increases in the amount of generated biosolids combined with issues surrounding potential environmental release and the limited availability of land for additional lagoons, other biosolids management strategies are being explored...

Melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811 (Hymenoptera, Apidae) is a pollinator of various native and cultivated plants. Because of the expansion of agriculture and the need to ensure pest control, the use of insecticides such as fipronil (FP) has increased. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal doses of FP insecticide on M. scutellaris at different time intervals (6, 12, and 24 h) after exposure, via individually analyzed behavioral biomarkers (locomotor activity, behavioral change) as well as the effect of FP on different brain structures of bees (mushroom bodies, antennal cells, and optic cells), using sub-individual cell biomarkers (heterochromatin dispersion, total nuclear and heterochromatic volume)...

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to explore the Fabry myocardium in relation to storage, age, sex, structure, function, electrocardiogram changes, blood biomarkers, and inflammation/fibrosis. BACKGROUND: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare, x-linked lysosomal storage disorder. Mortality is mainly cardiovascular with men exhibiting cardiac symptoms earlier than women. By cardiovascular magnetic resonance, native T1 is low in FD because of sphingolipid accumulation. METHODS: A prospective, observational study of 182 FD (167 adults, 15 children; mean age 42 ± 17 years, 37% male) who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance including native T1, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), and extracellular volume fraction, 12-lead electrocardiogram, and blood biomarkers (troponin and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide)...

To optimize the shield for neutrons and gamma rays compact and lightweight, a method combining the structure and components together was established employing genetic algorithms and MCNP code. As a typical case, the fission energy spectrum of 235 U which mixed neutrons and gamma rays was adopted in this study. Six types of materials were presented and optimized by the method. Spherical geometry was adopted in the optimization after checking the geometry effect. Simulations have made to verify the reliability of the optimization method and the efficiency of the optimized materials...

A novel and green deep eutectic solvent based liquid phase microextraction (DES-LPME) methodology has been proposed for the assessment of rhodamine B from cosmetic products and water samples. A deep eutectic solvent (DES) consist of tetrabutyl ammonium chloride-decanoic acid (1:2) as extraction solvent and tetrahydrofuran as emulsification agent were used for the microextraction of rhodamine B. The quantitative recoveries were achieved at pH 3 by using 0.3 mL of DES and 0.3 mL of THF. The rhodamine B concentration in last volume was analyzed by mirco-cuvette UV-VIS spectrophotometer at 550 nm...

As marijuana smoking prevalence increases in the U.S. concern regarding its potential risks to lung health has also risen, given the general similarity in the smoke contents between marijuana and tobacco. Most studies have found a significant association between marijuana smoking and chronic bronchitis symptoms after adjustment for tobacco. While reports are mixed regarding associations between marijuana smoking and lung function, none has shown a relationship to decrements in forced expired volume in 1 sec (FEV1) and few have found a relationship to a decreased ratio of FEV1 to forced vital capacity (FVC), possibly related to an association between marijuana and an increased FVC...

BACKGROUND: Total hippocampal volume has been consistently linked to cognitive function and dementia. Yet, given its complex and parcellated internal structure, the role of subregions of the hippocampus in cognition and risk of dementia remains relatively underexplored. We studied subregions of the hippocampus in a large population-based cohort to further understand their role in cognitive impairment and dementia risk. METHODS: We studied 5035 dementia- and stroke-free persons from the Rotterdam Study, aged over 45 years...
