Histidine phosphorylation, the so-called hidden phosphoproteome, is a poorly characterized post-translational modification of proteins. Here we describe a role of histidine phosphorylation in tumorigenesis. Proteomic analysis of 12 tumours from an mTOR-driven hepatocellular carcinoma mouse model revealed that NME1 and NME2, the only known mammalian histidine kinases, were upregulated. Conversely, expression of the putative histidine phosphatase LHPP was downregulated specifically in the tumours. We demonstrate that LHPP is indeed a protein histidine phosphatase...

Thrombomodulin (TM, also known as CD141), which functions as an anticoagulant, is widely expressed on cell surface of a variety of cell types, including human blood cells as well as certain immune cells. To determine whether TM could be a potential marker for OSCC diagnosis as well as a molecular target for OSCC therapy, we examined the expression of TM in an oral cancer tissue microarray with 153 oral cancer tissues. Further, we also analyzed the expression of TM on DCs of 36 OSCC patients and 36 healthy donors...

Background Nivolumab plus ipilimumab produced objective responses in patients with advanced renal-cell carcinoma in a pilot study. This phase 3 trial compared nivolumab plus ipilimumab with sunitinib for previously untreated clear-cell advanced renal-cell carcinoma. Methods We randomly assigned adults in a 1:1 ratio to receive either nivolumab (3 mg per kilogram of body weight) plus ipilimumab (1 mg per kilogram) intravenously every 3 weeks for four doses, followed by nivolumab (3 mg per kilogram) every 2 weeks, or sunitinib (50 mg) orally once daily for 4 weeks (6-week cycle)...

BACKGROUND: There are many options for the reconstruction of frontal sinus wall defect resulting from injury, neoplastic lesions and aesthetic deformities. These mainly include autogenous grafts, allogenous grafts, and alloplastic materials. The aim of the present study is to report the advantages of using autogenous calvarial bone grafts over other reconstruction techniques, in the reconstruction of frontal defects. METHODS: We describe 16 consecutive cases of anterior frontal sinus defects between 2004 and 2015, in which calvarial bone grafts were used...

Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) oncogenic protein that has no intrinsic enzymatic activity or sequence homology to cellular or viral proteins. The oncogenic potential of LMP1 has been ascribed to pleiotropic signaling properties initiated through protein-protein interactions in cytosolic membrane compartments, but the effects of LMP1 extend to nuclear and extracellular processes. Although LMP1 is one of the latent genes required for EBV-immortalization of B cells, the biology of LMP1 in the pathogenesis of the epithelial cancer nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is more complex...

A CT scan was performed on a 67-year-old man newly diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. The scan revealed a low-density lesion in the liver, a left renal nodule, and a right renal cystic mass. Intense F-FDG uptake was observed in the liver lesion and left renal nodule. No abnormal uptake was observed in the right renal mass. In addition, another focal intense uptake was observed in segment VII of the liver. Biopsies revealed intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas in the 2 liver lesions, papillary renal cell carcinoma in the left renal lesion and clear cell renal cell carcinoma in the right renal lesion...

RATIONALE: Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder which etiology is unknown. It is divided into 2 subtypes: the plasma cell variant and the hyaline vascular variant. The most common site is the hilum of the lungs and mediastinum. Castleman disease is often ignored by clinicians because of not frequently encountering in clinical and the lower uptake of F-FDG. Here, we report a case of hepatocellular carcinoma accompanied by Castleman disease in the hilum of the liver, which was misdiagnosed as the lymph node metastasis in F-FDG PET/CT imaging...

Smouldering inflammation, thrombocytosis, and platelet hyper-reactivity are linked to malignancy. The relationships between preoperative diagnostic blood morphology parameters and cancer have been the focus of much interest, because some of these parameters are correlated with advanced cancer stages and poor patient survival rates. This study aimed to perform an observational, retrospective analysis of the intradiversity of blood platelet parameters in patients with different International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages and different histological types of epithelial ovarian carcinomas (EOC), and also an analysis of the overall survival rate...

Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is the most common and devastating type of primary brain tumor, being considered the deadliest of human cancers. In this context, extensive efforts have been undertaken to develop new drugs that exhibit both antiproliferation and antimetastasis effects on GBM. 1,4-Naphthoquinone (1,4-NQ) scaffold has been found in compounds able to inhibit important biological targets associated with cancer, which includes DNA topoisomerase, Hsp90 and monoamine oxidase. Among potential antineoplastic 1,4-NQs is the plant-derived lapachol (2-hydroxy-3-prenyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) that was found to be active against the Walker-256 carcinoma and Yoshida sarcoma...

Although nuclear immunostaining for paired box protein (PAX5) is widely used in practice, its cytoplasmic localization has not been evaluated. Recently we encountered cytoplasmic granular PAX5 staining in rectal well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (WD-NET) in the absence of nuclear staining. We investigated the specificity of this staining pattern for rectal NET (n=21) in comparison with 108 NETs, 1 WD rectal NET with elevated proliferation (WD-NET G3), and 40 poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas from the gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary tract and liver...
