Hydatidosis is a medically and veterinary important parasitic disease that is endemic in many parts of the world. Unilocular hydatid cysts may develop in almost any part of the body. Up to 70% of hydatid cysts are located in the liver, followed by 25% in the lungs. Cerebral hydatidosis is an uncommon manifestation of the disease, occurring in less than 1/1000 infected hosts, yet diagnosis does pose a problem. We have reported an exceptionally rare case of cerebral hydatidosis in cattle. This is the first report to describe the characteristic pathological features of the cerebral hydatidosis in cattle caused by the G1 genotype of Echinococcus granulosus...

Parasitic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) include two broad categories of infectious organisms: single-celled protozoa and multicellular metazoa. The protozoal infections include malaria, American trypanosomiasis, human African trypanosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, amebiasis, microsporidiasis, and leishmaniasis. The metazoal infections are grouped into flatworms, which include trematoda and cestoda, and roundworms or nematoda. Trematoda infections include schistosomiasis and paragonimiasis. Cestoda infections include cysticercosis, coenurosis, hydatidosis, and sparganosis...

In only 2% of all cases of hydatidosis, the cysts are located in the brain. We report a 12-year-old male, a 5-year-old girl and a 19-year-old female consulting for intracranial hypertension and a 13-year-old male consulting for a left hemiparesis. Imaging studies found intra-cerebral cysts with characteristics of hydatidosis in all. All lesions were completely removed surgically and the pathological study of the excised piece confirmed the diagnosis of hydatidosis.

Hydatidosis is an endemic disease in Morocco. Cerebral echinococcosis is a relatively rare entity accounting for only 1-2% of all hydatid cysts in humans. Extradural hydatid cyst of the posterior fossa is a very uncommon site for the disease: only four cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 37-year-old admitted for high intracranial pressure. Brain MRI showed an extradural and extracranial posterior fossa cyst without enhancement after contrast medium injection. Multiple hydatid cysts were removed and the histological examination of the tissue sample confirmed the diagnosis...

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral hydatidosis is a rare larval infection of the central nervous system affecting mostly the children and young adults. CASE REPORT: The authors report a case of a 5-year-old girl harboring a large right frontoparietal hydatid cyst. The imaging studies were not diagnostic for 'cerebral hydatidosis' and were interpreted as 'brain abscess'. DISCUSSION: Attempting for simple cannulation of the lesion through a burr hole drained a clear fluid...

Taenia multiceps is a taeniid cestode that in its adult stage lives in the small intestine of dogs and other canids. In the intermediate hosts, the larval stage of T. multiceps causes coenurosis, a common disease in the CNS of ruminants, which typically leads to the death of the infected animals. Recent research into new methods for control of coenurosis and other taeniid cestode infections such as hydatidosis has identified vaccination as a potentially valuable new tool. In order to test the applicability of vaccination as an approach for control of T...

The hydatidosis is an endemic illness in regions of the Middle Orient, Mediterranean, south of America, north Africa and the Australia. The preferential localization of cyst hydatic is the liver (48%), the lung (36%) and in 6% of cases it localizes in unaccustomed place as the brain. Intracerebral localization is relatively rare, its impact is 1 to 5% of all cases of hydatidose. This localization is the child's appendage with a masculine predominance. The cyst hydatic intracranien is often lone, of localization usually supratentorielle, sometimes infratentorielle...

Cerebral hydatidosis accounts for approximately 1 to 3% of all cases of hydatid disease. Generally, cerebral hydatid cysts are single lesions located in the watershed of the middle cerebral artery. Primary intracranial extracerebral hydatid cysts are extremely rare. Only 2% of hydatid cysts are localized in the skeleton, and of these 3 to 4% are found in the skull. The authors describe the case of a 10-year-old boy who was admitted to their clinic with headache and unilateral focal epileptic seizures. Computerized tomography scanning revealed a right parietal intraosseous hydatid cyst...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Unroofing, cystopericystectomy, or cystic evaluation and omentoplasty have been used in videolaparoscopic treatment in hepatic hydatidosis since 1992. Currently it is shown that videolaparoscopic treatment has been carried out successfully in selected cases. METHODOLOGY: Fifteen hepatic hydatid cysts in 12 cases were treated by videolaparoscopic methods. Formerly in the 5 cases, the cysts were aspirated with a needle designed for a 5-mm trocar, leaving a cystic cavity that was tension-free, then scolicidal solution was injected and aspirated...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic hydatidosis still remains as a serious problem in general surgery. Recurrence and/or secondary hydatidosis rates are up to 25% in the cases treated with surgery alone. Albendazole is the most commonly used drug in the medical treatment of echinococcosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of albendazole using the intraoperative and perioperative periods as dual therapy. METHODS: Fifty-two cases of hepatic hydatidosis were evaluated and treated by dual treatment of albendazole together with surgery...

Intracranial hydatidosis is more common in children than in adults. The most severe complication is anaphylactic response after direct rupture into the subarachnoid spaces. We report a case of brain hydatid cyst that was accidentally drained into the peritoneal cavity and was not complicated by an anaphylactic response or dissemination.
