BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: The Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is a common complication following Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). Although there is no concordance in Literature regarding the etiopathogenic mechanism, various HO risk factors have been recognized, both related to the patient and associated with the surgical procedureLiterature does not consider the use of intra-articular drainage as a possible risk factor. Our hypothesis is that this item can contribute to the development of HO...

METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 185 osteosarcoma patients treated with the four drugs mentioned above. A total of 93 patients received the Italian therapeutic treatment (IOR-OS/N-5: Instituto Ortopedic Rizzoli-Section of Osteosacorma/Neoadjuvant chemotherapy-5) and the remaining 92 patients received the therapeutic treatment optimized by our department...

Data were collected in an index day, in the middle of the week, in hospitals with a surgical and ortopedical ward on the following variables: number of nurses, number of nurses aids, average time of nursing care per patient over the 24 hours...

Variation of vertebral morphology in Scheuermann's Kyphosis before and after orthopedic treatment is usually measured by the entity of the curve, using Cobb's method, and by vertebral wedging. But the lack of correlation between these parameters and the clinical evolution of the deformity, lead to the possibility of other alterations that can explain part of the kyphosis deformities before and after the treatment. In this group of alterations the inclination of anterior and posterior walls, that express the trapezoid deformity of vertebras, seem to be more reliable indicators of curve response to ortopedic treatment...

UNLABELLED: Recently, evidence-based guidelines for the prevention and therapy of venous thromboembolism have been published. Prophylaxis: in General Surgery patients with moderate to severe risk need to be treated with unfractioned (UFH) or low molecular weight (LMWH) heparin. Non pharmacological methods must be reserved to patients with high hemorrhagic risk and in association to heparin to patients with particularly high thromboembolic risk. In high risk Ortopedic Surgery prophylaxis with high doses LMWH or oral anticoagulants (OA) is indicated...

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH or Eosinophilic granuloma) were assessed from the orthopaedic point of view to give recommendations for the management of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The results of 36 cases of histologically proven bony manifestations out of 48 treated cases were reviewed. A retrospective analysis of our treated cases with bony manifestations of LCH between 1970 and 1995 was performed. RESULTS: Twenty-two cases exhibited isolated bony manifestations, 18 were monoostotic and 4 were polyostotic...

DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Surgical Intensive Care Units in two university hospitals. PATIENTS: 56 successive trauma patients needing prolonged postinjury mechanical ventilation, including 4 with clinical definite fat embolism syndrome, 5 in whom the diagnosis had been clinically suspected but was impossible to confirm or exclude before bronchoscopy, and 47 with no clinical evidence of the syndrome...
