This study retrospectively assessed radiographic outcomes and risk factors associated with non-union in femoral shaft fragmentary segmental fractures (AO/OTA 32C3) treated with reamed antegrade intra-medullary nailing. Radiological outcomes, including union and alignment, were evaluated. The risk factors for non-union were investigated, including demographics and treatment-related characteristics, such as the number of interlocking screws, segmentation length, main third fragment length, distance of the main third fragment, width ratio and exposed nail length in one cortex from immediate post-operative radiographs...

Force-controlled release of small molecules offers great promise for the delivery of drugs and the release of healing or reporting agents in a medical or materials context1-3 . In polymer mechanochemistry, polymers are used as actuators to stretch mechanosensitive molecules (mechanophores)4 . This technique has enabled the release of molecular cargo by rearrangement, as a direct5,6 or indirect7-10 consequence of bond scission in a mechanophore, or by dissociation of cage11 , supramolecular12 or metal complexes13,14 , and even by 'flex activation'15,16 ...

OBJECTIVE: This mixed-methods study explored whether physician associates/assistants (PAs) who are Black women (for brevity, called Black women PAs throughout this article) experience gendered racial microaggressions and whether these experiences correlated with psychologic distress. The phrase Black women encompasses those who identify with the sociocultural roles, behaviors, and expressions of being a Black woman. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of Black women PAs using the Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale during a 2-month period in 2019...

Inertia friction welding (IFW) was used to join large-diameter hollow bars made of Inconel 690 and 316LN successfully. The interfacial characteristics, microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of welded joints under different process parameters were investigated. The results indicated that a joining mechanism with mechanical interlocking and metallurgical bonding was found in IFW joints. There was a significant mechanical mixing zone at the welding interface. The elemental diffusion layer was found in the "wrinkles" of the mechanical mixing zone...

In this study, five three-dimensional angle-interlock fabrics with different warp and weft densities were fabricated using 1000D Kevlar filaments. The Kevlar/EP composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted molding techniques. The low-velocity impact property of the composite was tested, focusing on the effects of the warp and weft densities, impact energy, impactor shape, and impactor diameter. The damage area, dent depth, and crack lengths in the warp and weft direction were used to evaluate the impact performance, and the specimens were compared with plain-weave composites with similar areal densities...

This paper presents the possibility of forming a pressed joint between two 1.5 mm thick sheets made of HX340 steel. The joint was formed using an additional deformable steel rivet with a hardness of 400HV1. Different distances of rivet pressing below the initial surface of the upper sheet were chosen: 0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.45 and 0.60 (in mm). For the mentioned rivet-pressing distances, forming tests were performed using an "SKB" die with three die depths: 1.45, 1.60 and 1.75 (in mm). Observations and measurements of the characteristic geometric dimensions of the interlock were made...

The discovery of various primary ferroic phases in atomically-thin van der Waals crystals have created a new two-dimensional wonderland for exploring and manipulating exotic quantum phases. It may also bring technical breakthroughs in device applications, as evident by prototypical functionalities of giant tunneling magnetoresistance, gate-tunable ferromagnetism and non-volatile ferroelectric memory etc. However, two-dimensional multiferroics with effective magnetoelectric coupling, which ultimately decides the future of multiferroic-based information technology, has not been realized yet...

At the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST), a multi-ion therapy using helium, carbon, oxygen, and neon ions has been studied for charged particle therapy with more optimal biological effects. To make multi-ion therapy clinically feasible, a new treatment system was developed to realize the changes of the ion species in each irradiation using the Heavy Ion Medial Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Since radiation therapy is safety-critical, it is necessary to construct a safety system that includes multiple safety barriers in the new treatment system for multi-ion therapy and to perform a safety analysis for the prevention of serious accidents...

Introducing natural Bouligand structure into synthetics is expected to develop high-performance structural materials. Interfibrous interface is critical to load transfer, and mechanical functionality of bioinspired Bouligand structure yet receives little attention. Here, we propose one kind of hierarchical and reconfigurable interfibrous interface based on moderate orderliness to mechanically reinforce bioinspired Bouligand structure. The interface imparted by moderate alignment of adaptable networked nanofibers hierarchically includes nanofiber interlocking and hydrogen-bonding (HB) network bridging, being expected to facilitate load transfer and structural stability through dynamic adjustment in terms of nanofiber sliding and HB breaking-reforming...

Cleistogamy is a type of self-pollination that relies on the formation of a stigma-enclosing floral structure. We identify three homeodomain-leucine zipper IV (HD-Zip IV) genes that coordinately promote the formation of interlocking trichomes at the anther margin to unite neighboring anthers, generating a closed anther cone and cleistogamy (flower morphology necessitating strict self-pollination). These HD-Zip IV genes also control style length by regulating the transition from cell division to endoreduplication...

The concept of polyrotaxane comes from the rotaxane structure in the supramolecular field. It is a mechanically interlocked supramolecular assembly composed of linear polymer chains and cyclic molecules. Over recent decades, the synthesis and application of polyrotaxanes have seen remarkable growth. Particularly, cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes have been extensively reported due to the low-price raw materials, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. Hence, it is also one of the most promising mechanically interlocking supramolecules for wide industrialization in the future...

The host-guest interactions are driven by enthalpy change as the entropic factors are unfavorable. Positive correlations between ΔH and ΔS have been observed in the host-guest complexes...
