Betula utilis, also known as Himalayan silver birch has been used as a traditional medicine for many health ailments like inflammatation, HIV, renal and bladder disorders as well as many cancers from ages. Here, we performed bio-guided fractionation of Betula utilis Bark (BUB), in which it was extracted in methanol and fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform, n-butanol and water. All six fractions were evaluated for their in-vitro anticancer activity in nine different cancer cell lines and ethyl acetate fraction was found to be one of the most potent fractions in terms of inducing cytotoxic activity against various cancer cell lines...

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammat ory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the drug types frequently prescribed for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic actions, but carry a risk of major gastroduodenal damage from mild erosive changes to serious ulceration leading to fatal outcomes. From the long history of willow tree bark and its extracts being applied for the relief of pain and fever, the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid, the development of selective cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitors (coxibs), and the identification of a G-protein-coupled receptor for prostaglandin, the popular combination regimen of an NSAID and a proton pump inhibitor was invented, but development was continued for further improvement...

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Xinnao Shutong capsule (XNST) on energy metabolism dysfunction, free radical injury and inflammatic factors in the course of acute cerebral ischemic damage, and try to reveal the mechanism of the protection against ischemia. METHOD: 60 male Wistar rats weighing 280 - 320 g were randomly divided into five groups: normal, sham operation, model, XNST treatment( XNST-T) , and Western medicine treatment (WM-T) group. Acute multi-infarct model in rats was induced by injecting the embolus of blood powder through the right external carotid artery (ECA) into the internal carotid artery (ICA)...

OBJECTIVES: Acromegalics have an increased risk of colorectal neoplasm. The aim of this study was to establish the association between acromegaly and colorectal lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 51 patients with active acromegaly: 30 women and 21 men (average age 52.95 +/- 13.49 years). Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), prolactin (PRL), thyreothropin (TSH), thyroxine (FT4) were measured in the serum when patients were hospitalized for their first diagnosis of acromegaly, before starting the treatment...

US is a powerful tool for characterization of superficial lymph nodes. Unlike other imaging techniques like CT and MRI, which mainly depend on size for differential diagnosis, US can evaluate important parameters such as shape, margins, internal structure and abnormal vascularization. It has the advantage of showing early subtle findings of neoplastic involvement like asymmetric thickening and focal lobulations in the cortex, as well as late findings such as diffuse cortical thickening and absence of hilum...

The results gained with the treatment of benzylalcohol and amyl-m-cresol tablets in oral inflammatic diseases (153 cases) and in the prophylaxis of possible infections (119 cases) accompanied with surgical interventions has been summarised. It was concluded that, the average healing process shortened by 30% in time, and the quality parameters (pain, function etc.) showed 30% better results in 78.4% of the cases treated with Strepsils. 88.3/ of patients preferred to get the tablets, the tolerability was excellent...

To confirm the usefulness of Dai-kenchu-to for intestinal obstruction, investigation of the effects of Dai-kenchu-to on postoperative intestinal adhesion was conducted. Repeated administrations of Dai-kenchu-to (100 or 300 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal obstruction. Motor disturbance and inflammation are thought to be involved in the etiology of intestinal adhesion. A single treatment of Dai-kenchu-to (300 mg/kg) significantly reduce intestinal transit time in postoperative ileus and chemically induced ileus...

The authors summarised the literature data of benzylalcohol and amyl-m-cresol. In the clinical practice they used Strepsils in the treatment of 22 patients suffered from oral inflammatic diseases and in the 20 prophylactic cases of oral surgical interventions. The preliminary clinical report shows that, the Strepsils seems to be very effective in the treatment of oral inflammations and in the prophylaxis too.

Basic red cell ferritin (RCF) content reflects the rate of iron uptake by marrow erythroid cells in patients with anaemia due to chronic inflammation which are sometimes also associated with metabolic disorders of the erythrocytes. For 29 patients with active inflammatic states of chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and microcytic (mean corpuscular volume up to 80fl) or normocytic (MCV 80-95fl) anaemia respectively, the mean RCF content, irrespective of plasma ferritin levels, was determined using a recently established ELISA test...

Serum-soluble Tac peptide was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 12 patients with acute type B hepatitis, 33 patients with chronic type B hepatitis, and 15 age- and sex-matched controls. All 12 patients with acute type B hepatitis had elevated levels of soluble Tac peptide with a mean (+/- SD) of 1527 +/- 432 U/ml, significantly higher than that of normal controls (264 +/- 74 U/ml) or patients with chronic type B hepatitis (646 +/- 399 U/ml). Serial follow-up showed that serum levels of soluble Tac peptide tended to return to normal 2-4 months after onset of acute hepatitis along with the normalization of alanine aminotransferase and seroconversion of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to anti-HBs...

Cortisol-binding protein was prepared and partially purified by (NH4)2SO4 fractionation and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography from 105,000 g supernatant fraction of cytoplasm in rat carrageenin granuloma, which is assumed to be one of the most appropriate experimental models of inflammation. The cortisol-binding protein in the inflammatous tissue, although similar to transcortine, was not transcortine itself. The binding protein was eluted at 0.12 M NaCl by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography with a shallow salt gradient...

Five lethal cases of postovaccinal encephalitis (PVE) were examined in attempts to detect the viral antigen by the fluorescent antibody techniques and to isolate the infectious vaccinia virus. Histologically, the brain tissues were characterized by meningoencephalitis, with perivascular infiltrations and inflammatous reactions mainly in leptomininx, chroid plexus and ependyma. By direct immunofluorescence staining, vaccinia virus antigen was found in the brain specimens of one case, but not in the other four cases...
