Tattoos are a form of decorative body art in which pigment dyes of different colors are inoculated into the skin. It is estimated that 15-25% of general population has one or more tattoos (1), and the reasons for the popularity of this procedure may include greater social acceptance, aesthetic appeal, or perhaps the option of using laser removal techniques to eliminate unwanted tattoos. Even though modern professional tattoos are usually performed in sterile conditions, complications still occur, and with increasing numbers of people getting tattoos, the incidence of tattoo-associated side-effects presenting to dermatologists, which may be as high as 2%, is likely to increase (2)...

We diagnosed fatal Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae sepsis in 3 stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) during summer 2022, in San Diego, California, USA. The previously undetected disease in this relatively small, regional population of dolphins most likely indicates an environmental or biological change in the coastal ocean or organisms.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is defined as an infection of the skin that is usually characterized by localized but poorly demarcated areas of erythema, swelling, and pain. Erysipelas is a subtype of cellulitis that is characterized by a more superficial infection, often involving the face. Because gram-positive bacteria are the most common infective agent, beta-lactam antibiotics such as cephalosporins are commonly used. However, guidelines and physician preference vary widely as different antibiotic options and routes of administration exist, in addition to the fact that most cases are treated empirically without microbiological lab guidance...

Familial Mediterranean fever is the most common monogenic auto-inflammatory disease in the world. It mainly affects people originating from the Mediterranean region. The mutated gene is MEFV, which codes for pyrin. Transmission is autosomal recessive. Patients present with recurrent attacks of fever since childhood associated with abdominal and/or thoracic pain lasting an average of 2-3days and a biological inflammatory syndrome. Other symptoms include arthralgia or arthritis in large joints such as the knees and ankles, myalgia in the lower limbs and pseudo-erysipelas in the ankles...

Since ancient times, the shells of marine molluscs have been used as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic resource. In Spain, they were part of practical guides for doctors or pharmacists until the 19th century. In general, seashells were prepared by dissolving in vinegar and were part of plasters or powders used as toothpaste, or to treat dyspepsia, heartburn and leprosy. Thus, the nacre or mother-of-pearl of various molluscs was regularly used in the Royal Colleges of Surgery and in hospitals during the times of the Cortes of Cadiz, as a medicine in galenic preparations based on powders...

The guidelines on calculated parenteral initial treatment of bacterial infections in adults from 2018 were the first German language S2k guidelines for these infections. This article summarizes the experiences with respect to their practicality in the clinical routine and the resulting supplementations and comments. In view of the many different terms for soft tissue infections, the guidelines had to first establish some definitions and diagnostic criteria. Among others, the guidelines introduced the provisional term limited phlegmons (phlegmons are usually termed cellulitis in Angloamerican literature) for the frequent initially superficial soft tissue infections with Staphylococcus aureus, which do not always extend to the fascia, in order to differentiate them from erysipelas caused by Streptoccocus, which in contrast to phlegmons always respond to penicillin...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Swine erysipelas is a disease caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae , a Gram-positive bacillus, which has great economic importance because it leads to the loss of the swine herd. To control this disease, animals are immunized with a cellular vaccine of killed or attenuated E. rhusiopathiae , but even with herd vaccination, cases of swine erysipelas outbreaks have been reported in the United States, China and Japan, leading to the search for other antigenic components of the bacteria that may promote greater protection against E...

Despite the advanced knowledge concerning autoinflammatory diseases (AID), more data regarding the optimal treatment options and outcomes of the children who met the criteria of more than one AID are required. This study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of children from familial Mediterranean fever (FMF)-endemic countries who meet both the FMF and the periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome criteria. Moreover, we aimed to measure the response rates to colchicine and tonsillectomy and evaluate the factors affecting the colchicine response in these patients...

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a relevant zoonotic infectious agent causing swine erysipelas (SE) in wild boar. In Portugal, there is no information on its occurrence. For this reason, this study aims to perform a first serosurvey of SE in hunted wild boars in Portugal. During the 2019/2020 hunting season, 111 sera from hunted wild boar were collected and analysed serologically in the laboratory with a commercial ELISA kit. No animals were eviscerated and examined after the hunt. The hunters took it all for private consumption...

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) bacteria cause a spectrum of human diseases ranging from self-limiting pharyngitis and mild, uncomplicated skin infections (impetigo, erysipelas, and cellulitis) to highly morbid and rapidly invasive, life-threatening infections such as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis (NF). HLA class II allelic polymorphisms are linked with differential outcomes and severity of GAS infections. The dysregulated immune response and peripheral cytokine storm elicited due to invasive GAS infections increase the risk for toxic shock and multiple organ failure in genetically susceptible individuals...

Ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection at slaughter are performed by Official Veterinarians and it is essential to identify alterations/lesions, which can make organs/carcasses unsuitable for human consumption. Obviously, carcass condemnation must be regarded as a highly undesirable event for the entire swine industry chain, as it represents the total failure of a long period of challenging work. Therefore, it seems valuable to estimate the prevalence and causes of carcasses condemnation, in order to preserve consumers' health and pig farming profitability...

Classical attacks of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) are often accompanied by fever, but some of the patients have attacks without fever. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of FMF patients with and without fever during their attacks and draw attention to the different clinical presentations of FMF in children. Medical files of patients aged 0-18 years who were followed up with the diagnosis of FMF in two reference pediatric rheumatology centers were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups: children who had had no fever in any of their attacks were assigned as group 1, and those who had fever during their attacks were classified as group 2...

Cutaneous leishmaniasis can present in many different clinical forms. Diagnosis of atypical forms is often delayed. It is useful to keep in mind the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a mimicking disease, to reduce unnecessary treatment and patient morbidity. Erysipeloid leishmaniasis should be considered when presented as long-term erysipelas-like lesions that do not respond to antibiotics. We want to present our five patients with erysipeloid leishmaniasis, one of the atypical clinical forms.
