Objective: To assess short-term outcomes after lung transplantation with organs procured following brain death. Methods: Between April 2015 and July 2016, all 17 recipients after lung transplantation using organs from brain death donors (DBD) at Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine were enrolled in this study. We performed a 1-year cluster-randomized field trial to assess the effect of standardized management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on lung function and quality of life (QOL) measures in patients in China. We used the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) treatment guidelines and assessed indexes including pulmonary function, QOL, quality-adjusted life years (QALY), Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnea scale, 6-min walk distance (6-MWD), number of emergency visits, and frequency of hospitalization...

AIM: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) was reported to be useful for diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) lymphadenitis, although its indication remains unclear for suspicious pulmonary TB patients. To clarify the role of EBUS-TBNA for the diagnosis of immunocompetent TB patients with intrathoracic lymphadenopathy, we compared two diagnostic modalities: traditional bronchoscopy alone and EBUS-TBNA combined with bronchoscopy. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 175 patients of suspicious pulmonary TB with intrathoracic lymphadenopathy in a single institute (Tongji University, Shanghai, China) from January 2010 to May 2011...

BACKGROUND: Aim of the study was to assess the results of surgery for secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) in the elderly with COPD at Shanghai Pulmonary Disease Hospital. METHODS: From 1 January 1993 to 30 June 2007, the operation for SSP was performed in 107 elderly patients (> or = 60y) with COPD. All patient data was reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Morbidity was 25.2 % and mortality was 4.7 %. The total effective rate of intrapleural injection of human fibrinogen for the treatment of postoperative persistent air leaks was 86...
