Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. However, few studies have investigated brain changes associated with chronic inflammation. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation might be related to brain structural alterations in patients with AD. Objectives: To investigate the association between disease severity (Eczema Area and Severity Index [EASI]), proinflammatory cytokines, and differences in brain gray matter (GM) volume in patients with AD...

Although psychedelic and hallucinogenic substances have gained popularity for therapeutic use, their dermatologic adverse effects are poorly characterized. This review characterizes the cutaneous reactions associated with psychedelic and hallucinogenic drugs. A review of PubMed and Scopus was conducted from the inception of databases to August 31, 2023. Search terms included drug names and classes (cannabis, MDMA, ecstasy, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, psychedelics, hallucinogens, peyote, marijuana, lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, ketamine, dimethyltryptamine, DMT, phencyclidine, PCP, dextromethorphan, psilocybin, and ayahuasca), and dermatosis terms (dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug eruption, skin reaction, and urticaria)...

BACKGROUND: novel oncologic therapies, including epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFR-Is) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), are associated with a new spectrum of adverse reactions, with prominent cutaneous toxicities. The impact of cutaneous adverse events (cAEs) on patients' quality of life (QoL) represents an unmet clinical need. OBJECTIVES: 1) to assess whether cutaneous toxicities directed therapies are effective in reducing the QoL burden via the submission of two patient reported outcome measures (PROMs); 2) to investigate whether class of oncologic therapy, type of cAE and toxicity severity differently impact on patients' QoL...

INTRODUCTION: Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are serious conditions that carry a high rate of morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: This review highlights the pearls and pitfalls of SJS/TEN, including presentation, diagnosis, and management in the emergency department (ED) based on current evidence. DISCUSSION: SJS/TEN is a rare, delayed hypersensitivity reaction resulting in de-epithelialization of the skin and mucous membranes...

Specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) polymorphisms combined with certain drug administration strongly correlate with skin eruption. Abacavir hypersensitivity (AHS), which is strongly associated with HLA-B*57:01, is one of the most representative examples. Conventionally, HLA transmits immunological signals via interactions with T cell receptors on the cell surface. This study focused on HLA-mediated intracellular reactions in keratinocytes that might determine the onset of skin immunotoxicity by drug treatments...

In the wake of a global COVID-19 pandemic, where innovations in vaccination technology and the speed of development and distribution have been unprecedented, a wide variety of post-vaccination cutaneous reactions have surfaced. However, there has not been a systematic review that investigates pityriasis eruptions and the associated variants following COVID-19 inoculations. A PubMed search using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was performed to find case reports from the earliest record through November 2022...

Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is a rare condition in which crystals accumulate in the cytoplasm of histiocytes and is usually associated with a lymphoplasmacytic neoplasm. Cutaneous CSH is extraordinarily rare and limited to case reports in the literature. We report two cases of this disease with cutaneous involvement. Case 1 was a 65-year-old male with a 4-month history of a pruritic eruption that started as a solitary pink to skin-colored indurated plaque on the anterior neck before progressing to involve the whole neck, chest wall, and face...

INTRODUCTION: Drug-induced lichen planus is a cutaneous adverse effect that manifests as a systemic eruption of flat-topped, erythematous, or violaceous papules resembling lichen planus on the trunk and extremities. Although antitubercular therapy has been linked to cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, the literature on such cases is scarce. Here, we present a case to contribute to this field, reporting on its presentation and management, and reviewing previous case studies. CASE REPORT: Our patient, a 63-year-old male, presented with black pigmented patches on the skin, having been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and on antitubercular therapy for the past two months...

INTRODUCTION: There are limited data regarding the characteristics and management of drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHR) in hospitalized children. This study aims to determine the prevalence, clinical features, and management of DHRs in pediatric inpatients. METHODS: Children who had pediatric allergy consultation for suspected DHR during hospitalization in Ankara Bilkent City Hospital between August 1, 2020, and July 30, 2021, were included. Patient and reaction characteristics, culprit drugs, and management strategies were recorded...

The worldwide monkeypox (mpox) outbreak in 2022 showed a high frequency of sexually transmitted infections (STI). A cross-sectional study was carried out using secondary data from the Brazilian official mpox surveillance systems. A total of 10,169 mpox cases were identified, with a median age of 32 years. Among them, 92.3% were male at birth and 57.5% were men who have sex with other men (MSM). Approximately 11% were diagnosed with STI, including 5.8% with syphilis and 2.5% with genital herpes. Individuals aged from 25 to 34 years, MSM, individuals with HIV-positive status, and those manifesting skin eruptions or penile edema were associated with STI...

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, acute skin eruption characterized by the development of numerous nonfollicular sterile pustules. Most cases are caused by drug reactions, among which Diltiazem has been incriminated. Herein, we present an 83-year-old female who presented for evaluation of generalized skin rash 3 days after initiation of Diltiazem. She was eventually diagnosed with AGEP, Diltiazem was discontinued, and systemic steroids were administered with the resolution of symptoms...

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is an uncommon eruption characterized by sterile pustules on an erythematous background, which is usually associated with drugs. AGEP is described as a self-limiting disease with favorable prognosis. We reported a case of Kawasaki Disease (KD) following AGEP. A 3-year-old male, who was admitted with pustules and five days of fever at our hospital, was diagnosed with AGEP. Despite the skin lesions and fever improving drastically after prednisolone therapy, the fever recurred on hospitalization day 5...

Dupilumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha chain that inhibits IL-4 and IL-13 signalling. It is one of the systemic treatments for patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), which provides favourable safety and efficacy. We report a case of psoriasis-like eruption induced by dupilumab as an adverse effect in a patient with AD, immediately remitted after switching to baricitinib, which inhibits JAK1/2. Moreover, the atopic skin lesion also simultaneously went into remission upon baricitinib treatment...
