This case report describes our treatment of a persistent periantral abscess in a 35-year-old woman. The abscess developed following a zygoma-reduction surgery, during which a preexisting fungal ball had not been addressed. Our comprehensive treatment approach included functional endoscopic sinus surgery, fungal ball removal, abscess drainage, and debridement. Two weeks postoperatively, the patient's symptoms had resolved. A 6-month postoperative follow-up revealed no signs of recurrence or complications, and the patient reported satisfactory functional and aesthetic results...

Hemifacial Microsomia (HFM) is the second most common congenital craniofacial malformation syndrome, and the complexity of HFM makes its treatment challenging. The present study aimed to introduce a new approach of utilization of virtual surgical planning (VSP) and 3D-printed surgical adjuncts for maxillofacial reconstruction. Five HFM patients were included in this study. All participants were provided with a full VSP, including the design of osteotomy lines, the design and fabrication of 3D-printed cutting guides, fixation plates, and titanium mesh for implantation...

BACKGROUND: Management of facial fractures is variable. Understanding how time to operative management impacts outcomes can help standardize practice. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) database between 2016 and 2019. Adult patients with operative facial fractures were isolated by ICD-10 procedure codes, and further stratified by fracture location, including the mandible, orbit, maxilla, zygoma, and frontal bone...

METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all consecutive patients with severely atrophic edentulous maxilla and insufficient bone height and width in the anterior and posterior regions bilaterally, who underwent rehabilitation with the QZP between May 2006 and December 2021...

Total joint reconstruction (TJR) has become the most preferred method of reconstruction in recent years for hemifacial microsomia (HFM). This requires meticulous planning for the glenoid fossa and ramus prosthesis along with the arch in certain indications. TJR in a type V HFM is extremely challenging due to agenesis/hypolasia of the zygoma and arch which compromises anchorage of the glenoid prosthesis. Conventional options used for such indications incorporate extended designs for the fossa. However, the two designs used commonly are associated with limitations; (i) the temporal extension is overtly large and cannot be anchored in patients with thin temporal bone and (ii) the glenoid fossa incorporated into the arch prosthesis, where the fossa is not positioned on stable bone and occlusal loading is non-physiological; transmitted onto the arch prosthesis rather than the skull base...

Background and objective Facial fractures represent a growing concern among an aging population prone to falls. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate differential facial fracture patterns and outcomes based on age effects. Determining the differences between the severity and type of facial fractures in populations of different ages will help guide clinical decision-making when managing patients with facial fractures. Methods This was a single-center study involving trauma registry data, from July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022...

Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of radiotherapy in patients with acute and chronic changes affecting the skin. While acute changes occur within 90 days of radiation exposure, chronic changes manifest thereafter. This paper presents a case of a 70-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) on the right zygoma who was treated with superficial radiation therapy (SRT), which resulted in a hypo-pigmented atrophic scar. The scar was successfully treated with a single session of Erbium:YAG laser therapy...

Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery always relies on accurate preoperative planning to assist surgeons, and automatically generating bone structures and digitizing landmarks for CMF preoperative planning is crucial. Since the soft and hard tissues of the CMF regions possess complicated attachment, segmenting the CMF bones and detecting the CMF landmarks are challenging problems. In this study, we proposed a semantic segmentation network to segment the maxilla, mandible, zygoma, zygomatic arch, and frontal bones...

BACKGROUND: Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by response assessment is the standard treatment algorithm for locally advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (OCSCC) in the Indian subcontinent. The 3-drug NACT regimen (Docetaxel-Cisplatin-5-FU) has shown improvement in overall survival over 2-drug regimen (Docetaxel-Cisplatin) in a phase-3 randomised study. We have analysed the 10-year outcomes with this treatment algorithm. For many decades the success of dental implants has been considered to be dependent predominantly on the quality and quantity of the patient's alveolar bone. Grafting procedures have been commonly used to rehabilitate severely atrophic jaws but these procedures have disadvantages such as long treatment duration, major surgery, the risk of morbidity in the donor area, and high treatment costs. Recently, the use of 4 zygomatic implants has become an important treatment option in the rehabilitation of extremely atrophic maxilla...

Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon and account to less than 1% of all osseous tumors. Vertebral body and skull are the most common sites involved. However involvement of facial bones is rare with zygoma being even rarer site. Due to its rarity it creates diagnostic dilemma clinically and radiologically. Its vascular nature carries the risk of intraoperative bleeding hence an accurate preoperative diagnosis with arterial embolization helps to avoid the dire consequences. Fine needle aspiration cytology along with radiological correlation is extremely helpful in such cases...

Malar reduction surgery can increase its susceptibility to fractures in case of trauma. Patients who had malar reduction surgery and sustained a zygoma fracture pose unique challenges for treatment and management. This is a case of a 28-year-old female patient who presented with a unilateral zygoma fracture following bilateral malar reduction and augmentation rhinoplasty 6 years ago. Physical examination revealed a clicking sound when opening the mouth at the right zygomatic buttress and a depressed preauricular area, suggesting arch fracture...

Parotid lymphangioma is a benign lymphatic malformation commonly observed in infancy or early childhood. It often grows insidiously and presents as a painless, soft fluctuant mass. We report a case of an eight-year-old boy who was diagnosed from another center with right parotid lymphangioma of one-year duration. He presented with right painful preauricular swelling and trismus for nine days after a recent history of blunt trauma to the preauricular caused an acute expansion of the swelling and subsequently, the patient developed ipsilateral facial nerve palsy...

BACKGROUND: Malar/zygoma reduction is an effective procedure to change a broader, flatter facial appearance to an oval facial shape. Of the intraoral and coronal approaches, the intraoral is the more commonly used technique than the coronal, due to the perception that complications with the coronal approach are significant, and intraoral results are satisfactory. We compared the postoperative effects of both approaches. METHODS: From 1994 to 1999, we included the 150 intraoral cases that were followed up for 3 years postoperatively...

The functional restoration of Brown class III maxillary defects is a challenging endeavour in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Conventional reconstruction techniques with osseous free flaps have certain limitations, such as the need for multiple operations and greater patient morbidity. This study introduces a single-stage computer-assisted approach for tumour resection and functional restoration of these defects using titanium mesh, zygomatic implants, and a vascularized anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF). Virtual surgical planning was used to simulate tumour resection, titanium mesh placement, and zygomatic implant insertion...
