BACKGROUND: Right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVD) often coexists with various cardiopulmonary diseases. However, the association between RVD and risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) has not been well studied. This study examined the risk of SCD associated with RVD in patients with heterogeneous underlying cardiac diseases. METHODS: The Mayo Clinic cardiac care unit database included 5463 consecutive patients with complete echocardiographic evaluation to assess right ventricular systolic function and RVD severity...

Implantable cardiac pacemakers have seen remarkable progress in the last sixty years and remained as cornerstone therapy for symptomatic bradycardia. Despite this progress the current day traditional transvenous implanted pacemaker systems are limited by the need for a surgically created pocket for the generator, indwelling leads in the vascular system and lastly passage through the tricuspid valve. A majority of the implant and explant related complications are due to the surgical pocket and indwelling leads...

Introduction: Saprochaete capitata (Teleomorph: Magnusiomyces capitatus ) is a ubiquitous yeast found in environmental sources such as soil, water, air, plants and dairy products. It is also a part of the normal microbial flora in humans. The yeast is being increasingly reported as an opportunistic pathogen, especially in patients in the haemato-oncology setting, the infection being often mistakenly diagnosed as invasive candidiasis. Aim: To review the epidemiological, clinical and microbiological features of six patients admitted in our hospital over a period of 10 years (from January 2007 to December 2016), from whom Saprochaete capitata was isolated...

PURPOSE: During cardiac mapping, it is critical to discriminate signals related to cardiac conduction versus those due to mechanical interaction with other cardiac structures such as valves. We sought to define characteristics that could facilitate discrimination of valve artifact from cardiac conduction signals. METHODS: Patients with structurally normal heart undergoing mapping for ventricular arrhythmias arising from the vicinity of the aortic valve between January 2013 and May 2015 were included...

BACKGROUND: Scar burden by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is associated with functional recovery after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). There is limited data on long-term mortality after CABG based on left ventricular (LV) scar burden. METHODS: Patients who underwent LGE CMR between January 2003 and February 2010 within 1 month prior to CABG were included. A standard 16 segment model was used for scar quantification...
