The ultimate objective of PhIMED, in which two European (Germany, Italy) and two Mediterranean (Morocco, Egypt) countries collaborate, is to improve the cultivation of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) under arid and semi-arid conditions by analysing and enhancing stress tolerance of the nitrogen fixing rhizobial microsymbionts. Rhizobial strains nodulating P. vulgaris (RP strains) isolated from areas in Morocco frequently subjected to drought were analysed for their salt and pH tolerance and their phylogenetic relationship...

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid intermediate involved in two metabolic pathways, in the remethylation to methionine and in the transsulfuration to cysteine. Severe hyperhomocysteinemia (> 100 mumol/l) is found in congenital homocystinuria. Moderate (15-30 mumol/l) or intermediate (> 30-100 mumol/l) hyperhomocysteinemia is caused by defects in genes encoding for enzymes of homocysteine metabolism or by inadequate intake of those vitamins that are involved in homocysteine metabolism (folic acid, cobalmin, and vitamin B6)...

A radioimmunoassay of R-type binders of cobalmin was devised and tested. The assay incorporated an antibody against purified human salivary R binder as the binding reagent. The labeled ligand was cyano[57Co]cobalamin bound to the R binder of pooled human saliva. The standard source of unlabeled ligand was also from human saliva of known R binder content. The assay was responsive to R binders of several sources, to either pure R or that of crude sources and equally to R binder saturated or unsaturated with cobalamin...
