BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for the development of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). However, the molecular mechanisms by which obesity promotes PTC is unclear. This study aims to identify adipokines that are linked to PTC progression. METHODS: An adipokine antibody array was used to determine the serum levels of 40 adipokines in normal-weight and obese PTC patients. ELISA was used to determine the serum levels of adiponectin. Recombinant human adiponectin was produced by human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and used to treat PTC cells...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S): To establish the distribution pattern of cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) and propose optimized clinical target volume (CTV) boundaries specific to oral/ oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OSCC/OPSCC). MATERIALS/METHODS: 531 patients with pathologically confirmed OSCC/OPSCC were enrolled from January 2013 to June 2022. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the minimal distance from the lesion's edge to the body's midline: ≤1 cm or > 1 cm...

OBJECTIVE: Active surveillance (AS) is generally accepted as an alternative to immediate surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) measuring ≤1.0 cm (cT1a) without risk factors. This study investigated the clinicopathologic characteristics of PTCs measuring ≤2.0 cm without cervical lymph node metastasis (cT1N0) by tumor size group to assess the feasibility of AS for PTCs between 1.0 cm and 1.5 cm (cT1b≤1.5). DESIGN: This study enrolled clinically T1N0 patients with preoperative ultrasonography information (N=935) from a cohort of 1259 patients who underwent lobectomy and were finally diagnosed with PTC from June 2020 to March 2022...

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of lateral cervical lymph node metastasis (LLNM) involvement is important for treating papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Thyroglobulin is associated with LLNM, but there may be differences in the diagnostic value of serum thyroglobulin (sTg) and fine needle aspiration washout fluid thyroglobulin (FNA-Tg). Herein, we investigated the optimal cutoff value (OCV) of sTg and FNA-Tg and their diagnostic performance. METHODS: We enrolled 116 PTC patients who underwent radical resection of thyroid carcinoma with lateral cervical lymph node dissection at the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University from June 2018 to July 2022...

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is generally recognized as a slow-growing tumor. However, a small subset of patients may still experience relapse or metastasis shortly after therapy, leading to a poor prognosis and raising concerns about excessive medical treatment. One major challenge lies in the inadequacy of effective biomarkers for accurate risk stratification. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which are closely related to malignant characteristics and poor prognosis, play a significant role in the genesis and development of PTC through various pathways...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlations between multigene alterations and clinicopathological features in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) samples. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 111 cytological specimens of thyroid nodules, including 74 PTC samples and 37 benign samples, were analyzed using a 22-gene mutation assay employing next-generation sequencing. Clinicopathological information was retrospectively collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Gene alterations were associated with a higher rate of lymph node metastasis (LNM) and thyroid capsular invasion, a lower rate of coexisting Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the classical PTC subtype, and younger age (<45 years)...

We present the case of a 56-year-old male patient diagnosed with Hürthle cell carcinoma (HCC) that developed widespread metastasis in bone, lung, and lymph nodes with a larger tumor located in the right tibia. The patient was only disturbed by the pain, discomfort, and disability linked to the tibial metastasis. After careful consideration, the best course of action was considered to be the surgical excision of the proximal right tibia with arthroplasty using the C LINK Megaprosthesis tumor revision system...

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. Skip metastases of PTCs are easily misdiagnosed before surgery, and it could lead to re-operation and affect the prognosis. Although there are a few studies about nomograms for predicting central lymph node metastases (CLNM) or lateral lymph node metastases (LLNM) of PTCs, there are few studies about nomograms for skip metastases. Based on the clinical and ultrasonographic characteristics of patients with PTCs, the aim of our study was to investigate the risk factors and establish a nomogram for predicting the risk of skip metastases in PTCs...

The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is increasing and PTC ≤ 10 mm (PTMC) accounts for most new diagnoses. PTMCs are not always low risk, as detection of lymph nodes metastasis (LNM) may occur. The purpose of the study was to analyze the clinical pattern, frequency, and independent risk factors of patients with PTMC and LNM. From January 2022 to June 2023, PTCs managed at CTO Hospital, Rome; Policlinico Vanvitelli, Naples; and Garibaldi Nesima Hospital, Catania were included...

Minimal extrathyroid extension (mETE) effect on papillary thyroid carcinoma (PC) prognosis is still debated even more so now that this factor has been removed in the 8th AJCC Edition, supporting the hypothesis that mETE is not associated with aggressive tumors. The accurate and timely assessment of lymph node involvement is paramount in the management of patients with malignant tumors, owing to its direct correlation with cancer staging, therapeutic strategy formulation, and prognostication. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), as a burgeoning imaging modality, has shown promising results in the diagnosis and prediction of preoperative metastatic lymph nodes in recent years. This article aims to explore the application of DECT in identifying metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) across various cancer types, including but not limited to thyroid carcinoma (focusing on papillary thyroid carcinoma), lung cancer, and colorectal cancer...

Intrathyroidal thymic carcinoma (ITC) is a very rare malignant epithelial tumor of the thyroid gland with thymic epithelial differentiation. Here, we are reporting the case of an eighty-year-old man who at presentation had extrathyroidal spread to the larynx and metastasis to regional lymph nodes. Though the tumor had a relatively low-grade morphology, there were areas of high mitotic activity with areas of necrosis. The classically described ivory-white gross appearance of the tumor, histomorphology of thick bands dividing the tumor into lobules, squamous cell differentiation, tight whorls of cells resembling Hassall's corpuscle, and areas showing dense lymphocytic infiltration, together with an immunoprofile of CD5, Ckit, Tumor protein 63 (p63), and B-cell lymphoma 2 gene (bcl2) positivity, helped in diagnosing this rare entity...
