Thyroid cancer (TC) is a common malignancy of the endocrine system. Abnormal expression of tripartite motif-containing 29 (TRIM29) has been reported to promote tumorigenesis and predict poor prognosis in several human malignancies. The aim of this study was to assess the involvement of TRIM29 in the significance and prognosis of TC. Fifty-six tumor samples and their clinicopathological para-meters were obtained from TC patients; the expression level of TRIM29 was detected by RT-qPCR and western blotting. TRIM29 expression was knocked down by small interfering RNA (siRNA) among TT, TPC-1, and K1 cells to investigate the biological role of TRIM29 in TC cells...

PURPOSE: The measurement of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) of papillary thyroid carcinoma patients, 12 months after total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation following thyroxine hormone withdrawal (T4-off Tg) or recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone stimulation (rhTSH-Tg), is standard method for monitoring disease status. The aim of this study was to find predictive factors for detectable T4-off Tg during follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 329 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and RAI ablation between October 2008 and August 2012...

BACKGROUND: Cervical lymph node metastasis is a vital factor associated with local recurrence in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Tumor size is used in the staging of PTC because it represents the tumor load. This study compared two methods of tumor size assessment to predict tumor behavior in the relationship between size and cervical node involvement for patients with PTC. METHODS: The study enrolled 1084 patients who underwent initial thyroid surgery and had a pathologic diagnosis of PTC between 2012 and 2014 at The Second Affiliated Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine...

CONTEXT: Medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs) complicated by ectopic Cushing's syndrome have a poor prognosis, partially due to the difficulties to control hypercortisolism by adrenal blocking drugs. Recent reports (including the initial follow-up of this patient) have suggested that tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) may be a therapeutic option due to an antisecretory action on ACTH. However, there is a lack of long-term follow-up studies. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 58 year-old man with a MTC-related Cushing's syndrome resistant to a combination of several anticortisolic drugs...

Hobnail variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (HPTC) represents a recently described, aggressive and rare group of thyroid tumors with poorly understood pathogenesis. Molecular data about this group of cancers are few and a more detailed molecular characterization of these tumors is needed. The main objective of the study is to define a comprehensive molecular typing of HPTC. Eighteen patients affected by HPTC, including eighteen primary tumors and four lymph node metastases, were screened for NRAS, KRAS, HRAS, BRAF, TP53, PIK3CA, hTERT, PTEN, CDKN2A, EGFR, AKT1, CTNNB1, and NOTCH1 gene mutations...

Ga-PSMA PET/CT is increasingly used to assess prostate cancer. Avid Ga-PSMA uptake by thyroid cancer and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been reported in few cases. A 75-year-old man who received a diagnosis of RCC in 2006 and prostate cancer in 2009 presented with elevated prostate-specific antigen levels (0.7 ng/mL) following prostatectomy. Ga-PSMA PET/CT showed avid Ga-PSMA uptake in 1 pelvic and 1 retroperitoneal lymph node and focal Ga-PSMA accumulation in the thyroid. Excised retroperitoneal lymph node and thyroid tissues showed metastases from RCC, whereas the pelvic lymph node exhibited metastasis from prostate cancer...

BACKGROUND: Thyroid lobectomy alone is increasingly being performed for patients with encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (fvPTC). However, the prevalence of contralateral disease in these patients is unknown. Here, we investigated the presence of synchronous disease in fvPTC to improve decision making regarding the extent of surgical resection and need for surveillance. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent thyroid surgery from October 2009 to February 2013 with a diagnosis of fvPTC as their primary lesion...

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) accounts for 80-90% of all thyroid malignancies. The tall cell variant (TCV) is a rare aggressive histotype of PTC. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic factors of TCV with those of classical papillary thyroid carcinoma (cPTC). A literature search was performed using the PubMed and EMBASE databases using Medical Subject Headings and keywords. Twenty studies that included 1871 patients with TCV and 75323 patients with cPTC were included in our meta-analysis...

The hobnail variant (HV) of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is an unusual entity recently proposed as an aggressive variant of PTC. We describe the pathologic and molecular features of 2 cases of HV of PTC. Both tumors presented in stage III (pT3 pN1a M0). The first case was diagnosed in a 62-year-old man, whereas the second was in a 53-year-old woman. Both patients were treated with total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine. The primary tumors showed a hobnail/micropapillary pattern in ≥50% of the neoplasm, and positivity for TTF-1, TTF-2, thyroglobulin (TG), cyclin D1, and p53...

Diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (DSPTC) is a rare subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma with a high incidence of lymph node metastasis. One of its characteristic histological features is the presence of dense lymphocyte infiltrates; however, how these lymphocytes are recruited in this pathological setting remains unclear. Here, we analysed 17 DSPTC cases immunohistologically for cell adhesion molecules expressed on endothelial cells. We found that venules morphologically similar to high endothelial venules (HEVs) in secondary lymphoid organs were induced in lymphoid aggregates in DSPTC, and such HEV-like vessels expressed 6-sulfo sialyl Lewis X (sLeX) glycans as well as intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1)...

Increasing evidence suggests that microRNA-101 (miR-101) is involved in the progression of various human cancers, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the biological functions of miR-101 and underlying molecular mechanisms in PTC remain largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that miR-101 underexpression in PTC tissue was associated with lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis of PTC patients. MiR-101 reduced PTC cell proliferation, apoptosis resistance, and invasion. Ubiquitin-specific protease 22 (USP22) was confirmed as a direct target of miR-101...
