The purpose of this study was to measure and compare renal pelvic pressure (RPP) between prone and supine percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in a benchtop model. Six identical silicone kidney models were placed into anatomically correct prone or supine torsos constructed from patient CT scans in the corresponding positions. A 30-Fr renal access sheath was placed in either the upper, middle, or lower pole calyx for both prone and supine positions. Two 9-mm BegoStones were placed in the respective calyx and RPPs were measured at baseline, irrigating with a rigid nephroscope, and irrigating with a flexible nephroscope...

We aimed to perform a comprehensive study on the development and characterization of silymarin (Syl)-loaded niosomes as potential drug delivery systems. The results demonstrate significant novelty and promising outcomes in terms of morphology, size distribution, encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release behavior, free energy profiles of Syl across the niosome bilayer, hydrogen bonding interactions, antimicrobial properties, cytotoxicity, and in vivo evaluations. The physical appearance, size, and morphology assessment of free niosomes and Syl-loaded niosomes indicated stable and well-formed vesicular structures suitable for drug delivery...

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease and affects approximately 40% of diabetic individuals. Cases of DKD continue to rise globally as the prevalence of diabetes mellitus increases, with an estimated 415 million people living with diabetes in 2015 and a projected 642 million by 2040. DKD is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, representing 34% and 36% of all chronic kidney disease deaths in men and women, respectively. Common co-morbidities including hypertension and ageing-related nephron loss further complicate disease diagnosis and progression...

BACKGROUND: The impact of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on incident dementia is unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between GDM and all-cause dementia and the mediating effects of chronic diseases on this relationship. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included women from the UK Biobank who were grouped based on GDM history. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to explore the associations between GDM and dementia. We further analysed the mediating effects of chronic diseases on this relationship and the interactions of covariates...

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) provides much more information compared to non-enhanced CT images, especially for the differentiation of malignancies, such as liver carcinomas. Contrast media injection phase information is usually missing on public datasets and not standardized in the clinic even in the same region and language. This is a barrier to effective use of available CECT images in clinical research. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to detect contrast media injection phase from CT images by means of organ segmentation and machine learning algorithms...

Introduction: To evaluate by using 3D renal volumetric assessment and compare renal parenchymal preservation between patient who underwent open partial nephrectomy (OPN) and robot assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RALPN). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of the patients to evaluate the effect of OPN (23 patients) or RALPN (19 patients) partial nephrectomy on renal parenchymal preservation. The CT or MRI were examined using 3D-Slicer image processing software. The tumor volume and preoperative and postoperative non-tumor bearing parenchymal volumes were evaluated with the segmentation...

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is perceived as lethal tissue damage and significantly increases mortality in combination with acute kidney injury (AKI). Both short-acting (epoetin alfa or beta) and long-acting (darbepoetin alfa or PEG-epoetin) erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are commonly prescribed for patients with kidney failure undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. We compared the risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and of all-cause mortality associated with receipt of short- vs. long-acting ESAs. The animals were followed up until 5 months of age, followed by euthanasia. The blood, kidneys, and fat deposits--epididymal, retroperitoneal, and subcutaneous--were extracted and analyzed. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Some clinical trials have indicated the beneficial effects of statins in patients with kidney disease, while others have reported no positive effect of statins in these patients. We conducted this meta-analysis to identify the effects of statins on serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) in patients with kidney disease. BACKGROUND: Medial arterial calcification is a chronic systemic vascular disorder distinct from atherosclerosis and is commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and aging individuals. We previously showed that NR4A3 (nuclear receptor subfamily 4 group A member 3), an orphan nuclear receptor, is a key regulator in apo (apolipoprotein) A-IV-induced atherosclerosis progression; however, its role in vascular calcification is poorly understood. METHODS: We generated NR4A3-/- mice and 2 different types of medial arterial calcification models to investigate the biological roles of NR4A3 in vascular calcification...
