Minimally invasive surgery prevents surgeons from manually palpating organs to locate subsurface tumors and other structures. One solution is to use ultrasound; however, it is not always reliable. Various minimally invasive surgery instruments that provide tactile feedback have been proposed to augment ultrasound sensing for tumor localization; however, current designs have limitations such as cumbersome wiring, difficulty in manipulation, lack of sterilizability and high cost. In this paper, a novel method of embedding shape information into level set image segmentation is proposed. Our method is based on inferring shape variations by a sparse linear combination of instances in the shape repository. Given a sufficient number of training shapes with variations, a new shape can be approximated by a linear span of training shapes associated with those variations. At each step of curve evolution the curve is moved to minimize Chan-Vese energy functional as well as toward the best approximation based on a linear combination of training samples...

A promising alternative for treating absence seizures has emerged through closed-loop neurostimulation, which utilizes a wearable or implantable device to detect and subsequently suppress epileptic seizures. Recovering neural responses from electrode recordings is fundamental for understanding the dynamics of neural networks. This effort is often obscured by stimulus artifacts in the recordings, which result from stimuli injected into the electrode-tissue interface. Stimulus artifacts, which can be orders of magnitude larger than the neural responses of interest, can mask short-latency evoked responses. Furthermore, simultaneous neural stimulation and recording on the same electrode generates artifacts with larger amplitudes compared to a separate electrode setup, which inevitably overwhelm the amplifier operation and cause unrecoverable neural signal loss...

This paper considers the utility of several alternative energy measures to reduce the energy required by a stimulation current source to charge a neuron membrane capacitance to a prescribed value in the case of a single sodium channel. For a simple case, minimizing the energy of the nonlinear channel conductance provides improved efficiency in terms of stimulator energy as compared to minimizing a squared-integral measure of the stimulation current. An eight-class SSVEP-based BCI system was designed and demonstrated in this study. To minimize the complexity of the traditional equipment and operation, only one work electrode was used. The work electrode was fabricated in our laboratory and designed as a claw-like structure with a diameter of 15 mm, featuring 8 small fingers of 4mm length and 2 mm diameter, and the weight was only 0.1g. This paper presents a computationally efficient FIR (finite impulse response) filter for ECG (electrocardiogram) baseline wander removal. The proposed filter is based on frequency-response masking (FRM) technique, which reduces the number of multiplications by 90% compared to the conventional FIR filter. The filter specifications are optimized to obtain the highest SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) while minimizing the number of filter coefficients. However, using extra-thin needles with a diameter less than 25G (0.53 mm diameter) can cause needle deflection.
