The uncooperative behavior of children in the dental office has increased the demand for pharmacological behavior management techniques. Moderate sedation is more effective by providing analgesia and anxiolysis, thereby aiding in carrying out the most comfortable, efficient, and high-quality dental services. There is a need to understand the various aspects such as the choice of drug, method of drug administration, safety, and efficacy. Bibliometrics can reveal significant shifts in research and publication trends...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intravenous sedation with propofol in the dental treatment offers an alternative to inhalation sedation or general anesthesia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and identify risk factors for intraoperative complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Uncooperative children who could not complete dental treatment under non-pharmacological behavior management or mild-to-moderate sedation in the outpatient pediatric department were selected...

BACKGROUND: Severe dental phobia or failure to cooperate with treatment are very common in outpatient pediatric dentistry. Personalized and appropriate non-invasive anesthesia methods can save medical expenses, improve treatment efficiency, reduce the anxiety of children, and improve the satisfaction of nursing staff. Currently, there is little conclusive evidence for non-invasive moderate sedation strategies in pediatric dental surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The trial was conducted from May 2022 to September 2022...

Managing patients with autism in the dental clinic often requires resorting to pharmacological behavioral control techniques, including general anesthesia. References in the literature to desensitization programs are scarce and focus on training children with autism to undergo oral examinations and preventive procedures. This study shows that a dental desensitization program implemented by dentists and occupational therapists could help in performing not only oral examinations but also simple dental therapeutic procedures for a considerable percentage of adults with autism, without using a pharmacological intervention (sedation or general anesthesia)...

AbstractPediatric dentists rely on access to hospital operating rooms for safe, effective, and humane delivery of dental care. The children who benefit most from dental treatment in a hospital operating room are those who are very young, have dental anxieties or phobias, are precommunicative or noncommunicative, need extensive or invasive dental treatments, or have special healthcare needs. Diminishing access to hospital operating rooms for pediatric dental treatment has become an escalating problem in contemporary times...

OBJECTIVE: To compare the parental acceptance of dental treatment under general anesthesia and deep sedation in children and assess the changes in postoperative oral health-related quality of life and treatment efficacy. METHODS: The parents of 131 children undergoing dental treatment in the Department of Stomatology of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from January, 2022 to June, 2022 were surveyed using a questionnaire of children's advanced oral behavior management, and 83 children receiving general anesthesia or deep sedation for dental treatment between January, 2018 and December, 2021 were also investigated for changes in quality of life after the treatment using a questionnaire...

Dental treatment of epilepsy patients is often challenging and requires careful consideration of their sudden movements. Epilepsy patients often require sedation (e.g., nitrous oxide or intravenous sedation) to receive their required dental treatments. Rolandic epilepsy (RE) is a specific type of epilepsy in children with certain electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities and motor focal seizures with no signs of neurological deficits. This report discusses a case of an RE patient who was treated comprehensively under local anesthesia with careful evaluation of the patient's medical conditions...

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition which has posed a challenge to carers, pediatricians and dentists through the years. Over the last four decades, the disorder has been better understood and management techniques have evolved. In the field of dentistry, the autistic child presents difficulty in management, even for the simplest dental procedures. A comprehensive understanding of other psychoeducational and behavioral approaches to manage autism is very important...

MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: A total of 60 children between 3 and 12 years of age, with Frankl's behavior rating of 2-3 requiring IANB for any dental procedure were enrolled in this randomized clinical study. Group I ( n = 30) received N2 O and oxygen inhalation sedation at a concentration in the range of 25-50%, whereas group II ( n = 30) received 100% O2 as a placebo...

BACKGROUND: Dentists often use sedative medications such as nitrous oxide inhaled sedation and general anesthesia (GA) to help decrease patient fear and manage pediatric patients' behavior during treatment. AIM: The goal of this study was to examine factors associated with dental fear changes after restorative dental treatment under nitrous oxide or GA in children 4-12 years old. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study of 124 children examined changes in dental fear, number of treatment visits, and parental factors among children receiving restorative dental treatment under nitrous oxide (n=68) or GA (n=56) sedation...

OBJECTIVE: The risk of a spontaneous surgical fire increases as oxygen concentrations surrounding the surgical site rise above the normal atmospheric level of 21%. Previously published in vitro findings imply this phenomenon (termed oxygen pooling) occurs during dental procedures under sedation and general anesthesia; however, it has not been clinically documented. METHODS: Thirty-one children classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists I and II between 2 and 6 years of age undergoing office-based general anesthesia for complete dental rehabilitation were monitored for intraoral ambient oxygen concentration, end-tidal CO2, and respiratory rate changes immediately following nasotracheal intubation or insertion of nasopharyngeal airways, followed by high-speed suctioning of the oral cavity during simulated dental treatment...

Sedation with nitrous oxide (N2 O) has been widely used as a viable alternative to general anesthesia to perform dental treatments in uncooperative or anxious children. The purpose of this retrospective study is to assess if repeated sedations with N2 O can improve collaboration of uncooperative children. The medical records of 650 children, aged between 3 and 14 years, who underwent at least two sedations, were consulted. Differences in the Venham score during the first sedation and subsequent sedations were collected...

BACKGROUND: Globally, around 13% of children experience dental anxiety (DA). This group of patients frequently miss dental appointments, have greater reliance on treatment under general anaesthesia (GA) and have poorer oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) than their non-dentally anxious peers. Recently, a low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-based, self-help approach has been recommended for management of childhood anxiety disorders. A feasibility study conducted in secondary care found this guided self-help CBT resource reduced DA and a randomised controlled trial was recommended...
