Background: The gastric bypass has nutritional and electrolyte disturbances rate of approximately 17%. The most common deficits are protein malnutrition, ferric and zinc, in addition to the vitamin. Although rare, some malnutrition stages reach such severity that ends up being necessary hospitalization and sometimes revisional or reversal surgical procedures. Aim: To present a proposal of surgical revision for treatment of severe malnutrition after bariatric surgery...

This study evaluated the effect of the cement type (adhesive resin, self-adhesive, glass ionomer, and zinc phosphate) on the retention of crowns made of yttria-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP). Therefore, 108 freshly extracted molars were embedded in acrylic resin, perpendicular to their long axis, and prepared for full crowns: the crown preparations were removed and reconstructed using composite resin plus fiber posts with dimensions identical to the prepared dentin. The preparations were impressed using addition silicone, and Y-TZP copings were produced, which presented a special setup for the tensile testing...

The aim of this study was to assess the uniaxial tensile strength after thermal cycling in replicas of CeraOne abutments (abutment and coping sets), using four types of cements (n = 10). A zinc phosphate cement (Fosfato de Zinco/ SSW), a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RelyX luting / 3M-ESPE), a zinc oxide-eugenol cement (ZOE/ SSW) and a zinc oxide cement without eugenol (TempBond NE/ KERR) were used. After cementation, the samples were submitted to thermal cycles (1,000 cycles, 5 degrees C +/- 2 degrees to 55 degrees C +/- 2 degrees) for thirty seconds in each bath...

Reactive oxygen species have been hypothesized to play an important role in the process of aging. To investigate the correlation between oxidative stress and accumulation of protein and DNA damage, we have compared the age-dependent levels of protein carbonyl groups and the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in cytosol and mitochondrial extracts from liver cells of Wistar and OXYS rats. The latter strain is characterized by increased sensitivity to free radicals...

The highly diastereoselective zinco-cyclopropanation of chiral allylic alcohols using gem-dizinc carbenoids is described. The reaction produces three contiguous stereogenic centers, and the resulting chiral cyclopropylzinc derivatives can be trapped with electrophiles with retention of configuration. Simple functional group manipulations lead to the efficient synthesis of orthogonally protected 1,2,3-substituted cyclopropane derivatives.

COMPARATIVE STUDY

The biological model of prematurely aging OXYS rats is proposed for evaluation of anticataract activity of preparations. Pathological changes in the lens develop in 2-month-old OXYS rats. By the 6th month of life cataract morbidity rate attains 100%. Adrusen Zinco, Mirtilene Forte, blueberry extract, and vitamin E (Russian and from Sigma) possessing antioxidant properties and given with food decreased the number of OXYS rats with cataract. The preparation from blueberry Mirtilene Forte and blueberry extract normalized the content of lipid peroxidation products in the blood...

A long-term uptake of a diet supplemented with Mirtilene Forte (Vaccinum myrtillus extract) or Adrusen Zinco (a vitamin E complex with zinc, copper, selenium and omega-3 polyunsturated fatty acid) improved the functional state of liver mitochondria in OXYS rat strain. Adrusen Zinco sharply decreases the level of protein and lipid oxidation products. Possible mechanisms of the drug action are considered in relationship with their antioxidant properties.

9 months after immigration into Switzerland, a 38-year-old male patient from Liberia/West Africa developed granulomatous and subsequently ulcerative nodules in the face. The heterosexual patient, with no history of i.v. drug abuse, tested positive for HIV-2. Histology of a skin biopsy revealed superficial colonization by numerous fungal elements described as spores and hyphae that were compatible with the initial isolation of Candida parapsilosis. The definite diagnosis of African histoplasmosis was established 3 weeks later after review of the PAS-stained direct smear and after cultures had grown a cream-colored mold subsequently identified as Histoplasma capsulatum var...

The early detection of lead intoxitation needs practical, simple, reproducible and diagnostically valid screening test. The determination of ALA-D (delta-amino-levulinic acid-dehydratase) in erythrocytes is one of the most reliable test for the evaluation of the occupational exposure to lead. However this test is difficult to standardize, sensible to lead contamination of laboratory glassware and the activity of enzyme decreases rapidly if stored. The determination of erythrocytes ZPP (zinco-protoporphyrin IX) was proposed as useful, alternative test...
