BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI), one of the most prevalent health concerns confronting women aged over 60 years, affects up to 55% of older community-dwelling women-20-25% with severe symptoms. Clinical practice guidelines recommend individualized pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) as a first-line treatment for stress or mixed UI in women, although lack of human and financial resources limits delivery of this first-line treatment. Preliminary data suggest that group-based treatments may provide the answer...

Physical activity is a highly gendered health behaviour, with women less likely than men to meet internationally accepted physical activity guidelines. In this article, we take up recent arguments on the potential of indoor spaces to illuminate processes shaping health, together with social theories of gender, to conceptualize the place of the gym as a window into understanding and intervening in wider gender disparities in physical activity. Using a triangulated strategy of qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews, drawing, and journaling with men and women in a mid-sized Canadian city, we examine how gender influences exercise practices and mobilities in gym environments...

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) occupy sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats in 11 western states and 2 Canadian provinces. In September 2015, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the listing status for sage-grouse had changed from warranted but precluded to not warranted. The primary reason cited for this change of status was that the enactment of new regulatory mechanisms was sufficient to protect sage-grouse populations. One such plan is the 2008, Wyoming Sage Grouse Executive Order (SGEO), enacted by Governor Freudenthal...

BACKGROUND: Direct acting antivirals (DAAs) have revolutionized hepatitis C (HCV) treatment with >90% cure rates even in real-world studies, giving hope that HCV can be eliminated. However, for DAAs to have a population-level impact on the burden of HCV disease, treatment uptake needs to be expanded. We investigated temporal trends in HCV treatment uptake and evaluated factors associated with second-generation DAA initiation and efficacy among key HIV-HCV co-infected populations in Canada...

Climate change is profoundly affecting seasonality, biological productivity, and hydrology in high northern latitudes. In sensitive subarctic environments exploitation of mineral resources led to contamination and it is not known how cumulative effects of resource extraction and climate warming will impact ecosystems. Gold mines near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, subarctic Canada, operated from 1938 to 2004 and released >20,000t of arsenic trioxide (As2O3) to the environment through stack emissions...

Since the inception of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society heart failure (HF) guidelines in 2006, much has changed in the care for patients with HF. Over the past decade, the HF Guidelines Committee has published regular updates. However, because of the major changes that have occurred, the Guidelines Committee believes that a comprehensive reassessment of the HF management recommendations is presently needed, with a view to producing a full and complete set of updated guidelines. The primary and secondary Canadian Cardiovascular Society HF panel members as well as external experts have reviewed clinically relevant literature to provide guidance for the practicing clinician...

Guidelines for the management of hypertension have been issued by different hypertension societies or organizations. Despite many similarities one can identify major differences in the diagnosis, management and treatment of the hypertensive patients among ESH/ESC, NICE, Canadian and NJC8 guidelines. Differences that can be identified are in the definition of hypertension in the elderly population, the optimal blood pressure targets in different hypertensive populations such as patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease patients and the choose of the initial and appropriate antihypertensive agent depending on comorbidities of the treated population...

To investigate the bioavailability of thallium (Tl) in soil and rice in a Tl-contaminated area in Guangdong, China, the topsoil and rice samples were collected from 24 sampling sites and analyzed. Moreover, a modified sequential extraction procedure was applied to determine the different Tl fractions in the soil. The mean pH value of the soil samples was 4.50. The total Tl concentration in the paddy soil was about 4-8 times higher than the Canadian guideline value (1mgkg(-1)) for agricultural land uses. The mean ecological risk index of Tl was determined to be 483, indicating that potential hazard of the paddy soil was serious...
