New electrochemical probes offer the opportunity to investigate new systems. A dual barrel electrode can be laser pulled to produce micron-sized platinum disk electrodes. Here, we detail several important considerations for both the fabrication process and for experimental implimentation of the probe. We provide parameters for a Sutter P-2000 laser puller, methods for optical and electrochemical characterization, tips for how to successfully bevel the microelectrodes, and how salt concentrations and electrostatic discharge affect the voltammetry...

INTRODUCTION: To limit exposure to methylmercury several countries have implimented specific advice on fish intake to pregnant women as well a measuring compliance through regular human biomonitoring. Despite fish intake being relatively high in Iceland, human biomonitoring data on mercury is scarce. MATERIALS AND MEHODS: We measured mercury in hair from 120 pregnant women recruited in 2021 from the the Reykjavik Capital area. At recruitment, information on fish intake during the past four months was recorded...

Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula and tracheobronchomalacia encompass 2 of the most common complex congenital intrathoracic anomalies. Tailoring interventions to address the constellation of problems present in each patient is essential. Due to advances in neonatology, anesthesia, pulmonary, gastroenterology, nutrition and surgery care for patients with complex congenital tracheoesophageal disorders has improved dramatically. Treatment strategies tailored to the individual patient needs are best implimented under the aegis of a comprehensive longitudinal multidisciplinary care team...

The implimentation of newer technologies in drug delivery system have always been the focus of pharmaceutical scientists with advancement of technologies. In this investigation, a novel controlled-release drug-resin combination device (DRC) was designed using dental resin to control the release of dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DH). The influence of different factors on in-vitro drug release were investigated. A Box-Behnken design was used to select the optimized DRC formulation. The optimized DH loaded DRC (DH-DRC) was prepared using 59...

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is commonly affected by drought and famine, and this has taken quite a toll on citizens of the country, particularly the under-five children. Undernutrition among under-five children in Ethiopia is a prominent public health concern, and it lacked attention for decades. However, the government of Ethiopia, together with other stakeholders, committed to overcoming the impact of malnutrition through the transformational plan. Here we show the magnitude of undernutrition among under-five children and the factors predicting the achievement of global nutrition targets set for 2025 at the World Health Assembly...

In this work, a Pt nanoparticles-functionalized Co-based metal organic frameworks (PtNPs@Co(II)MOFs@PtNPs) was synthesized and applied in electrochemical aptasensor for thrombin (TB) detection. First, the Co(II)MOFs@PtNPs were prepared via the mixed solvothermal method, which consists of inner Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) encapsulated by aminofunctionalized Co(II)MOFs materials. Following that, additional PtNPs were adsorbed on the surface of Co(II)MOFs@PtNPs, resulting in the formation of PtNPs@Co(II)MOFs@PtNPs nanocomposite...

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal screening in early pregnancy is offered to all women in Iceland. In the case of an increased risk, invasive diagnostic test with 1% risk of fetal loss is offered. Recent developments include an exploration of a cell free fetal DNA in maternal plasma. The aim of this study was to explore factors that are of importance to pregnant women and professionals in fetal diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire incorporating a discrete choice experimental design was used...

People with serious mental illness face significant inequalities in physical health care. As a result, the risk of cardiometabolic disorders and premature mortality is far greater than that observed in the general population. Contributiung to this disparity, is the lack of routine physical health screening by mental health clinicians. One possible solution is the implimentation of a physical health nurse consultant, whose role is to monitor and coordinate the physical health care of people with serious mental illness...

BACKGROUND: Family history is considered an essential, obligatory part of the primary physician's intake interview. Including coded FH in a unified medical file can save expensive genetic tests and detect the early onset of diseases in young people who are not recommended to be screened routinely. The objectives of this study are to explore the frequency and point in time of recording the coded family history (FH) as a first step to increasing awareness of the importance of such information...

OBJECTIVE: Asthma is a common respiratory disease, the prevalence of which varies according to multiple demographic and economic factors. The availability of therapy and implimentation of treatment guidelines has made the asthma mortality rate stable or gradually in decline. This study was conducted to evaluate the mortality trend of asthmatic patients who died during hospitalization in a tertiary care center. METHODS: A retrospective study of hospitalized asthmatic patients was conducted by reviewing medical records selected on the basis of primary or secondary diagnosis of asthma, between January 2000 and December 2010...

UNLABELLED: Congenital spine and thorax deformities are an interdisciplinary clinical problem. Apart from trunk deformity they may lead to respiratory or cardiovascular insufficiency. Surgical treatment should be implimented as soon as possible in order to improve posture, balance and further development. This treatment should not impair further growth of the young spine. This is possible with the VEPTR device. AIM OF PAPER: Aim of paper is presentation of initial results of surgical treatment of congenital spine deformities with the VEPTR system...

This article presents an algorithm for approximate frequentist conditional inference on two or more parameters for any regression model in the Generalized Linear Model (GLIM) family. We thereby extend highly accurate inference beyond the cases of logistic regression and contingency tables implimented in commercially available software. The method makes use of the double saddlepoint approximations of Skovgaard (1987, Journal of Applied Probability 24, 875-887) and Jensen (1992, Biometrika 79, 693-703) to the conditional cumulative distribution function of a sufficient statistic given the remaining sufficient statistics...

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services have developed a five-point set of sodium initiatives aimed at moderation of sodium consumption, improved sodium-related information for consumers and health professionals, and improved consumer choice in the marketplace. Implimentation is fundamentally based on a voluntary premise, and indications to date are that the program is working. FDA has established a series of tracking systems to measure change over time, particularly relative to changes in the sodium content of the food supply, in the sodium content of American diets, in sodium labeling -- both quantitative and qualitative, in consumer understanding of the sodium-and-hypertension problem, and in consumer food purchasing practices...
