In the developed world, the incidence of cervical squamous cell carcinoma has decreased, however, the incidence of adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and invasive adenocarcinoma increased, predominantly in young females. The goal of this study was to evaluate the most recent incidence rates of AIS, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix in the Netherlands in 2004-2013. By using Dutch national pathology and cancer registries, we calculated European standardized incidence rates (ESR) and estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) for AIS during 2004-2013 and for invasive cervical carcinomas during 1989-2013...

Cancer of the uterine cervix (CACX) is one of the most common carcinoma affecting women worldwide. During treatment, histologically lymph node (LN) metastasis and presence of HPV DNA in blood plasma act as a major prognostic factor. Despite the lack of apparent LN involvement, some early-invasive CACX patients have shown recurrences and poor survival. This is suggestive of undetected early dissemination of cancer cells characterized by presence of HPV DNA in histologically non-metastatic LNs which finally progresses into histologically visible metastasis...

Uterine carcinoma of the lower uterine segment (LUS) is a rare tumor that accounts for 3-3.5% of cases of uterine malignant cancer. The tumor arises from the lower region of the uterine body through the upper region of the cervix. The present study reported a case of clear cell carcinoma that originated from the LUS. A 50-year-old woman visited a local hospital due to irregular vaginal bleeding. She was suspected to have a uterine tumor and was referred to Tachikawa Hospital (Tokyo, Japan). Transvaginal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a uterine tumor from the lower region of the uterine body through the upper region of the cervix...

Reports of cases of splenic metastasis are very rare, even more so when they are derived from a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the cecum. The most common presentation of a solitary splenic metastasis is from lung primary tumors, endometrium, ovary, cervix, stomach, colon, breast, bladder, and skin. We report the case of an 84-year-old woman with a solitary splenic metastasis from a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the cecum. Until this work, only 18 cases of solitary splenic metastases from colorectal carcinomas have been described in the literature...

Cisplatin and paclitaxel both can cause peripheral neurotoxicity as an adverse effect; however, central nervous system neurotoxicity in the form of seizures is rare. We report a case of a 36-year-old female patient of metastatic carcinoma cervix, who developed seizure shortly after cisplatin infusion. Her laboratory investigations were within normal limits. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain did not reveal brain primary metastasis or meningeal carcinomatosis. She had no complaints of fever, no signs and symptoms of infection, and no history of seizure nor was she on any medication predisposing to such an event...

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are aggressive diseases developing from neuroendocrine cells that most frequently involve the gastro-entero-pancreatic tract and the lung, but more rarely are found in almost all body tissues. Limited biological and clinical data are currently available for NETs in uncommon sites, such as female genital tract. NETs represent 0.9% to 1.5% of the tumors of the uterine cervix. They are more likely to have lymph-vascular space invasion and lymph node involvement, and to develop local and distant relapses when compared with the mostly common cervical squamous cell carcinomas or adenocarcinomas...

PURPOSE: A retrospective comparison of dose distributions achievable by High dose rate brachytherapy (HDRBT), Helical TomoTherapy (TOMO), CyberKnife (CK) and RapidArc (RA) in locally advanced inoperable cervical cancer patients is presented. METHODS: Five patients with advanced stage cervical carcinoma were selected for this study after a full course of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), chemotherapy and HDR Brachytherapy. To highlight any significant similarities/differences in dose distributions, high-risk clinical target volume (HRCTV) coverage, organs at risk (OAR) sparing, and machine specific delivery limitations, we used D90 (dose received by 90% of the volume) as the parameter for HRCTV coverage as recommended by the GEC-ESTRO Working Group...

The neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the cervix is a rare malignancy that has a poor prognosis due to early lymphatic and hematogenous spread. We herein report a case of a 27- year-old woman who was referred for initial staging of a neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma with previous unremarkable structural imaging. Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT revealed focal uptake at the primary tumor and in a solitary pelvic bone lesion suggestive of metastases that was further confirmed by CT-guided biopsy. Somatostatin receptor PET/CT may be a useful image modality for early detection of metastases to guide treatment in these patients...

Antimicrobial peptides are a pivotal component of the invertebrate innate immune system. In this study, we identified a lipopolysaccharide- and β-1,3-glucan-binding protein (LGBP) gene from the pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai (HDH), which is involved in the pattern recognition mechanism and plays avital role in the defense mechanism of invertebrates immune system. The HDH-LGBP cDNA consisted of a 1263-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a polypeptide of 420 amino acids, with a 20-amino-acid signal sequence...
