INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused global devastations in the social, economic and health systems of every nation, but disproportionately the nations in Africa. Apart from its grave effects on the global systems, is the persistence of post-COVID-19 condition in individuals infected with the virus. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review is to collate and summarise the existing research evidence about the prevalence and health effects of post-COVID-19 infection conditions in Africa...

Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor autoantibodies (TRAbs) play a crucial role as pathogenic antibodies in both the diagnosis and management of Graves' disease (GD). GD, an autoimmune disease resulting from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. With advancements in technology for TRAb detection and the availability of automated commercial kits, TRAb has become an essential clinical laboratory marker for the diagnosis of GD, as well as extra-thyroidal manifestations like Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO)...

Diagnosis and therapy of orbital diseases is an interdisciplinary challenge, in which i.e. otorhinolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, radiologists, radiation therapists, maxillo-facial surgeons, endocrinologists, and pediatricians are involved. This review article describes frequent diseases which both, otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists are concerned with in interdisciplinary settings. In particular the inflammatory diseases of the orbit including orbital complications, autoimmunological diseases of the orbit including Grave´s orbitopathy, and primary and secondary tumors of the orbit are discussed...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated a high prevalence of concurrent autoimmune diseases in individuals with Graves' disease (GD). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to establish a causal association between GD and autoimmune diseases. METHODS: We employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to infer a causal association between GD and five autoimmune diseases, namely rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in the East Asian and European population...

PURPOSE: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is characterized by proliferation of orbital tissues and complicated by compressive optic neuropathy (CON). This study aims to utilize a deep-learning (DL)-based automated segmentation model to segment orbital muscle and fat volumes on computed tomography (CT) images and provide quantitative volumetric data and a machine learning (ML)-based classifier to distinguish between TED and TED with CON. METHODS: Subjects with TED who underwent clinical evaluation and orbital CT imaging were included...

Brazil presents high maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Cases of severe maternal morbidity, maternal near miss, and perinatal deaths are important health indicators and share the same determinants, being closely related to living conditions and quality of perinatal care. This article aims to present the study protocol to estimate the perinatal mortality rate and the incidence of severe maternal morbidity and maternal near miss in the country, identifying its determinants. This case report explores a rare presentation of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in a 59-year-old female with a history of Graves' disease (GD), highlighting the diagnostic challenges and the importance of considering thyroid dysfunctions in RLS. The patient, previously diagnosed and treated for GD, presented with acute nocturnal discomfort in her lower limbs, along with symptoms of fatigue, weight loss, and palpitations. Physical examinations and thyroid function tests indicated a recurrence of GD. Her RLS symptoms notably resolved following the treatment of GD with methimazole, pointing towards secondary RLS induced by GD...

Cytokine storm (CS) refers to the spontaneous dysregulated and hyper-activated inflammatory reaction occurring in various clinical conditions, ranging from microbial infection to end-stage organ failure. Recently the novel coronavirus involved in COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) has been associated with the pathological phenomenon of CS in critically ill patients. Furthermore, critically ill patients suffering from CS are likely to have a grave prognosis and a higher case fatality rate...

To determine how language is implemented in the brain, it is important to know which brain areas are primarily engaged in language processing and which are not. Existing protocols for localizing language are typically univariate, treating each small unit of brain volume as independent. One prominent example that focuses on the overall language network in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) uses a contrast between neural responses to sentences and sets of pseudowords (pronounceable nonwords). This contrast reliably activates peri-sylvian language areas but is less sensitive to extra-sylvian areas that are also known to support aspects of language such as word meanings (semantics)...

The water quality evolution of surface and groundwater caused by mining activities and mine drainage is a grave public concern worldwide. To explore the effect of mine drainage on sulfate evolution, a multi-aquifer system in a typical coal mine in Northwest China was investigated using multi-isotopes (δ34 SSO4 , δ18 OSO4 , δD, and δ18 Owater ) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model. Before mining, the Jurassic aquifer was dominated by gypsum dissolution, accompanied by cation exchange and bacterial sulfate reduction, and the phreatic aquifers and surface water were dominated by carbonate dissolution...

Metal contamination in drinking water has drawn attention since it gravely jeopardizes human health. This study was conducted in pre- and post-monsoon season in 2021 at Dhemaji, Assam, India. It characterized metal pollutants in groundwater, their distribution, possible sources, and evaluated the potential toxicity and associated health risk assessment. The seasonal mean concentration of Fe in both seasons is observed highest followed by Mn, Zn, Cu, As, and Ni. Furthermore, the metal concentrations during pre-monsoon are comparatively higher...
