Coxiella (C.) burnetii , a zoonotic bacterium, is prevalent in dairy farms. Some cows develop a persistent infection and shed C. burnetii into milk and occasionally by amniotic fluid at calving. Serological diagnosis of Q fever in humans is performed by phase (Ph)-specific antibody tests; PhII antibodies usually indicate an acute infection, while the development of a chronic infection is characterised by elevated PhI antibody titres. Phase-specific tests have now been established for diagnosis of coxiellosis in cattle...

In this study, a carbon fiber microelectrode (CF) was applied for the investigation of the electrochemical behavior of the natural antioxidant, apocynin (APO). Given the limited solubility of APO in water, a mixture of anhydrous acetic acid (AcH) with 20%, v / v acetonitrile (AN) and 0.1 mol L-1 sodium acetate (AcNa) was used. The electrochemical properties of APO were examined through linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The anodic oxidation of APO, which is the basis of the method used, proved to be diffusion-controlled and proceeded with a two-electron and one proton exchange...

The spread of neophytes (non-native plant species) challenges the conservation status and ecological integrity of forests, especially in lowland areas. Long-term resurvey studies are needed to evaluate the temporal dynamics of neophytes in forests; however, such data are scarce. In 2023, we resampled a set of 45 permanent vegetation plots (established in 1992/93) in two forest vegetation types: oak-hornbeam forests dominated by Quercus robur and colline oak-beech forests dominated by Q. petraea . Over the last 30 years, oak forests have experienced extensive oak tree mortality, with the degree of habitat degradation being greater in Q...

In hyperglycemia, the serum sodium concentration ( [Na]S ) receives influences from (a) the fluid exit from the intracellular compartment and thirst, which cause [Na]S decreases; (b) osmotic diuresis with sums of the urinary sodium plus potassium concentration lower than the baseline euglycemic [Na]S , which results in a [Na]S increase; and (c), in some cases, gains or losses of fluid, sodium, and potassium through the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, and the skin. Hyperglycemic patients with hypernatremia have large deficits of body water and usually hypovolemia and develop severe clinical manifestations and significant mortality...

With the rapid development of economic globalization and green manufacturing, traditional flexible job shop scheduling has evolved into the low-carbon heterogeneous distributed flexible job shop scheduling problem (LHDFJSP). Additionally, modern smart manufacturing processes encounter complex and diverse contingencies, necessitating the ability to address dynamic events in real-world production activities. To date, there are limited studies that comprehensively address the intricate factors associated with the LHDFJSP, including workshop heterogeneity, job insertions and transfers, and considerations of low-carbon objectives...

Video surveillance systems are integral to bolstering safety and security across multiple settings. With the advent of deep learning (DL), a specialization within machine learning (ML), these systems have been significantly augmented to facilitate DL-based video surveillance services with notable precision. Nevertheless, DL-based video surveillance services, which necessitate the tracking of object movement and motion tracking (e.g., to identify unusual object behaviors), can demand a significant portion of computational and memory resources...

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth complications are the leading cause of newborn and under-5 mortality. Over 85% of all preterm births occur in the late preterm period, i.e. between 34 and < 37 weeks of gestation. Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) prevent mortality and respiratory morbidity when administered to women at high risk of an early preterm birth, i.e. < 34 weeks' gestation. However, the benefits and risks of ACS in the late preterm period are less clear; both guidelines and practices vary between settings...

BACKGROUND: Hepatic arterial infusion pump chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy (HAIP-SYS) for liver-only colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs) has shown promising results but has not been adopted worldwide. This study evaluated the feasibility of HAIP-SYS in the Netherlands. METHODS: This was a single-arm phase II study of patients with CRLMs who received HAIP-SYS consisting of floxuridine with concomitant systemic FOLFOX or FOLFIRI. Main inclusion and exclusion criteria were borderline resectable or unresectable liver-only metastases, suitable arterial anatomy and no previous local treatment...

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is an arthropod-borne virus that emerged recently in northwestern Europe in 2011 that affects domestic and wild ruminants and induces abortion, stillbirth, and newborns with congenital anomalies. Since its discovery, SBV has spread very rapidly to too many countries in the world. The overall serological investigation of SBV is needed to improve modeling predictions and assess the overall impact on ruminant animals, which helps to design interventions for control and prevention strategies...

Nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) are essential for tree growth and adaptation, yet our understanding of the seasonal storage and mobilization dynamics of whole-tree NSC is still limited, especially when tree functional types are involved. Here, Quercus acutissima Carruth. and Pinus massoniana Lamb. with distinct life-history traits (i.e., a deciduous broadleaf species vs. an evergreen coniferous species) were studied to assess the size and seasonal fluctuations of organ and whole-tree NSC pools with a focus on comparing differences in carbon resource mobilization patterns between the two species...

During 25 surveys of global Phytophthora diversity, conducted between 1998 and 2020, 43 new species were detected in natural ecosystems and, occasionally, in nurseries and outplantings in Europe, Southeast and East Asia and the Americas. Based on a multigene phylogeny of nine nuclear and four mitochondrial gene regions they were assigned to five of the six known subclades, 2a-c, e and f, of Phytophthora major Clade 2 and the new subclade 2g. The evolutionary history of the Clade appears to have involved the pre-Gondwanan divergence of three extant subclades, 2c, 2e and 2f, all having disjunct natural distributions on separate continents and comprising species with a soilborne and aquatic lifestyle and, in addition, a few partially aerial species in Clade 2c; and the post-Gondwanan evolution of subclades 2a and 2g in Southeast/East Asia and 2b in South America, respectively, from their common ancestor...

Based on seven- and three-gene datasets, we discuss four alternative approaches for a reclassification of Fomitopsidaceae (Polyporales , Basidiomycota) . After taking into account morphological diversity in the family, we argue in favour of distinguishing three genera only, viz . Anthoporia , Antrodia and Fomitopsis . Fomitopsis becomes a large genus with 128 accepted species, containing almost all former Fomitopsis spp. and most species formerly placed in Antrodia , Daedalea and Laccocephalum . Genera Buglossoporus , Cartilosoma , Daedalea , Melanoporia , Neolentiporus , alongside twenty others, are treated as synonyms of Fomitopsis ...

To isolate RNA phages, they assessed the infection specificity of male Escherichia coli and RNase sensitivity. They found that the isolated strains of RNA phages could be serologically separated into three groups. Furthermore, most of them were serologically related, and the antiphage rabbit serum prepared by one of these phages neutralized most of the other phages. The only serologically unrelated phage was the RNA phage Qβ, which was isolated at the Institute for Virus Research, Kyoto University, in 1961...
