Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare type of stroke, most often observed in young women. This is a case of a young, pregnant woman who presented to the emergency department with a complaint of sudden onset of headache and was diagnosed with CVT. This report discusses how to approach the diagnosis of CVT in pregnant women, including clinical manifestations, investigation tools, treatments, and prognosis from the literature, in comparison to this case.

BACKGROUND: Headaches during pregnancy and the post-partum period may be due to either an exacerbation of a pre-existing neurological presentation, a new pregnancy-related process, or a non-pregnancy related condition. Key physiologic changes during pregnancy and the post-partum period contribute to the vulnerability of this patient population and the increased risk of complications. OBJECTIVE OF THE REVIEW: Review causes of headaches in pregnant and post-partum patients as well as neuroimaging techniques performed...

INTRODUCTION:  Inherited dysfibrinogenemia is a qualitative defect of fibrinogen caused by various mutations among three fibrinogen genes. Dysfibrinogenemia can be associated with an increased risk of thrombosis, bleeding, or both. Here, we report a 36-year-old female with dysfibrinogenemia who experienced two successful pregnancies under thromboprophylaxis after cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). PATIENTS AND METHODS:  In addition to plasmatic coagulation tests, fibrinogen genes FGA , FGB , and FGG were screened using direct genomic DNA sequencing...

UNLABELLED: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a common condition that, if not detected and treated promptly, carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality. CVST's most common aetiological associations are post-partum, pregnancy, and oral contraceptive pills. The purpose of this study was to look into the aetiology of CVST in Sudanese patients in neurological centres in Khartoum state. METHODOLOGY: This was a cross-sectional hospital bases study conducted on CVST patients at four neurological centres in Khartoum state in the period from March to October 2020...

IMPORTANCE: Women with pregnancy-associated stroke might have different risks of stroke recurrence, including during subsequent pregnancies, and other cardiovascular events due to pregnancy-specific stroke risk factors, such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, or gestational diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the rate of stroke recurrence, cardiovascular hospitalization, and death in women with pregnancy-associated stroke compared with women with non-pregnancy-associated stroke...

UNLABELLED: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a relatively common disease. Risk factors for CVT include pregnancy, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and hypercoagulation. Acute and chronic meningitis are also considered predisposing conditions for CVT. Cases of CVT associated with tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis (TB) are rare in the medical literature, and here the authors report the first case report from Middle East. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a 33-year-old female patient diagnosed initially with CVT to discover the presence of tuberculous meningitis and miliary TB...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a cerebrovascular disease observed more commonly in women of childbearing age. There is currently no biomarker used to predict the risk of CVT during the follow-up of pregnant/postpartum patients. In this context, the objective of this study is to investigate the importance of fibrinogen and albumin levels and fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR) values, which predispose to thromboembolism, in pregnant/postpartum patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study sample consisted of 19 pregnant/postpartum patients with a diagnosis of CVT, 20 pregnant/postpartum patients without CVT...

COVID-19 has been associated with numerous neurological complications, with acute cerebrovascular disease being one of the most devastating complications. Ischemic stroke is the most common cerebrovascular complication of COVID-19, affecting between 1 and 6% of all patients. Underlying mechanisms for COVID-related ischemic strokes are thought to be due to vasculopathy, endotheliopathy, direct invasion of the arterial wall, and platelet activation. Other COVID-19-associated cerebrovascular complications include hemorrhagic stroke, cerebral microbleeds, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and subarachnoid hemorrhage...

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has led to significant mortality and morbidity, including a high incidence of related thrombotic events. There has been concern regarding hormonal contraception use during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is an independent risk factor for thrombosis, particularly with estrogen-containing formulations. However, higher estrogen levels may be protective against severe COVID-19 disease. Evidence for risks of hormonal contraception use during the COVID-19 pandemic is sparse...

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an uncommon cause of stroke in young adults. We aimed to determine the impact of age, gender and risk factors (including sex-specific) on CVT onset. METHODS: We used data from the BEAST (Biorepository to Establish the Aetiology of Sinovenous Thrombosis), a multicentre multinational prospective observational study on CVT. Headache is a common symptom during pregnancy and in puerperium that requires careful consideration, as it may be caused by a life-threatening condition. Headaches in pregnant women and women in puerperium are classified as primary or secondary; acute, severe and newly diagnosed headaches should prompt further investigation. We aimed to further characterise the demographic features, symptoms, examination findings, and neuroimaging results of cases of headache during pregnancy and in puerperium. All pregnant women or women in postpartum conditions who attended neurological consultations at the emergency department of the clinic for Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine of Saarland University/Germany between 2001/2015 and 2012/2019 were enrolled in this retrospective chart review...

Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare type of stroke, with a complex clinical presentation that can make it a diagnostic challenge for the swift initiation of anticoagulation. When a hemorrhagic transformation is added, therapeutic management becomes even more complex. We describe a series of four cases, aged between 23 and 37 years old, with cerebral venous thrombosis. They were admitted to our clinic between 2014 and 2022. All cases presented significant challenges in either diagnostic, therapeutic or etiologic evaluation, at different stages of the disease...

Coronavirus 19 disease (COVID-19) is known to predispose patients to increased thrombotic events and the risk is higher in pregnancy which is already a hypercoagulable state. Vertical transmission of the disease during pregnancy was neglected according to data early in the pandemic, however, despite conflicting results from different studies, there is an increasing suspicion of vertical transmission with the rise of new fetal and neonatal cases and perinatal transmission can be higher than expected. An early term neonate, with the history of maternal COVID-19 infection in the start of third trimester, was diagnosed as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and chronic hemorrhagic ischemia, with intrauterine onset...
