Thrombosis and thrombophlebitis of the facial vein represent exceptionally rare diagnoses, particularly when occurring as complications of acute sialadenitis of the submandibular gland. This case report details the experience of a middle-aged man initially presenting at a tertiary care ear, nose and throat department with right submandibular gland sialadenitis. Despite initiating outpatient treatment involving oral antibiotics and sialagogues, the patient returned after a week with persistent and worsening pain, accompanied by swelling of the right submandibular gland and cheek...

Previous studies have compared levobupivacaine versus ropivacaine in various peripheral nerve blocks in terms of block duration, quality of analgesia, and onset time, but this has not occurred in the PENG block. Here, a single-center, randomized, and controlled clinical trial is presented. One hundred and twenty patients older than 65 years suffering from hip fractures and surgically treated at our institution under spinal anesthesia were eligible for participation; of them, one hundred and eight were analyzed...

Ectopic pregnancy, characterized by the aberrant implantation of blastocysts outside the uterine endometrial lining, typically occurs within the fallopian tube. Clinical presentation of tubal pregnancy ranges from asymptomatic cases to a spectrum of symptoms, including amenorrhea, pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, and, critically, hemorrhagic shock resulting from tubal rupture. Utilizing serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels and ultrasound examinations is pivotal in confirming the diagnosis. Diagnosing tubal pregnancy during the first trimester is feasible and crucial to prevent rupture, yet reports of fatal cases persist due to delays in diagnosis or misdiagnosis...

Following the initial liver biopsy attempts, several techniques using a wide range of methodologies and materials were developed. Many studies on the evaluation of post-liver biopsy complications were conducted. However, their fundamental limitation was significant variance in patient demographics and methodology, which might account for the inconsistent outcomes. Therefore, a uniform methodology to perform percutaneous liver biopsies that result in comparable outcomes around the world is required. This study aimed to determine the precise complication rate following percutaneous liver biopsy using a consistent method in all individuals...

An adolescent female presented with an acute abdomen and elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels and underwent a laparoscopy for a suspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Intraoperatively, a ruptured haemorrhagic corpus luteal cyst and tissues suggestive of products of conception were noted in the same ovary. Histology confirmed an ovarian ectopic pregnancy. Haemorrhagic ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancies, can cause acute pelvic pain in women of childbearing age. Their similar clinical signs and symptoms pose a diagnostic dilemma for any gynaecologist...

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are effectively treated with bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) surgery, yet postoperative pain management remains a challenge. This study explores the efficacy of multimodal pain management in minimizing opioid use and enhancing recovery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 87 patients who underwent BHA between September 2016 and September 2020 was conducted. Patients were analyzed in two groups: Group I ( n = 42), receiving serial-injection nerve blocks (SINBs) before and after surgery, and Group II ( n = 41), with no SINB...

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography has received broad acceptance as an effective peripheral nervous imaging examination. Shear wave elastography (SWE) can quantitatively assess the stiffness of nerves; however, little research has been conducted on elastography for ulnar nerve dislocation. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate the characteristics of multimodal ultrasound, including high-resolution ultrasonography and SWE, for asymptomatic ulnar nerve dislocation at cubital tunnel...

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to compare the correlation and agreement of epidural depth estimation using ultrasound in the paramedian sagittal oblique (PSO) versus the transverse median (TM) plane relative to the actual epidural depth observed during midline epidural punctures in children with scoliosis. The paraovarian or paratubarian cysts are both situated in the broad ligament between the ovary and fallopian tube. The diagnosis of adnexal torsion is challenging since both symptoms and physical examination are nonspecific. In most cases, the patient presents abdominal pain, followed by nausea and vomiting. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound, are very useful to elucidate the cause of the symptoms in those patients.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of lung cancer, as well as that of lung nodules, is increasing. Percutaneous biopsy has become a transcendental tool for its diagnosis. Traditionally, computed tomography is used for these procedures because of its ability to clearly demonstrate bone and aerated lung. However, in selected cases it can be performed with ultrasound. BACKGROUND: The paraspinal muscles, including multifidus (MF) and erector spinae (ES) play key roles in the stability and movement of the lumbar spine. This study aimed to determine the intra-rater reliability of the ES and MF muscle thickness measures of the rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) in people with active extension pattern (AEP) non-specific chronic low back pain and controls. METHODS: Fifteen females with AEP and 19 controls participated in this test-retest intra-rater reliability study, including two different testing sessions performed in four to seven days apart...

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to elucidate fibrosis in patients who visited our outpatient clinic with complaints such as abdominal pain and dyspepsia and who had fatty liver by ultrasound imaging. METHODS: A total of 119 patients who were admitted to the gastroenterology outpatient clinic of our institution with incidentally detected hepatosteatosis on ultrasound imaging were included in the study. Primary failure of thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) remains an important clinical problem, whose incidence can exceed 20% in teaching centers. Since loss-of-resistance (LOR) constitutes the most popular method to identify the thoracic epidural space, the etiology of primary TEA failure can often be attributed to LOR's low specificity. Interspinous ligamentous cysts, non-fused ligamenta flava, paravertebral muscles, intermuscular planes, and thoracic paravertebral spaces can all result in non-epidural LORs...

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Percutaneous core-needle biopsy of the testicle has been shown to be a safe and effective method of obtaining tissue for histological analysis and can be considered in specific clinical scenarios. While the use of spermatic cord block has been shown to be effective in pain relief in the emergent setting and as an anaesthetic option for inguinal surgery, its use in percutaneous core-needle biopsy has not been well described. Through this case series, we present our experience and technique of ultrasound-guided percutaneous core-needle biopsy using spermatic cord block in the setting of indeterminant testicular masses...

Emergency physicians (EPs) frequently integrate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into the initial bedside evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department with acute flank pain. A POCUS-first diagnostic approach can allow EPs to promptly assess for life-threatening pathologies of the aorta and gallbladder. POCUS is also a critical bedside tool to determine renal causes of acute flank pain, such as hydronephrosis in the setting of nephrolithiasis, subcapsular hematomas, renal abscesses, pyelonephritis, and renal masses...

Arterial blood gas, with subsequent radial arterial puncture as a simple access point, comprises a ubiquitous medical procedure in the diagnostic workup of patients admitted to the emergency department with dyspnea. An abdominal ultrasound scan revealed an omental infarction (OI), which was treated conservatively. OI has been described in overweight teenage children with abdominal trauma but can be missed if not considered. A missed diagnosis could result in an unnecessary laparotomy or laparoscopic surgery. Although CT is the gold standard for diagnosis, ultrasonography is an effective approach to identifying OI in children...
