Adipokinetic hormones (AKHs), the neurohormones synthesized in insect corpora cardiaca are known to mobilize lipids and carbohydrates for energy-consuming activities including reproduction. However, both inhibitory and stimulatory effects of AKHs on insect reproduction have been reported, and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Using the migratory locust Locusta migratoria as a model system, we report here that AKHs are expressed in response to rhythmic diel change, and AKH III expression increases markedly at photophase...

Although glucose-sensing neurons were identified more than 50 years ago, the physiological role of glucose sensing in metazoans remains unclear. Here we identify a pair of glucose-sensing neurons with bifurcated axons in the brain of Drosophila. One axon branch projects to insulin-producing cells to trigger the release of Drosophila insulin-like peptide 2 (dilp2) and the other extends to adipokinetic hormone (AKH)-producing cells to inhibit secretion of AKH, the fly analogue of glucagon. These axonal branches undergo synaptic remodelling in response to changes in their internal energy status...

Better understanding the mechanisms of Leonurus cardiaca L. extract (LCE) activity is necessary to prepare recommendations for the use of LCE-based herbal products for preventive/supportive purposes in case of infective endocarditis (IE) and other staphylococcal invasive infections. The aim of the study was to analyze molecular mechanisms of LCE effect on Staphylococcus aureus and blood platelets in the context of their interactions playing a pivotal role in such disorders. Using atomic force microscopy, we demonstrated that adhesion forces of S...

Introduction: Trypanosoma cruzi is the causal agent of the American trypanosomiasis, an endemic disease in México. The commensal rodents Mus musculus and Rattus rattus are reservoirs of this parasite, which invades cardiac fibers and develops parasite nests causing various lesions. Histopathological studies in naturally infected rodents are scarce. Objective: To describe the types and frequencies of microscopic lesions in cardiac tissue of M. musculus and R. rattus infected with T. cruzi captured in Mérida, México...

Seventeen species of the coleopteran series Cucujiformia are investigated for the presence and sequence of putative adipokinetic hormones (AKHs). Cucujiformia includes species from the major superfamilies, that is, Chrysomeloidea, Curculionoidea, Cucujoidea, and Tenebrionoidea. The clade Phytophaga in which the Chrysomeloidea and Curculionoidea reside, harbor very detrimental species for agriculture and forestry. Thus, this study aims not only to demonstrate the structural biodiversity of AKHs in these beetle species and possible evolutionary trends but also to determine whether the AKHs from harmful pest species can be used as lead substances for a future putative insecticide that is harmless to beneficial insects...

However, it is not known whether Leo promotes perforator flap survival. METHODS: In this study, a perforator flap was outlined in the rat dorsum. The rats that survived surgery were divided randomly to control and Leo groups (n = 36 per group). Flap viability, flap perfusion, and level of protein linked with oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and angiogenesis were evaluated...

Preoperative assessment in non-cardiac surgery is essential to reducing the rate of in-hospital complications. Its purpose is to identify patients with higher levels of risk. Preoperative assessment should not be restricted to cardiovascular aspects, but it should focus on all organs and systems and include medication reconciliation. Heart failure (HF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and most chronic diseases are associated with mild to moderate chronic or recurrent inflammation. This inflammation contributes to malnutrition through different mechanisms: anorexia, decreased intake, alteration of metabolism with increased energy expenditure at rest and increased muscle catabolism. The decrease in lean mass has been included as a phenotypic criterion in the recently coined definition of malnutrition. In addition, a greater importance is given to the evaluation of the function, together with that of the morphological parameters...

We have used CAD software and selective laser sintering technology to produce (1) extruded hollow profiles with various cross-sections analogous to internodes, and (2) integrated additional elements mimicking nodes...

Leonurus cardiaca L. (motherwort) is a perennial herb, native to Asia and southeastern Europe, with widespread global occurrence in present days. The plant was historically used as cardiotonic and for treating gynaecological afflictions (such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, menopausal anxiety, or postpartum depression). Although its use in oriental and occidental medicine is relatively well documented, the recent progress registered raises the need for an update of the Medicines Agency assessment report on Leonurus cardiaca L...

It is known for almost 25 years that the corpora cardiaca (neurosecretory glands) of cicadas synthesize two isobaric peptides with hypertrehalosaemic activity denominated Placa-HrTH-I and II. Both decapeptides have the same amino acid sequence (pGlu-Val-Asn-Phe-Ser-Pro-Ser-Trp-Gly-Asn amide) and mass, but differ in their chromatographic retention time. The slightly more hydrophobic peptide, Placa-HrTH-II, co-elutes with the synthetic peptide of the same sequence and is less active in biological assays than Placa-HrTH-I...

The isomer structural discrimination is a significant challenge in metabolome analysis based on ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). In this study, a new discriminating metabolite isomerism strategy is proposed to elucidate the metabolome, especially the isomers, of Leonurus japonicus and Leonurus cardiaca. This strategy consists of three steps. First, the metabolite biosynthesis pathways are constructed based on a home-built compound database to rapidly profile the compounds of interest using the multiple diagnostic product ions (DPIs) screening analysis and binary comparison based on SUMPRODUCT function...
