Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome is a rare disorder generally characterised by a craniofacial nevus with multisystemic presentations. Our patient, an infant, was brought to the emergency department in a postictal state following a first seizure episode. A physical examination showed a solitary dark brown, well-demarcated verrucous plaque extending from the patient's left temporal region to the left mandible without crossing the midline. Epibulbar choristomas were present on the ipsilateral side of the craniofacial lesion...

The differential diagnosis of a tongue mass containing calcified bodies includes a phlebolith associated with vascular lesions, such as hemangioma and vascular malformation, and diseases such as neoplasm, osseous choristoma and hypercalcemic states, including hyperparathyroidism. The appearance of the calcified bodies on plain radiographs may help to differentiate these entities. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography are also useful for differentiating these soft tissue lesions...

A 66-years-old female presented with impaired hearing of two-year duration and a recent ear discharge. High-resolution computed tomography and intra-operative findings showed a mass lesion in the right middle ear cavity that was unconnected with the brain. A histopathological diagnosis of glial heterotopia was made and an etiopathogenic hypothesis was analysed.

Ectopic salivary gland tissue is the presence of normal salivary gland tissue developing outside of the major and minor salivary glands. We present a rare, incidental case of lingual ectopic salivary gland tissue in a 52-year-old male with known Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, diagnosed on imaging as tongue mass. Excisional biopsy of the left tongue base lesion was performed and histologic examination revealed ectopic salivary gland tissue. We found only a few cases in literature of ectopic salivary gland tissue situated in the tongue...

A 60-year-old male patient who presented with right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis after an ultrasound of the abdomen revealed multiple gallstones, gallbladder wall thickening, pericholecystic fluid, and a positive sonographic Murphy sign. The patient was admitted, administered IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain relief, and scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. During surgery, an incidental finding of ectopic liver tissue attached to the gallbladder was noted. Histopathology confirmed the presence of chronic cholecystitis and multifaceted cholesterol stones...

Choristoma is one of the varieties of congenital developmental anomalies, where one or another normal tissue of the body is located in an atypical place for itself. The short literary review of choristoma of middle ear is presented in article. A rare clinical cases of salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear (5-year-old girl with left-sided conductive hearing loss of III degree) and glial choristoma of the mastoid (19-year-old man with signs of chronic suppurative otitis media of the right ear) are described...

Peribulbar osseous choristoma is a benign, solid nodule; it is a subtype of epibulbar choristomas (belongs to single tissue choristomas), consisting of pure bony tissues. Epibulbar osseous choristoma is the rarest subtype of epibulbar choristomas, with only 65 cases reported since the mid-19th century; so, the rarity of the disease drove me to report it. A 7-year-old female presented with a painless left ocular superotemporal mass, which was present since birth and located under the conjunctiva. The primary diagnoses included lipodermoid and subconjunctival foreign bodies...

OBJECTIVE: Neuromuscular choristoma (NMC) is a rare developmental malformation of peripheral nerve that is frequently associated with the development of a desmoid-type fibromatosis (DTF). Both NMC and NMC-DTF typically contain pathogenic CTNNB1 mutations and NMC-DTF develop only within the NMC-affected nerve territory. The authors aimed to determine if there is a nerve-driven mechanism involved in the formation of NMC-DTF from the underlying NMC-affected nerve. METHODS: Retrospective review was performed for patients evaluated in the authors' institution with a diagnosis of NMC-DTF in the sciatic nerve (or lumbosacral plexus)...

Tracheobronchial rests are a rare congenital anomaly where ectopic respiratory tract elements may be found in an abnormal site, such as within the esophageal wall. We present a case of a late presentation of an esophageal intramural tracheobronchial rest with complaints of pain in the left chest wall, vomiting, and loss of appetite for one month. The chest X-ray and mammogram were both normal, but an endoscopy could not be performed due to luminal narrowing. A CT scan shows a well-defined, round, non-enhancing hypodense lesion measuring 2...

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery worldwide. While retained lens fragments after cataract surgery are common, to our knowledge, there is no prior case report of the lens material being deposited outside of the eye. Here, we present a case of an elderly patient with an upper eyelid lesion containing a fragment of the basement membrane and proteinaceous lens-like material, initially mistaken as phakomatous choristoma. Phakomatous choristoma is a type of benign congenital tumor consisting of lens tissue, which is thought to be secondary to aberrant migration during lens formation...

Glial choristoma of the head and neck is a rare, benign congenital malformation consisting of a mass of heterotopic glial cells. In cases involving the upper aerodigestive tract, this can present with upper airway obstruction. In the acute setting, this can lead to diagnostic challenges due to the broad differential, as well as the additional difficulties in obtaining appropriate imaging and tissue samples due to the potential risk of airway compromise. We present a case of a neonate born with a large heterogenous mass involving the upper aerodigestive tract and multiple deep neck spaces which resulted in upper airway compromise requiring emergency surgical intervention in the form of a paediatric tracheostomy...

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular choristoma (NMC) is a rare peripheral nerve lesion characterized by abnormal presence of muscle within nerve. Associated desmoid-type fibromatosis (NMC-DTF) often develops. We report 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) characteristics of NMC and NMC-DTF and propose that increased FDG activity within NMCs may be associated with subclinical NMC-DTF or NMC-DTF "precursor" tissue. METHODS: Our institutional database was searched for all NMC cases...

REVIEW

Orbital dermoid cysts are benign choristomas that arise from the entrapment of ectodermal elements adjacent to the fetal bony suture lines. They are considered congenital, but not all are diagnosed at birth. They are the most common orbital tumors in children. While superficial dermoid cysts appear early in life, deep dermoid cysts remain clinically occult until adolescence or adulthood, when they enlarge and may cause proptosis, ocular and orbital symptoms, and even neurological symptoms. In addition, many deep orbital dermoid cysts present with chronic inflammation resulting from lipid leakage from the cysts...

Intraoral osseous choristoma represents a benign lesion of growing ectopic bone in the soft tissues of the oral cavity. It is considered as rare entity while fewer than 100 cases have ever been reported worldwide. Nevertheless, the pathogenetic mechanism that drives this abnormal ossification still remains controversial. In the present study a case of lingual osseous choristoma in a 50-year old male is presented. The patient was treated with surgical excision and no recurrence was observed. In addition epidemiology, clinical presentation, and pathogenesis are reviewed, serving as a reminder of this rare pathology...
