Acne is a common chronic inflammatory dermatosis that can lead to pathological scars (PSs, divided into hypertrophic scars and keloids). These kinds of abnormal scars seriously reduce the quality of life of patients. However, their mechanism is still unclear, resulting in difficult clinical prevention, unstable treatment effects and a high risk of recurrence. Available evidence supports inflammatory changes caused by infection as one of the keys to abnormal proliferation of skin fibroblasts. In acne-induced PSs, increasing knowledge of the immunopathology indicates that inflammatory cells directly secrete growth factors to activate fibroblasts and release pro-inflammatory factors to promote the formation of PSs...

In this editorial we comment on the article by Kalayarasan and co-workers published in the recent issue of the W orld Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery . The authors present an interesting review on the use of indocyanine green fluorescence in different aspects of abdominal surgery. They also highlight future perspectives of the use of indocyanine green in mini-invasive surgery. Indocyanine green, used for fluorescence imaging, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is safe for use in humans...

To systematically evaluate the effects of quality nursing care on wound pain and anxiety in burn patients. Computerised searches of PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Embase, Wanfang, China Biomedical Literature Database and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the application of quality nursing care to burn patients were carried out from database inception to October 2023. Literature was screened and evaluated by two researchers based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were extracted from the final included literature...

Traumatic diaphragmatic hernia is a sign of severe thoracoabdominal trauma that is often difficult to detect because of nonspecific presenting symptoms, delayed presentation, and distracting injuries. Diagnosis depends on imaging and a high degree of suspicion in patients who present with respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms after trauma, and prompt surgical repair is required. This case reviews a patient who presented to the emergency department with burning epigastric pain radiating to the left chest and hematemesis ~1 month after sustaining a blunt abdominal injury...

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of large-scale data on the factors that suggest an impending or underlying extremity pediatric acute compartment syndrome (ACS). In addition, literature regarding the timing of operative fixation and the risk of ACS is mixed. We aimed to describe the factors associated with pediatric ACS. METHODS: Analysis of 2017-2019 Trauma Quality Improvement Program. We included patients aged <18 y diagnosed with upper extremity (UE) and lower extremity (LE) fractures...

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the impact of consolidation of two rural level 1 trauma centers on adult trauma patients presenting to the remaining level 1 trauma center. To our knowledge, a study assessing the impact of trauma center consolidation on adult trauma patients had yet to be performed. METHODS: A single institution, retrospective study was conducted at a rural level 1 trauma center. Adult trauma patients who presented to our center from January 2017 to January 2022 were included...

Firearm injuries are a major public health concern with much focus on injuries due to violent crimes in urban areas. Less focus has been on self-inflicted injuries and rural settings. This study included 201 patients, of which 124 (61.7%) were accidental and 77 (38.3%) were intentional self-inflicted gunshot wounds (GSWs) sustained over 6 years at a rural level 1 trauma center. Injury severity scores ( P < .001), hospital days ( P < .001), and mortality ( P < .001) were significantly higher among intentional self-inflicted GSWs...

Diabetic foot ulcers complicated with lower extremity vasculopathy possess the characteristics of high incidence, slow healing, and poor prognosis, which may eventually lead to amputation or even life-threatening if not treated properly. The treatment of complicated lower extremity vasculopathy is vital to improve the healing process of diabetic foot ulcers, which has gradually received attention in clinical practice. Recently, a number of clinical trials on diabetic foot ulcers complicated with lower extremity vasculopathy were reported...

NovoSorb® Biodegradable Temporising Matrix (BTM) represents a novel dermal substitute and was evaluated in wounds deriving from different aetiologies and to highlight risk factors for poor take rates. METHODS: All patients treated with BTM at our department between March 2020 and October 2022 were included. Differences in univariate and linear regression models identified predictors and risk factors for take rates of BTM and split-thickness skin grafts (STSG)...

Wounds, which are becoming more common as a result of traumas, surgery, burns, and chronic illnesses like diabetes, remain a critical medical problem. Infectious bacteria impact the healing process, particularly if its biofilm (biological films) leads to a prolonged effect. Nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates in the field of wound healing due to their unique properties and versatile applications. New insights into the interactions between nanomaterials and wound microenvironments have shed light on the mechanisms underlying their therapeutic effects...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Burn injuries are the most severe type of trauma, with complex biological consequences associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Prompt recognition and management of burn-related complications are imperative for improving the vital and functional prognosis of the patient. Changes in biological parameters can be essential determinants in the prognosis of the burned patient. Thrombocytopenia in critically ill patients is linked to an elevated risk of mortality...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to evaluate any changes to hand trauma in the past three decades and through the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that improved consumer safety regulations, changes in access to care, and the impact of a global pandemic, among other variables, have significantly influenced the mechanisms and treatment of hand injuries between the 1980s, 2010s (pre-COVID-19), and 2020s (post-COVID-19). METHODS: A retrospective single-center review was performed at the only level I trauma center in Mississippi, identifying all hand trauma consultations between 2012-2019 and 2020-2021, compared to aggregated data from 1989...

Falls are the leading cause of hospitalizations following trauma nationwide, resulting in over 3 million admissions in 2020. This population is typically aged, and many are prescribed antithrombotic (AT) therapy. In this prospective study, we aimed to analyze fall history while assessing appropriateness of AT regimen relative to fall risk. Patients presenting following ground level fall (GLF) and meeting inclusion criteria during the study period were enrolled. Primary outcome was the relationship between AT therapy necessity (CHA2 DS2 -VASc) and fall risk (Morse Fall Risk)...

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing prevalence of burn survivors, a gap persists in our understanding of the correlation between acute burn trauma and the long-term impact on psychosocial health. This study set out to investigate the prevalence of long-term pain and symptoms of anxiety and depression in survivors of extensive burns, comparing this to the general population, and identify injury and demographic-related factors predisposing individuals to psychosocial compromise. METHODS: RE-ENERGIZE was an international, double-blinded, randomized-controlled trial that enrolled 1200 patients with partial- or full-thickness burns that required surgical treatment...

Severe burn injury elicits a profound stress response with the potential for high morbidity and mortality. If polytrauma is present, patient outcomes appear to be worse. Sex-based comparisons indicate females have worse outcomes than males. There are few effective drug therapies to treat burn shock and secondary injury progression. The lack of effective drugs appears to arise from the current treat-as-you-go approach rather than a more integrated systems approach. In this review, we present a brief history of burns research and discuss its pathophysiology from a systems' perspective...
