Diet plays an emerging role in dermatologic therapy. The ketogenic and low-glycemic diets have potential anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects, making them attractive for treating inflammatory skin conditions. We provide an overview of the current evidence on the effects of ketogenic and low-glycemic diets on inflammatory skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis (SD), atopic dermatitis (AD), and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). We conclude that low-glycemic diets show promise for treating acne, while the evidence for ketogenic diets in treating other inflammatory skin conditions is limited...

Background : Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a relapsing-remitting inflammatory disease characterized by the progression of asymptomatic nodules to deep-seated lesions and fistula formation that leads to suppuration and scarring. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new non-invasive imaging technique that carefully analyzes retinal microvasculature networks with high-resolution imaging. Recent studies have demonstrated that retinal vessel density and retinal perfusion reflect systemic inflammatory responses...

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory follicular skin condition that is associated with significant psychosocial and economic burden and a diminished quality of life and work productivity. Accurate diagnosis of HS is challenging due to its unknown etiology, which can lead to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis that results in increased patient and healthcare system burden. We applied machine learning (ML) to a medical and pharmacy claims database using data from 2000 through 2018 to develop a novel model to better understand HS underdiagnosis on a healthcare system level...

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder affecting the skinfold regions. There is growing appreciation of the need for socioeconomic factors to be included in multidisciplinary assessments of HS. However, knowledge regarding HS and workplace function is limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between HS and workplace function. METHODS: Cinahl, Embase, MedLine, PsycInfo and PubMed were systematically searched to collect data from studies in which validated surveys of workplace function were administered to HS patients...

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating chronic inflammatory skin condition that typically requires consistent care. Contributory factors to why patients with HS miss their clinic appointments have not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: This article seeks to characterise reasons that HS patients do not keep their appointments and identify strategies to minimise no-show rates and improve delivery of care to HS patients. METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed to online HS support groups...

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease with a considerable disease burden. Existing treatment options are limited and often suboptimal; a high unmet need exists for effective targeted therapies. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of spesolimab treatment in patients with HS. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, proof-of-clinical-concept study was conducted at 25 centers across 12 countries from May 3, 2021, to April 21, 2022...

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a severe, debilitating, chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurrent painful nodules, abscesses and draining sinus tracts in intertriginous areas. While this condition appears to stem from follicular unit dysfunction, its cause is multifactorial and the exact pathogenesis has yet to be fully elucidated. These factors make treatment selection challenging and contribute to variable therapeutic response among affected patients. Typical regimens consist of a combination of medical and surgical modalities, tailored to individual responses...

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a diagnostic delay of 7-10 years. A later diagnosis is associated with development of local sequelae and systemic comorbidities, as well as a reduced response to medical treatment. The aim of this study was to analyze the time required for HS diagnosis and investigate factors associated with diagnostic delay. METHOD: A retrospective observational study was conducted based on clinical records from HS patients followed at a tertiary hospital, with diagnosis between January 2006 and December 2022...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are often undertreated and require a multidisciplinary approach. In recent years, patent expiration has allowed the introduction of tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (anti-TNF) biosimilars, which have stimulated a significant increase in the use of biological therapies. This article reports the findings of a multidisciplinary approach to achieve a consensus on the use of adalimumab in patients with PsO or PsA. METHODS: A voting panel of 36 Italian dermatologists and rheumatologists were chosen by eight Italian clinicians (the Board), to provide a consensus on the real-world management of PsO and PsA with adalimumab using the Delphi Method, comprising three survey rounds...

CASE PRESENTATION: This peculiar appearance was observed in a 62-year-old male patient. It included multiple orifices and cavities forming the spongy aspect of the perianal skin with multiple cysts and giant comedones. Biosimilars are biologic agents the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has deemed to have no clinical difference from their reference biologics. In dermatology,  biosimilars are approved for the treatment of psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. Although dermatologists are high prescribers of biologics, they are more reluctant to prescribe biosimilars than other specialists. This survey-based study sought to characterize dermatologists’ current perspectives on biosimilars.  Methods: A 27-question survey was distributed via email to dermatologists between September and October of 2022...

Steven R Clark, Varun Soti
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes pain and discomfort in various body regions. This review explores the comparative effectiveness of two surgical techniques, namely, surgical deroofing and carbon dioxide laser therapy, in managing symptomatic HS, particularly in patients with Hurley stage I-III disease. We conducted a systematic literature search on PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov. The clinical evidence suggests that surgical deroofing and carbon dioxide laser treatment are effective strategies for managing symptomatic HS...
