Dysfunctional tear syndrome (DTS) is a common and complex condition affecting the ocular surface. The health and normal functioning of the ocular surface is dependent on a stable and sufficient tear film. Clinician awareness of conditions affecting the ocular surface has increased in recent years because of expanded research and the publication of diagnosis and treatment guidelines pertaining to disorders resulting in DTS, including the Delphi panel treatment recommendations for DTS (2006), the International Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) (2007), the Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) Workshop (2011), and the updated Preferred Practice Pattern guidelines from the American Academy of Ophthalmology pertaining to dry eye and blepharitis (2013)...

PURPOSE: To compare the bacteriological profile of meibomian gland secretion and conjunctival cul-de-sac in subjects with and without meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). METHODS: This hospital-based study enrolled 201 eyes from 201 MGD patients and 84 eyes from 84 age- and gender-matched controls. Samples from the conjunctivae and meibomian gland secretion were obtained. Both aerobic and anaerobic cultures were performed. Differences in the culture-positivity and bacterial strains between two groups were compared...

PURPOSE: To compare, in vivo, differences in meibomian gland morphology between children and adolescents. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients were included in this study and divided into two groups: children (n = 31; age range: 3 to 11 years) and adolescents (n = 39; age range: 12 to 18 years). Images of meibomian glands were obtained by infrared meibography and analyzed using ImageJ software (developed by the National Institutes of Health; available at http://rsb.info...

PURPOSE: To provide an initial retrospective evaluation of the effectiveness of a thermal pulsation system to treat intractable patient-reported dye eye symptoms following laser vision correction. METHODS: A total of 109 eyes of 57 patients underwent thermal pulsation therapy (LipiFlow; TearScience, Morrisville, NC) for the treatment of dry eye symptoms following laser vision correction. A standardized dry eye questionnaire, the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED II), was administered to all patients before and after thermal pulsation therapy...

PURPOSE: We aimed to compare the tear meniscus measurements using strip meniscometry (SM) and Keratograph5M (K5M) between 3 subtypes of dry eye disease patient groups, classified according to the presence of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and normal subjects. METHODS: We enrolled 145 eyes from 145 subjects and measured the tear meniscus using SM and K5M, tear film breakup time, ocular surface staining, and ocular surface disease index; the Schirmer test; and examined lid margins and meibomian glands...

For many years, blepharitis and dry eye disease have been thought to be two distinct diseases, and evaporative dry eye distinct from aqueous insufficiency. In this treatise, we propose a new way of looking at dry eye, both evaporative and insufficiency, as the natural sequelae of decades of chronic blepharitis. Dry eye is simply the late form and late manifestation of one disease, blepharitis. We suggest the use of a new term in describing this one chronic disease, namely dry eye blepharitis syndrome (DEBS)...

Meibomian glands are located in the eyelids and secrete meibum, which gives rise to the lipid layer of the tear film. Changes to these glands can lead to the development of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is associated with various ocular symptoms such as fatigue, dryness, burning sensation, and heavy sensation. The diagnosis of MGD thus relies on evaluation of ocular symptoms, meibum condition, and lid margin abnormalities. The recent development of noninvasive meibography and tear interferometry has provided important insight into meibomian gland structure and function, respectively...

Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between MGL and ocular symptoms, several systemic conditions, and key markers of ocular surface health. Methods. We included into the study 91 healthy volunteers between the ages of 20 and 77 years. We analyzed meibomian gland morphology, function, and lid margin alterations. We correlated our findings with self-reported ocular symptoms, systemic medical history, lifestyle factors, and tear film abnormalities. Results. We observed that a high ocular surface disease index, a history of either chalazion or hordeolum, experience of puffy eyelids upon waking, and foreign body sensation all appeared to be predictors of an abnormal meiboscore after adjusting for age and sex (p = 0...

PURPOSE: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) results from abnormal development of the ectodermal layer. Although coexistence of ED and retinal pathology has been described, concomitance with retinal venous tortuosity has not been reported in the literature. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: We report the case of a 23-year-old man with ED with bilateral retinal venous tortuosity, trichomegaly, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye. Although the coexistence of ED with trichomegaly and meibomian gland dysfunction has been previously reported, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of retinal venous tortuosity associated with ED...

Reduced horizontal length of the palpebral fissure is a distinctive characteristic of Asian eyelids, and aesthetic lateral canthal lengthening techniques have been performed for a refinement. The aim of this study is to describe a novel lateral canthoplasty using tarso-conjunctival advancement with a lid margin splitting procedure on the upper eyelids and to report the postoperative results. From December 2011 to June 2014, patients who underwent lateral canthoplasty using the tarso-conjunctival advancement procedure for aesthetic purposes were reviewed retrospectively...

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of eyelid hygiene in patients with chronic allergic blepharoconjunctivitis (ABC) as a part of their preparation for laser refractive surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 32 patients (12 males and 20 females aged 25-42 years) with refractive errors, namely, compound myopic astigmatism (23 patients) and hyperopic astigmatism (9 patients) suffering from chronic ABC and secondary dry eye syndrome (DES). All the patients initially received a standard treatment for ABC and DES, that is olopatodin hydrochloride instillations - 1 mg/ml 2 times daily, preservative-free hyaluronic acid preparation - 1 mg/ml 3 times daily, and polyacrylic acid and dexpanthenol gel at night for one month...

Treatment of allergic diseases of eyelids and conjunctiva (conjunctivites and blepharoconjunctivites) often presents difficulties due to peculiarities of their pathogenesis - allergic and vascular reactions, disorder of lacrimal production, meibomian gland dysfunction, and possible bacterial contamination. It has been suggested to use Ocumethyl, which contains zinc sulfate (binding, drying, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic effect), diphenhydamine hydrochloride (an Н1-antihistamine that decreases capillary permeability and helps resolve conjunctival and eyelid edema), naphazoline hydrochloride (a sympathomimetic notable for its strong, rapid, and long-lasting vasoconstrictive effect), and methylene blue (antiseptic effect, disintoxication, and antioxidant activity)...
