In our current research, a new type of functional nanocomposites known as poly(methyl methacrylate/ N , N -dimethyl aminoethylmethacrylate/( E )-2-cyano- N -cyclohexyl-3 (dimethylamino) acrylamide) [poly(MMA/DMAEMA/CHAA)] has been developed. These nanocomposites were created using microemulsion polymerization in conjunction with synthesized titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), and vanadium pentoxide (V2 O5 ) nanoparticles. To understand the physio-chemical characteristics of the poly(MMA/DMAEMA/CHAA) and the metal oxide nanoparticles (MOs) integrated within them, various analytical techniques were employed...

Chronic subdural hematoma (c-SDH) is a frequent and serious neurological disease. It develops due to hemorrhage to the subdural space, mainly caused by head trauma. The middle meningeal artery (MMA) plays a critical role in the supply of blood to c-SDH. The decision on the type of treatment for c-SDH depends mainly on clinical and imaging evaluation. In cases in which patients are critically ill, the hematoma must be evacuated immediately. For this purpose, surgery is generally accepted as the mainstay of treatment...

Microplastics (MPs) can act as carriers of environmental arsenic species into the stomach with food and release arsenic species during digestion, which threatens human health. Herein, an integrated dynamic stomach model (DSM)-capillary electrophoresis-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICPMS) is developed for online monitoring of the release and transformation behaviors of arsenic species loaded on MPs (As-MPs) in the simulated human stomach. The 3D-printed DSM with a soft stomach chamber enables the behaviors of gastric peristalsis, gastric and salivary fluid addition, pH adjustment, and gastric emptying (GE) to be controlled by a self-written program after oral ingestion of food with As-MPs...

The aim of this study was to observe the outcomes of newborn screening (NBS) in a certain population by using next-generation sequencing (NGS) as a first-tier screening test combined with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). We performed a multicenter study of 29,601 newborns from eight screening centers with NBS via NGS combined with MS/MS. A custom-designed panel targeting the coding region of the 142 genes of 128 inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) was applied as a first-tier screening test, and expanded NBS using MS/MS was executed simultaneously...

A new azo polymer containing photoisomerizable azo pyridine functionalities was synthesized via Mitsunobu reaction of 4-(4-hydroxyphenylazo)pyridine with poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (p(HEMA-co-MMA)) for creating new photochromic materials. The resulting polymer with azo pyridine side groups was characterized for structural, thermal, and optical properties. UV-vis, 1 H NMR and IR spectroscopies confirmed that all hydroxyl groups in p(HEMA-co-MMA) were substituted with azo dye. The obtained azo copolymer exhibited high thermal stability (around 240 °C) and a glass transition temperature (113 °C), promising for applications...

The amide-CTA (APP) is found to poorly control molecular weight evolution during polymerization of two methacrylates, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and N , N -(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), likely due to poor reinitiation speed in the pre-equilibrium...

Diabetic wounds are a difficult medical challenge. Excessive secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in diabetic wounds further degrades the extracellular matrix and growth factors and causes severe vascular damage, which seriously hinders diabetic wound healing. To solve these issues, a double-network porous hydrogel composed of poly (methyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) (p(MMA-co-AM)) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed by the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) technique for the delivery of potassium sucrose octasulfate (PSO), a drug that can inhibit MMPs, increase angiogenesis and improve microcirculation...

Novel porous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) silica nanocomposites have been produced by utilization of polymerization-induced phase separation in a simple one-pot approach. A facile free radical polymerization of MMA in the presence of surface methacrylate-functionalized silica nanoparticles was carried out in ethanol-based solvents, successfully producing novel, morphologically designable porous nanocomposite monoliths. Differing from standard free radical polymerization in solution, a mixture of good and poor solvents (ethanol/ N , N -dimethylformamide ratio) for the resulting polymer was used to trigger spinodal phase separation...

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) often requires surgical evacuation, but recurrence rates remain high. Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization (MMAE) has been proposed as an alternative or adjunct treatment. There is concern that prior surgery might limit patency, access, penetration, and efficacy of MMAE, such that some recent trials excluded patients with prior craniotomy. However, the impact of prior open surgery on MMA patency has not been studied. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent MMAE for cSDH (2019-2022), after prior surgical evacuation or not...

In this study, total homocysteine (tHcy) and methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels were analyzed in samples from 25 phenylketonuria (PKU) patients. Comparisons were made between pre- and post-treatment values (n= 3); on treatment values, between periods with high and normal/low phenylalanine (Phe) levels (n= 20); and in women before, during and after pregnancy (n= 3). A 24-year-old woman with hemorrhagic onset moyamoya disease received bilateral indirect bypass surgery 11 years ago. She presented with a life-threatening atraumatic acute right subdural hematoma with temporal lobe intracerebral hemorrhage due to a transdural anastomosis (TDA) aneurysm rupture. We reviewed six cases of rare TDA aneurysms, all of which occurred around the temporal base. TDA aneurysms may occur near the main trunk of the middle meningeal artery (MMA) where hemodynamic stress is high. Therefore, we must pay attention to skull base aneurysms that form near the MMA; otherwise, the prognosis would be poor if such an aneurysm ruptured...

While probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) enables rate and reach adaption with finer granularity [1], it imposes signal processing challenges at the receiver. Since the distribution of PCS-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals tends to be Gaussian, conventional blind polarization demultiplexing algorithms are not suitable for them [2]. It is known that independently and identically distributed (iid) Gaussian signals, when mixed, cannot be recovered/separated from their mixture. For PCS-QAM signals, there are algorithms such as [3], [4] which are designed by extending conventional blind algorithms used for uniform QAM signals...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: T-wave alternans (TWA) is a fluctuation in the repolarization morphology of the ECG. It is associated with cardiac instability and sudden cardiac death risk. Diverse methods have been proposed for TWA analysis. However, TWA detection in ambulatory settings remains a challenge due to the absence of standardized evaluation metrics and detection thresholds. METHODS: In this work we use traditional TWA analysis signal processing-based methods for feature extraction, and two machine learning (ML) methods, namely, K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF), for TWA detection, addressing hyper-parameter tuning and feature selection...

This paper analyzes the interplay between congressional politics, the actions of the executive branch, and hospitals' regulated Medicare payments. We focus on the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) and analyze a provision in the law - Section 508 - that raised certain hospitals' regulated payments. We show, via our analysis of the Section 508 program, that Medicare payments are malleable and can be influenced by political dynamics. In the cross-section, hospitals represented by members of Congress who voted "yea" on the MMA were more likely to receive Section 508 payment increases...
