OBJECTIVE: Same day discharge is safe after minimally invasive gynecology oncology surgery. Our quality improvement peri-operative program based on enhanced recovery after surgery principles led to an increase in same day discharge from 30% to 75% over a 12 month period. Twelve months after program implementation, we assessed the sustainability of same day discharge rates, determined post-operative complication rates, and evaluated factors affecting same day discharge rates. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of 100 consecutive patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery at an academic cancer center from January to 2021 to December 2021...

INTRODUCTION: To determine effects of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) on survival outcomes compared to surgery alone without AC for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients with variant histology (VH). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating AC for UTUC in Medline, Embase, the Cochrane library up to January 2023. Population, intervention, comparator, and outcome were UTUC patients with VH, radical nephroureterectomy with AC, radical nephroureterectomy only, and oncological survival, respectively...

Background: Indications for combined colon surgery together with other procedures include oncologic multivisceral resections and abdominal trauma. It is unclear if combining minimally invasive (MI) colon surgery with unrelated other procedures increases the risk for complications. Patients and Methods: The surgical database from two institutions during a 10-year period was queried for combined colon surgeries together with other interventions. All open cases, combined cases performed for one pathology and MI colectomies together with a minor procedure, were excluded...

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in the treatment of locally advanced NSCLC have led to changes in the standard of care for this disease. For the selection of the best approach strategy for each patient, it is necessary the homogenization of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, as well as the promotion of the evaluation of patients by a multidisciplinary oncology team. INTRODUCTION: Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder (PUB) is an extremely rare extra-adrenal catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumor, accounting for only 0.05% of all bladder tumors and 1% of all pheochromocytomas. The clinical presentation of PUB can be diverse and challenging to diagnose. Health care providers (HCPs) play a key role in psychosocial care of adolescents with cancer (AWC) and present a unique perspective. This prospective study included a brief survey followed by an interview, seeking to understand HCPs' viewpoints on peer support needs of AWC. Participants were 10 multidisciplinary HCPs with 5-30 years of experience. Three key themes found were: observations made and relationships with AWC; challenges to providing support; and potential peer support interventions. HCPs want to provide peer support resources but lack adequate information...

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs; ages 15-29 years) diagnosed with cancer are increasingly recognized as an oncology population with distinct psychosocial needs. However, few specialized psychosocial interventions for AYAs currently exist. This study reports on the development of a novel group-based psychotherapy intervention to address the psychosocial needs of AYAs. The objective was to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effects of the intervention...

Symptom management remains challenging in cancer care. Emerging from nutritional science, nutritional metabolomics has seen exponential growth over recent years, aiming to discern the relationship between dietary habits and health consequences. This protocol aims to present the rationale and methodology for conducting a scoping review to summarize the extent of evidence on synbiotics utilization in cancer symptom management among adults. The scoping review will be undertaken in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) principles and the research process guided by the PRISMA 2020 scoping reviews extension...

Uterine carcinosarcoma is a rare, aggressive tumor with several cases in the literature reporting cardiac tumor thrombus involvement. In this case report, we describe a 72-year-old female with a history of uterine carcinosarcoma, who presented with extensive thrombus in the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) and right atrium. The patient underwent an aspiration thrombectomy which aided in intravascular debulking of the thrombus. Histopathological analysis of the thrombus revealed tumor thrombus. In cryptic cases of tumor thrombus, thrombectomy with histopathological analysis can help confirm the diagnosis of metastatic disease and help guide oncologic staging and further therapy...

Giant supratentorial brain tumors (GSBTs) in children are uncommon and extremely challenging entities unique to pediatric neurosurgery. Factors such as young patient age, need for urgent intervention, intraoperative blood loss, and ongoing raised intracranial pressure symptoms are examples of difficulties faced. Recently, there has been a growing body of literature on augmented reality (AR) in adult neurosurgery. In contrast, the use of AR in pediatric neurosurgery is comparatively less. Nonetheless, we postulate that AR systems will be helpful for understanding spatial relationships of complex GSBT anatomy for preoperative planning in a timely fashion...

Currently, at Froedtert & MCW, there is a lack of established tools to collect metrics which demonstrate the value of a pharmacist-led oral anticancer program. METHODS: The purpose of this project is to establish metrics that reflect the interventions pharmacists are performing, and second, to develop a documentation tool which can reliably extract discrete data on the identified metrics...

Background: Providing end-of-life (EOL) care to pediatric patients and their families is challenging. BACKGROUND: Mutations in one or multiple genes can lead to hypodontia and its characteristic features. Numerous studies have shown a strong genetic influence on the occurrence of hypodontia, and identified several genes, including AXIN2, EDA, FGF3, FGFR2, FGFR10, WNT10A, MSX1, and PAX9, that are directly associated with dental agenesis and carcinogenesis. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence and pattern of tooth agenesis, microdontia, and palatally displaced canine (PDC) in women diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), compared to a control group of women without any malignancy or thyroid disease...

Endoscopic resection techniques enable en-bloc resection of T1 colon cancers. A complete removal of T1 colon cancer can be considered curative when histologic examination of the specimens shows none of the high-risk factors for lymph nodes metastases. Criteria predicting lymph nodes metastases include deep submucosal invasion, poor differentiation, lymphovascular invasion, and high-grade tumor budding. In these cases, complete (R0), local endoscopic resection is considered sufficient as negligible risk of lymph nodes metastases does not outweigh morbidity and mortality associated with surgical resection...

INTRODUCTION: Current management of metastatic prostate cancer (mPC) includes androgen receptor axis-targeted therapy (ARATs), which is associated with substantial toxicity in older adults. Geriatric assessment and management and remote symptom monitoring have been shown to reduce toxicity and improve quality of life in patients undergoing chemotherapy, but their efficacy in patients being treated with ARATs has not been explored. The purpose of this study is to examine whether these interventions, alone or in combination, can improve treatment tolerability and quality of life (QOL) for older adults with metastatic prostate cancer on ARATs...
