Understanding the effects of population diversity on cancer-related experiences is a priority in oncology care. Previous research demonstrates inequalities arising from variation in age, gender and ethnicity. Inequalities and sexual orientation remain underexplored. Here, we report, for the first time in the UK, a quantitative secondary analysis of the 2013 UK National Cancer Patient Experience Survey which contains 70 questions on specific aspects of care, and six on overall care experiences. 68,737 individuals responded, of whom 0...

Organic-shell-free PbS nanoparticles have been produced in the size range relevant for quantum-dot solar cells (QDSCs) by a vapor aggregation method involving magnetron reactive sputtering. This method creates a beam of free 5-10 nm particles in a vacuum. The dimensions of the particles were estimated after their deposition on a substrate by imaging them using ex situ SEM and HRTEM electron microscopy. The particle structure and chemical composition could be deduced "on the fly", prior to deposition, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with tunable synchrotron radiation...

Although human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) hold great potential for the study of human diseases affecting disparate cell types, they have been underutilized in seeking mechanistic insights into the pathogenesis of congenital craniofacial disorders. Craniofrontonasal syndrome (CFNS) is a rare X-linked disorder caused by mutations in EFNB1 and characterized by craniofacial, skeletal, and neurological anomalies. Heterozygous females are more severely affected than hemizygous males, a phenomenon termed cellular interference that involves mosaicism for EPHRIN-B1 function...

Chronic peripheral inflammation (CPI) has been associated with cognitive impairment in schizophrenia (SZ). However, its sources remain unclear, more specifically it is not known whether tobacco smoking is a source of inflammation or not in SZ subjects. Moreover, nicotine (NIC), the major psychoactive compound of tobacco, shows strong anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, as well as inducing a severe biological dependence when administered repeatedly. The objective of the present study was to determine if CPI was associated with tobacco smoking and/or NIC dependence in schizophrenia...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Triage imaging facilitates the timely recognition of acute stroke with prognostic implications. Improvement in MR acquisition speed is needed given the extreme time constraints before treatment. We compared an ultrafast Echo-Planar FLAIR sequence (EPI-FLAIR) and a conventional FLAIR sequence (cFLAIR) for their diagnostic performances and ability to estimate the age of infarction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between June and August 2014, 125 consecutive patients (age 69±18 years, 48% men) admitted for a suspicion of acute (≤48-hrs) stroke were explored by both FLAIR sequences at 1...

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and von Willebrand factor (Factor VIII) are important components involved in the regulation of vascular development and identification of endothelial cells in many tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of these substances in the placenta of pig fetuses located in different uterine regions and at different gestational ages and correlate them with fetal development. One hundred seventy-five pig fetuses from fifteen gilts slaughtered at 50, 80 and 106 days of pregnancy were used...

Clinical trials in psychiatry allow to build the regulatory dossiers for market authorization but also to document the mechanism of action of new drugs, to build pharmacodynamics models, evaluate the treatment effects, propose prognosis, efficacy or tolerability biomarkers and altogether to assess the impact of drugs for patient, caregiver and society. However, clinical trials have shown some limitations. Number of recent dossiers failed to convince the regulators. The clinical and biological heterogeneity of psychiatric disorders, the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics properties of the compounds, the lack of translatable biomarkers possibly explain these difficulties...

Limited performance of one dimensional chromatographic methods provides the incentive for the development of multidimensional chromatographic techniques for the analysis of complex mixtures. Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) represents such a complex sample, containing a range of phenolic compounds that cannot be separated and identified using a single chromatographic technique within a reasonable run time. By implementing NP high performance countercurrent chromatography (NP-HPCCC) in the first dimension ((1)D) and RP ultra-high pressure LC (RP-UHPLC) in the second dimension ((2)D), a highly orthogonal (∼80%) off-line comprehensive two-dimensional separation of rooibos phenolic compounds was achieved in a total analysis time of 17h...

2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is an important biorenewable building block, namely for the manufacture of new polymers that may replace existing materials derived from limited fossil fuel resources. The current reported methods for the preparation of DFF are mainly derived from the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and, to a lesser extent, directly from fructose. 5-Chloromethylfurfural (CMF) has been considered an alternative to HMF as an intermediate building block due to its advantages regarding stability, polarity, and availability from glucose and cellulose...

A mechanistic study of the isothiourea-catalysed enantioselective [2,3]-rearrangement of allylic ammonium ylides is described. Reaction kinetic analyses using 19F NMR and density functional theory computations have elucidated a reaction profile and allowed identification of the catalyst resting state and turnover-rate limiting step. A catalytically-rele- vant catalyst-substrate adduct has been observed, and its constitution elucidated unambiguously by 13C and 15N isotopic labelling. Isotopic entrainment has shown the observed catalyst-substrate adduct to be a genuine intermediate on the pro- ductive cycle towards catalysis...

The apolipoprotein family is structurally defined by amphipathic α-helical regions that interact with lipid surfaces. In the absence of lipid, human apolipoprotein (apo) C-II also forms well-defined amyloid fibrils with cross-β structure. Formation of this β-structure is accompanied by the burial of two charged residues, K30 and D69 that form an ion-pair within the amyloid fibril core. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate these buried residues form both intra- and inter-subunit ion-pair interactions that stabilize the fibril...
