Human females use numerous signals to attract male attention which can be ultimately motivated by enhanced paternal investment in the offspring. Sexual vocalization is a form of female sexual signaling. The majority of hypotheses attempting to explain the functional significance of vocalizations have been applied on non-human primates, while research on human females is scarce. This study investigated factors underlying sexual vocalization with a sample of 403 heterosexual Slovak females. Sexual vocalization was most frequent during penetration itself compared with other forms of sexual activities, which supports its signaling function...

BACKGROUND: Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible splenial lesion (MERS) is a clinic-radiological syndrome characterized by neurological deficiencies and reversible magnetic resonance imaging findings in the splenium of the corpus callosum. Usually, it has a good prognosis, and patients recover without any sequelae. A viral infection has caused most MERS cases, and bacterial agents have rarely been reported as a cause of MERS. CASE REPORT: A 5-month-old male was admitted to the hospital with fever, poor feeding, decreased activity and groaning...

Eurasian deer are characterized by the extraordinary diversity of their vocal repertoires. Male sexual calls range from roars with relatively low fundamental frequency (hereafter fo ) in red deer Cervus elaphus, to moans with extremely high fo in sika deer Cervus nippon, and almost infrasonic groans with exceptionally low fo in fallow deer Dama dama. Moreover, while both red and fallow males are capable of lowering their formant frequencies during their calls, sika males appear to lack this ability. Female contact calls are also characterized by relatively less pronounced, yet strong interspecific differences...

A lion's roar, a dog's bark, an angry yell in a pub brawl: what do these vocalizations have in common? They all sound harsh due to nonlinear vocal phenomena (NLP)-deviations from regular voice production, hypothesized to lower perceived voice pitch and thereby exaggerate the apparent body size of the vocalizer. To test this yet uncorroborated hypothesis, we synthesized human nonverbal vocalizations, such as roars, groans and screams, with and without NLP (amplitude modulation, subharmonics and chaos). We then measured their effects on nearly 700 listeners' perceptions of three psychoacoustic (pitch, timbre, roughness) and three ecological (body size, formidability, aggression) characteristics...

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Catathrenia is a rare disease, classified as isolated symptoms and normal variants under sleep-related breathing disorders in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders , third edition. Because of its rarity, the research on its pathogenesis and treatment is insufficient. This study aimed to evaluate whether the mandibular advancement device (MAD) could be considered an alternative treatment trial and if so, to explore factors predicting its effectiveness. METHODS: Thirty patients (12 men and 18 women, aged 16-67 years) with catathrenia participated in the study...

OBJECTIVE: Catathrenia is a sleep disorder characterized by nocturnal groaning sounds emitted during prolonged expiration. As a rare condition, its polysomnographic findings were inconsistent. We aimed to present polysomnographic characteristics of catathrenia patients and perform acoustic analysis of groaning sounds. APPROACH: Twenty-three patients (eight males and 15 females) diagnosed with catathrenia by video-polysomnography were included. They underwent clinical evaluation and physical examination, and answered a questionnaire...

The RARS2 gene encodes mitochondrial arginine-tRNA synthetase. Patients with variants of the RARS2 gene have pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 6 (PCH6), which is characterized by early onset seizures, progressive microcephaly, and developmental delay. PCH6 is a rare mitochondrial encephalopathy. To the best of our knowledge, the onset seizure type which the ictal video-electroencephalogram (VEEG) was compatible with early myoclonic encephalopathy (EME) has not been reported. Here we reported a term female neonate with EME caused by heterozygous variants of the RARS2 gene [NM_020320: exon10: c...

A 69-year-old man with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes presented to an outside hospital with altered mental status. He progressed from being argumentative to encephalopathic and agitated by the evening with urinary frequency, urinary urgency, nausea, and vomiting. His vital signs were normal, and he had no focal neurological deficits on presentation. He was generally encephalopathic, only groaning with no ability to follow commands. He was found to have diabetic ketoacidosis on initial labs. A left parietal hypodensity on CT Head was found, and he was positive for Sars-COV-2...

A female infant, aged 43 days, had shortness of breath, cyanosis, groan, and dyspnea since birth. Physical examination showed cyanosis of lips and three-concave sign, and multiple lung imaging examinations showed diffuse ground-glass opacities in both lungs. The girl was given anti-infective therapy and continuous mechanical ventilation but there were no significant improvements in symptoms. Gene testing confirmed a compound heterozygous mutation, c.1890C>A(p.Tyr630Ter)+c.3208G>A(p.Ala1070Thr), in the ABCA3 gene, with the former from her father and the latter from her mother...

The effects of a standard protocol for euthanasia on heart rate variability (HRV) as a consequence of stress response were analyzed in this prospective clinical study. The HRV was determined in 40 horses undergoing euthanasia due to various reasons, at different locations, and with/without owner presence. For euthanasia, horses were sedated with xylazine or a combination of xylazine and butorphanol. General anesthesia was induced using diazepam and ketamine. Afterwards, horses were euthanized with pentobarbital...

Catathrenia, also known as sleep-related groaning, is a relatively rare sleep disorder with characteristics consistent with loud groaning on expiration during sleep. Organic causes of catathrenia are unknown and the decision of whether or not to treat is unclear. Limited research is available concerning appropriate treatment and none of the literature focuses primarily on pediatrics. We report a series of three, male pediatric cases with catathrenia that were treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) while identifying and comparing clinical symptoms, polysomnogram findings, treatment, and patient response to treatment...

In clinical practice, involuntary vocalizing behaviors are typically associated with Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders. However, they may also be encountered throughout the entire tenor of neuropsychiatry, movement disorders, and neurodevelopmental syndromes. Importantly, involuntary vocalizing behaviors may often constitute a predominant clinical sign, and, therefore, their early recognition and appropriate classification are necessary to guide diagnosis and treatment. Clinical literature and video-documented cases on the topic are surprisingly scarce...

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the third most common endocrine disorder after diabetes and thyroid disease. Most cases of hyperparathyroidism remain clinically silent. The clinical manifestations of hypercalcemia captured in the classic medical student mnemonic of "stones, bones, groans, and psychic moans" are often not found. Sometimes patients can present with unique complications. This case describes perforated peptic ulcer as the first presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Gastrointestinal complications secondary to fish bone ingestion are rare, however important to recognize in timely manner to prevent morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis is often challenging in setting of non-specific and variable symptoms and lack of history of fish bone ingestion. Diagnostic imaging particularly computed tomography is crucial for diagnosis. However, emphasis should be given on identifying underlying cause of abdominal complications because fish bone is often missed unless specifically looked for...

Hypercalcemia is a potentially life-threatening electrolyte imbalance that is commonly caused by hyperparathyroidism, supplement or medication use, and/or malignancy. Splenomegaly is commonly a non-specific finding, but in the setting of hypercalcemia, may provide diagnostic insight into the underlying pathology and warrant further evaluation. A 70-year-old man presented from his outpatient provider with serum calcium > 15 mg/dL with complaints of one-month fatigue, weakness, poor oral intake, 10 lbs. unintentional weight loss, and periodic confusion noted by his wife...
