Unbilical cord

Xingyu Miao, Xiaoying Wu, Wei Shi
We investigated the intrathecally administrated unbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) by lumbar puncture and assessed the technical difficulties and effects in various neurological conditions. One hundred patients underwent subarachnoid placement of UC-MSCs between December 2006 and May 2010 in the Affiliated Hospital of Medicine. Technical difficulties in patients in the form of localization of subarachnoid space, number of attempts, and post-procedural complications were evaluated. Functional evaluation was done using Hauser Ambulation Index (HAI) by the stem cell transplant team on a regular basis...

First trimester fetal malformation screening still represents a diagnostic challenge in modem obstetrics. Being solely dependent on ultrasound instrumentation, and the skill and experience of the operator, recently improved by introducing high frequency transvaginal approach and digital image processing. This opens a new field of ultrasound in obstetrics called sonoembriology. Until now sonoembriology in routine clinical practice resulted in numerous reports about early detection of rare anomalies and uncommon syndromes...

UNLABELLED: From the historical point of view, cord clamping has been performed in natural child birth some time after the fetus has been delivered and after the expulsion of the placenta. In 1877 already Hayem could show that in late cord clamping (LC) the concentration of erythrocytes in the newborn blood is elevated if compared to early clamping (EC) of the unbilical cord. It was concluded that is was a result of placental transfusion. The underlying mechanism of the placental transfusion is the hydrostatic pressure between the placenta and the fetus, supported by uterine contraction and the time of cord clamping after birth...

1. Pleural fluid contained protein-bound hyaluronic acid, protein-bound chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, undersulfated chondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate. The composition of acid glycosaminoglycans in pleural fluid seems to reflect the rate of biosynthesis and degradation of these polysaccharides at some sites which are closely related to the pleural cavity. 2. A possibility was suggested that hyaluronic acid was synthesized in pleural tissue and was excreted shortly thereafter into the surroundings, as evidenced by experiments with rabbit pleural tissue...

Human endothelial cells prepared from unbilical cords are characterized in parallel by electron microscopy and indirect immunofluorescence microscopy using specific antibodies against different classes of intermediate-sized filaments. The strongly developed, loose bundles of intermediate-sized filaments typically found in these cells are not decorated by antibodies against prekeratin or antibodies against smooth muscle desmin. They are, however, strongly decorated by antibodies directed against murine "vimentin," i...
