This technical report illustrates the technique to perform computed tomography (CT)-guided bone biopsies in the body and dens of the axis (C2 vertebra) through a posterior transpedicular approach with the use of preoperative contrast-enhanced scans to highlight the course of the vertebral artery. The technique is presented through two exemplification cases: a pediatric patient with osteoblastoma and secondary aneurysmal bone cyst and one adult patient with melanoma metastasis. This case highlights the potential of the CT-guided posterolateral/transpedicular approach for performing safe and effective biopsies in the body and dens of C2, even in pediatric patients...

BACKGROUND: The critical role of radiographic assessment at the time of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) diagnosis is underscored by this study. We performed a retrospective analysis of radiographic changes in metastasis from the time of diagnosis of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) to CRPC diagnosis. We also explored its impact on prognosis post-CRPC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 98 men who underwent radiographic examinations (bone scans and computed tomography [CT]) at the time of CRPC diagnosis...

This study evaluated the ability of portable ultra-wide band microwave system (MiS) to predict lamb carcase computed tomography (CT) determined composition % of fat, lean muscle and bone. Lamb carcases (n = 343) from 6 slaughter groups were MiS scanned at the C-site (45 mm from spine midline at the 12th /13th rib) prior to CT scanning to determine the proportion of fat, muscle and bone. A machine learning ensemble stacking technique was used to construct the MiS prediction equations. Predictions were pooled and divided in 5 groups stratified for each CT composition trait (fat, lean or bone%) and a k-fold cross validation (k = 5) technique was used to test the predictions...

Developing a gradient porous scaffold similar to bone structure is gaining increasing attention in bone tissue engineering. The GelMA/HAP hydrogel has demonstrated potential in bone repair. Although 3D printing can build GelMA/HAP with porous structure, fabricating porous GelMA/HAP with gradient porosity and pore size in one step remains challenging. In this paper, a gradient porous structure with controllable pore size, based on gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and hydxroxyapatite (HAP), was engineered and printed using stereolithography...

The poor structural stability and conductivity of Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 (NVP) have been serious limitations to its development. In this paper, Sc3+ is selected to replace partial site of V3+ which can enhance its ability to bond with oxygen, forming the ScO6 octahedral unit, resulting in improved structural stability and better kinetic properties for the NVP system. Moreover, due to the larger ionic radius of Sc3+ compared to V3+ , moderate Sc3+ substitution can support the crystal framework as pillar ions and expand the migration channels for de-intercalation of Na+ , thus efficiently promoting ionic conductivity...

The HU values of healing fracture sites were compared to those of corresponding nonfractured (control) sites on the opposing side and cervical vertebrae sites in the same patients. BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of patients with a tibial shaft fracture sustain iatrogenic rotational malalignment (RM) after infrapatellar (IP) nailing. Although IP nailing remains the management of choice for most patients, suprapatellar (SP) nailing has been gaining popularity. It is currently unknown whether SP nailing can provide superior outcomes with regard to tibial RM. The aim of this study was to compare the differences in the prevalence of RM following IP versus SP nailing. METHODS: This retrospective study included 253 patients with a unilateral, closed tibial shaft fracture treated with either an IP or SP approach between January 2009 and April 2023 in a Level-I trauma center...

The patient was a 49-year-old male. He had a closed fracture of the pelvic ring that was treated successfully by avoiding anterior pelvic ring stabilization because of the presence of microscopic free air in the retroperitoneal space behind the pubic bone on initial whole-body trauma computed tomography scan. For his pelvic ring injury, transiliac rod and screw fixation was performed without the need for a pubic symphysis plate by developing the retroperitoneal space. His retroperitoneal abscess was treated by minimally invasive treatment of retroperitoneal abscess with computed tomography-guided percutaneous drainage...

Para -aminohippurate, also known as p -aminohippuric acid (PAH), is used clinically to measure effective renal plasma flow.
