Obesity is accompanied by the development of chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue. The presence of chronic inflammatory response along with metabolically harmful factors released by adipose tissue into the circulation is associated with several metabolic complications of obesity such as type 2 diabetes mellitus or accelerated atherosclerosis. The present review is focused on macrophages and lymphocytes and their possible role in low-grade inflammation in fat. Both macrophages and lymphocytes respond to obesity-induced adipocyte hypertrophy by their migration into adipose tissue...

BACKGROUND: Adipokines have a wide range of effects and are linked to sepsis and septic shock. The aim of the present study was to describe the changes in adipokine levels in septic patients in relation to patients' preseptic adipokine levels. Furthermore, we examined adipokines as prognostic markers. METHODS: Fourteen consecutive critically ill patients meeting the clinical criteria for severe sepsis or septic shock 3 days up to 1 month after major visceral surgery were enrolled prospectively...

OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease(CKD) is established CV risk factor, and already early renal impairment(RI) increases risk for hypertension(HT) and loss of renal function. It was reported that blood pressure (BP) and metabolic derangements are associated with glomerular hyperfiltration(GHF), and GHF increases risk of developing microalbuminuria (MA) in HT stage 1. Our aim was to analyze whether GHF predicts progression to HT and RI in apparently healthy subjects. DESIGN AND METHOD: Out of 954 subjects enrolled in ENAH follow-up study, 371 (137 m, 234 w; mean age = 46 years) were eligible for further analysis:100 with optimal, 72 with normal BP, 70 with PHT (high normal BP), and 129 with newly diagnosed untreated HT...

Weight gain and metabolic disturbances are common side effects during psychopharmacological treatment with specific antipsychotics and antidepressants. The antipsychotics clozapine and olanzapine, and antidepressants tricyclics and mirtazapine have a high risk of inducing weight gain. Recently discovered pathophysiological mechanisms include antihistaminergic effects, activation of hypothalamic adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), modulation of hormonal signaling of ghrelin and leptin, changes in the production of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF)-alpha and adipokines such as adiponektin, and the impact of genes, in particular the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R), serotonin 2C receptor (HTR2C), leptin, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) genes...

UNLABELLED: THE PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Analyze the basic data on the role of obesity in the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer (PC) and the modern mechanisms of this association. RECENT LITERATURE DATA: In the European Union and in Russia incidence of pancreatic diseases increases, such pancreatic cancer (PC) ranks 10th among cancer diseases. Obesity is a risk factor for not only of severe acute pancreatitis, but also PC at that independently of diabetes. In a meta-analysis the PC risk in obese increased by 47%, while the person with a central obesity have a higher PC risk compared to those with a peripheral type of obesity (odds ratio = 1,45, 95% CI: 1,02-2,07), but association between BMI and PC risk in this Japanese population may be different from that in Western populations, sometimes inversely...

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: In the present study, we investigated the associations between pre- and post-treatment levels of adiponectin, ghrelin, resistin, visfatin and leptin levels in malign and benign groups. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: 20 malign colon carcinoma groups and 20 benign groups were included in this study. Serum levels of leptin, adiponectin, resistin, ghrelin, and visfatin were measured by Elisa kits (Milipore Corporation, Billerica, MA, USA). RESULTS: In the malign group, serum ghrelin (71...

Examination of 55 patients with rheumatoid arthritis revealed low serum level of adiponektin in 25.4 % of the patients. Patients with low serum level of adiponektin demonstrate such symptoms set as: increased activity degree on DAS28 (II-III activity grade), high level of antibodies to citrullinated vimentin, advanced and late stages of the disease, severe X-ray changes.

The prevalence of bronchial asthma and obesity has grown in the recent decades. The mechanisms of these pathologies remain unclear despite a number of publications on the relationship between the two diseases. Analysis of the association of BA with obesity should take into account that both diseases develop in young children undergoing effects of breast milk and specific nutrients, intestinal colonization pattern (neonatal and early childhood), body mass at birth and it growth rate, sedentary lifestyle, and adipokine level in early ontogenesis...

Non-alcoholic steatosis/steatohepatitis is the most common etiology of abnormal liver function tests. Authors review the etiology, pathomechanism and clinical signs. Possibilities of the diagnosis are also summarized. There is an increasing need to find non-invasive biomarkers (TNF-α, adiponektin, end product of lipid peroxidation, cytokeratin-18, hyaluronic acid), score systems (Fibrotest, APRI), methods (Fibroscan), which would detect the progression of the disease, the development of inflammation and fibrosis...
