We report a case of multiple embolic cerebral infarcts associated with nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) in a patient with adenomyosis. The patient presented with dysarthria, left perioral sensory change, and left-hand weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple vascular territory infarctions involving the bilateral cerebellum and the right precentral gyrus. Magnetic resonance angiography was normal. d-Dimer, carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9, and CA125 levels were elevated. Abdominal and pelvic computed tomography with iodine contrast enhancement revealed a huge adenomyosis with left ovarian cyst...

OBJECTIVE: Benign mature teratoma during pregnancy is common, mostly discovered incidentally by antenatal sonography. However, repeated pregnancy coincident with ovarian mature teratoma is rarely reported. The cases of teratoma with rapid growing characteristics are even more unique. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old woman was pregnant at 6 weeks of gestation with a left ovarian teratoma. She underwent artificial abortion followed by surgical removal of the teratoma. However, eleven years after the surgery, a right ovarian teratoma was found incidentally by antepartum sonography at 21 weeks of gestation...

Ovarian torsion is a rare but emergency condition in women. Early diagnosis is necessary to preserve the function of the ovaries and tubes and prevent severe morbidity. Ovarian torsion refers to complete or partial rotation of the adnexal supporting organ with ischemia. It can affect females of all ages. Ovarian torsion occurs in around 2%-15% of patients who have surgical treatment of adnexal masses. The main risk in ovarian torsion is an ovarian mass. The most common symptom of ovarian torsion is acute onset of pelvic pain, followed by nausea and vomiting...

The giant ovarian serous cystadenoma is a rare finding and often benign. The use of the laparoscopic approach versus open approach for the management of huge ovarian cysts is controversial. We report a case of a 27-year-old woman with a history of increasing abdominal girth over a period of two years along with radiological investigations revealed a large tumor arising from the right ovary treated by complete laparoscopic extirpation of a giant ovarian cyst. The complete laparoscopic approach for huge cyst is a feasible treatment when having a normal tumor marker profile and benign imaging appearance...

Dermoid cysts account for 10-20% of ovarian germ cell tumors. Malignant transformation within ovarian dermoid cyst has been reported in 1-2 per cent of the cases. The treatment remains controversial. In women of childbearing age and in the first stages of the disease unilateral annexectomy without adjuvant therapy is recommended. In menopausal women extensive surgery is sometimes performed, no matter what stage of the disease the person is experiencing. We report the case of a menopausal patient with malignant transformation within ovarian dermoid cyst who underwent surgery...

Ovarian dermoid cysts are one of the most common benign neoplasms in women. Rectal fistula formation due to an ovarian dermoid cyst, particularly a benign dermoid cyst, is extremely rare. A 17-year-old girl with symptoms of lower abdominal pain, passage of sebaceous materials in the stool, and hematochezia was found to have an 11-cm dermoid cyst complicated with a rectal fistula formation. Laparoscopic repair of the rectal fistula was performed successfully with bilateral ovarian cystectomies. This case presents the rare formation of a fistula between a benign dermoid cyst and the rectum and its treatment using laparoscopic repair without laparotomy...

Gynecologic emergencies include various diseases that result from adnexal and uterine disorders. Adnexal disorders may be classified into the following three categories: (a) disorders that cause hemorrhage (hemorrhagic ovarian cysts and ectopic pregnancies); (b) disorders related to adnexal tumors (adnexal torsion and rupture of ovarian tumors); and (c) disorders related to pelvic inflammatory disease, such as tubo-ovarian abscesses. Unusual adnexal torsion, such as massive ovarian edema, isolated fallopian tube torsion, and paraovarian cyst torsion, has also been described...

BACKGROUND: Neonatal tumors are different from tumors of the older children and knowledge gained from treating older children can not be extrapolated to neonates. Neonates have immature physiology and their haematopoietic and immune systems are not fully developed and the response to therapy is unpredictable. Hence it is imperative to study these tumors as separate entity. The aim of this study is to analyse this rare set of tumors in terms of their incidence, clinical features and management...

A 19-year-old woman with a history of isosexual precocious puberty and bilateral oophorectomy at age 10 years because of giant ovarian cysts, presents with headaches and mild symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism. Hormonal evaluation revealed elevated FSH and LH levels in the postmenopausal range and free hyperthyroxinemia with an inappropriately normal TSH. Pituitary MRI showed a 2-cm macroadenoma with suprasellar extension. She underwent successful surgical resection of the pituitary tumor, which proved to be composed of two distinct populations of cells, each of them strongly immunoreactive for FSH and TSH, respectively...

BACKGROUND: We previously showed that microRNA-503 (miR-503) transfection into endometriotic cyst stromal cells (ECSCs) induced cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase by suppressing cyclin D1. This finding prompted us to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of cyclin D1 inhibitors in endometriotic cells. This study aimed to determine whether arcyriaflavin A, a representative inhibitor of cyclin D1-cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), is beneficial in the treatment of endometriosis. METHODS: ECSCs were isolated from the ovarian endometriotic tissues of 32 women...

Struma ovarii is a rare tumor, which accounts for 2.7% of ovarian teratomas and 0.01% of ovarian tumors. It usually affects women in the fifth decades of life and is most often detected incidentally during ultrasound and then confirmed histologically. The gold standard treatment is surgery and prognosis is excellent. We here report the particular case of a young female patient with giant struma ovarii whose radiological features were classified as unusual presentation. We match patient's data with those from the literature...

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cyst is a rare clinical entity especially in pregnancy; therefore, few cases have been reported in the literature. The standard method of their treatment is surgical excision either with laparotomy or laparoscopy. In addition, mesenteric vein thrombosis is a rare and life-threatening condition in pregnancy and needs immediate treatment because it can lead to intestinal necrotic ischemia. This is the first report of the coexistence of mesenteric cysts and mesenteric vein thrombosis during gestation...

This study aimed to determine whether the menstrual cycle affects operative bleeding and postoperative ovarian reserve in patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy. A total of 155 patients who had undergone laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy were classified into the follicular phase (n = 84) and luteal phase (n = 71) of the menstrual cycle. The primary outcome measures were operative blood loss and the rate of decline in ovarian reserve, as calculated by measuring serial serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively...

In dairy cattle, cystic ovarian disease (COD) is an important cause of subfertility, and two of the main signs are ovulation failure and follicular persistence. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of the cytokines IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α in ovarian follicular structures at different times of persistence in a model of follicular persistence induced by prolonged treatment with progesterone in dairy cows. Protein expression of IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α was evaluated by immunohistochemistry...
