Precise measurement of postvoid residual (PVR) urine volume is a key factor in assessing patients with voiding dysfunction, including those with lower urinary tract problems. The safe and noninvasive ultrasound bladder scan is the preferred mode to measure PVR volume. However, this procedure has a false-positive rate up to 9%, in the presence of ovarian cysts, renal cysts, ascites, or uterine myoma with cystic degeneration. Until now, cystic lesions are known to cause false positivity in ultrasound bladder scanner...

BACKGROUND: Tetrasomy X is a rare chromosomal aneuploidy seen in girls, associated with facial dysmorphism, premature ovarian insufficiency and intellectual disability. A Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) is a remnant of Rathke's pouch which may cause multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies by exerting pressure on the pituitary gland in the sella. METHODS/RESULTS: The patient was diagnosed with tetrasomy X by karyotyping during infancy. Brain MRI and multiple endocrine stimulation tests revealed RCC and combined pituitary hormone deficiency (growth hormone deficiency, secondary adrenal insufficiency and central hypothyroidism) likely due to RCC...

BACKGROUND: Freezing strips of ovarian cortex before chemotherapy followed by transplantation is an experimental method to preserve fertility for reproductive-aged women with cancer. We report a case of a cancer patient who developed a mucinous cystadenoma in a grafted piece of ovarian cortex. CASE: A 32-year-old woman with a Ewing sarcoma had ovarian cryopreservation using cortical strip freezing before receiving chemotherapy. Five years later she had no ovarian function, and the strips were thawed and grafted back onto the ovary...

Borderline tumors (BOT) of the ovary account for 10% to 20% of ovarian neoplasms. Like ovarian cancer, BOT encompass several different histological subtypes (serous, mucinous, endometrioid, clear cell, transitional cell and mixed) with serous (SBOT) and mucinous (MBOT) the most common. Current hypotheses suggest low-grade serous carcinoma may develop in a stepwise fashion from SBOT whereas the majority of high grade serous carcinomas develop rapidly presumably from inclusion cysts or ovarian surface epithelium...

We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with Salmonella serovar Schwarzengrund gastroenteritis acquired during foreign travel. Her case was complicated by superinfection of a pre-existing ovarian endometrioma with a quinolone-resistant organism; the resultant ovarian abscess ultimately required surgical removal for resolution. We review the key features of this case and the previous literature on Salmonella ovarian abscess. This report highlights (1) the potential for metastatic spread of Salmonella to the ovary in women with pre-existing cysts or endometriomas and (2) the increasing worldwide burden of quinolone-resistant Salmonella...

Borderline clear cell tumors are extremely rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case of borderline clear cell adenofibroma of the ovary in a 58-year-old woman who presented with a pelvic mass and constipation. Physical examination revealed a 10 cm solid midline pelvic mass. Computed tomography showed an 8 cm heterogeneous enhancing mass attached to the left posterolateral wall of the uterus. The patient's serum CA 125 levels were slightly elevated (80.9 U/ml)...

Intrauterine auto-amputation of the ovary is an extremely rare diagnosis in the pediatric population. Current literature is limited to contradictory recommendations, while a standard management protocol for auto-amputated adnexa secondary to intrauterine ovarian torsion is yet to be established. We report two cases of auto-amputation of the ovary, leading to a free-floating intra-abdominal cyst in the newborn. Laparoscopic management was successful in both cases.

Ovarian endometrial cysts cause some kinds of ovarian cancer, and iron is considered as one factor of carcinogenesis. In contrast, hypoxia is associated with progression, angiogenesis, metastasis, and resistance to therapy in cancer. We investigated hypoxia-induced perturbation of iron homeostasis in terms of labile iron, iron deposition, and iron regulatory protein (IRP) in ovarian endometrial cysts. Iron deposition, expression of IRPs, and a protein marker of hypoxia in human ovarian endometrial cysts were analyzed histologically...

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder and the most common cause of female infertility. However, the etiology of the disease and the mechanisms by which this disorder progress remain unclear. Here we report that a transgenic obese mouse (Mito-Ob) developed by overexpressing prohibitin in adipocytes develops polycystic ovaries. Initially, the female Mito-Ob mice were equally fertile to their wild-type littermates. Mito-Ob mice begin to gain weight after puberty, become significantly obese between 3-6 months of age, and roughly 25% of them become infertile by 9 months of age...

Ovarian cancer accounts for 3% of all female cancers and has a high mortality rate among gynecological malignancies. Early diagnosis carries a high survival rate of 93%. So, this study was carried out to assess the knowledge and awareness of Jordanian women about ovarian cancer symptoms and risk factors. A cross-sectional survey design was used; 896 women completed the survey. The mean of total symptoms recognized was low at level of 3.2 ( SD = 2.7) out of 10. The three highest known symptoms among women were as follows: extreme fatigue (43...

Internal hernia is a rare cause of bowel obstruction which often requires emergent surgery. In general, the preoperative diagnosis of internal hernia is difficult. The pelvic cavity has various spaces with the potential to result in a hernia, especially in females. In this report, we describe a patient with an internal hernia secondary to previous gynecologic surgery. A 49-year-old woman presented with acute abdominal pain and a history of previous right oophorectomy for a benign ovarian cyst. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed obstruction with strangulation and emergent laparoscopic exploration was performed...
