Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate clinical and laboratory characteristics of torsion on mature cystic teratomas (MCTs). In addition, we examined whether these factors could be helpful in diagnosing MCT torsion. Methods: A retrospective medical record review was conducted for 384 patients who had undergone surgery and histologically verified ovarian MCTs at single university hospital between July 2006 and May 2017. Patients with or without torsion groups were compared with respect to clinical presentation, laboratory findings and surgical course...

Long standing hypothyroidism presenting as an ovarian mass has been well described in literature as the Van Wyk Grumbach syndrome (hypothyroidism, isosexual precocious puberty and ovarian mass). Here, authors report this entity in a 11 y 7 mo old girl child who was referred to a surgeon in view of intestinal obstruction along with a multiloculated ovarian cyst. On evaluation, she was found to have raised serum creatinine, short stature, delayed bone age and pituitary enlargement. She was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis and was started on replacement therapy with thyroxine, after which the ovarian cysts regressed...

Malignant transformation of ovarian endometriosis was first described in 1925 by Sampson; later on it has been described in extragonadal regions by few authors also. Ovarian endometrioid and clear cell carcinoma are highly associated with endometriosis. Here we present a case of malignant transformation of ovarian endometrioma into endometrioid adenocarcinoma and review the clinical and pathological features of these tumors. A 45-years old infertile woman diagnosed as a case of bilateral chocolate cyst with pelvic endometriosis underwent total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy...

The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent ovarian pathology in women, with excessive sympathetic activity in the superior ovarian nerve (SON) playing an important role in inducing the PCOS symptoms in the rats and humans. Our previous studies have shown that surgical transection of the SON can reverse the disease progression, prompting us to explore the effect of the kilohertz frequency alternating current (KHFAC) modulation as a method of reversible non-surgical suppression of the nerve activity in the rodent model of PCOS...

A 27-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a 24-hour history of severe left iliac fossa pain associated with vomiting. She reported a history of ovarian cysts and was provisionally diagnosed with a ruptured ovarian cyst and admitted under the obstetrics and gynaecology team for further investigation. 24 hours later, she became haemodynamically unstable with increasing abdominal distention and developed a metabolic acidosis. A CT scan revealed large bowel obstruction (LBO) secondary to a faecal bolus in the sigmoid colon with appearances suggestive of adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ovarian endometriosis (OvE) is ovarian cyst that is lined with endometrial tissue. They are found in 17-44% of women with endometriosis. Their clinical manifestations include pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility. Although the incidence of OvE has increased yearly, the exact pathogenesis of OvE is still unclear. We used peptidomics, an emerging branch of proteomics, to identify differentially expressed peptides in order to determine the possible roles of these peptides in the pathogenesis of OvE...

Oog1, an oocyte-specific gene that encodes a protein of 425 amino acids, is present in five copies on mouse chromosomes 4 and 12. In mouse oocytes, Oog1 mRNA expression begins at embryonic day 15.5 and almost disappears by the late two-cell stage. Meanwhile, OOG1 protein is detectable in oocytes in ovarian cysts and disappears by the four-cell stage; the protein is transported to the nucleus in late one-cell to early two-cell stage embryos. In this study, we examined the role of Oog1 during oogenesis in mice...

We investigated contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) characteristics related to the perfusion pattern and parameters of the time-intensity curve of ovarian endometrial cysts (OECs) pre- and post-sclerotherapy. Forty-three patients with one-sided, single, untreated OECs underwent CEUS pre- and post-sclerotherapy. OEC wall thickness was measured by 2-D ultrasonography and CEUS, and CEUS enhancement patterns and time-intensity curve parameters before and after sclerotherapy were compared. OEC wall thickness remained essentially unchanged post-sclerotherapy...

PURPOSE: To explore variation in downstream relative costs associated with ovarian cysts incidentally detected on ultrasound. METHODS: For 200 consecutive incidental ovarian cysts on ultrasound, ultrasound reports were classified in terms of presence of a radiologist recommendation for additional imaging. All downstream events (imaging, office visits, and surgery) associated with the cysts were identified from the electronic health record. Medical costs associated with these downstream events were estimated using national Medicare rates...

Peritoneal lipofuscinosis is a very rarely recognized condition occurring during pregnancy characterized by brown pigmentation of the omentum and peritoneum, a decidual reaction and benign mesothelial cells. The iron negative pigment, which is likely to be confused with hemosiderin in the hematoxylin and eosin stain, is lipofuscin. The seminar case, apparently the third published, arose in a 37-year-old woman who presented in October 2015 at 24 weeks pregnancy with abdominal pain. Investigations revealed a ruptured left ovarian cyst and rising serum carcinoembryonic antige levels...

Massive ovarian edema is a benign tumor like lesion of the ovary. The widely accepted mechanism is disruption of vascular drainage resulting in accumulation of fluid within the stroma and enlargement of the ovary. We report a case of massive ovarian edema in a teenage girl with hemoglobin SC disease. A 16-year-old female with hemoglobin SC disease was admitted with right lower quadrant pain. An ultrasound and CT scan showed a large, heterogeneous solid, and cystic pelvic mass. Due to the size and the possibility of malignancy, the patient underwent a salpingo-oophorectomy...

This prospective study had the objective to compare anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) serum levels among women with endometriomas and those with other benign ovarian cysts and verify a possible correlation between the AMH post-operative decline and the achievement of pregnancy. The study included 57 women undergoing laparoscopic surgery. Serum levels of AMH were measured preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. AMH serum levels decreased in both endometriomas and other benign cysts, but significant recovery was reported only in endometriomas (p = ...

Dyslipidaemia and hyperglycaemia are associated with ovarian failure and both have been related to hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism promotes anovulation and ovarian cysts in women and reduces the size of follicles and the expression of aromatase in the ovary of rabbits. Considering that ovarian steroidogenesis and ovulation depend on lipid metabolism and signalling, the aim of the present study was to analyse the effect of hypothyroidism on the lipid content and expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) δ in the ovary...
