Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is considered a tumour with favourable clinical behaviour with only few reported cases of metastases. We report an infant who underwent complete resection and later developed pulmonary metastasis. Ten-month-old baby girl initially presented at 3 weeks of age with macroscopic haematuria, hypertension and a lumbar mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumour arising from the left kidney without local invasion or metastasis. She underwent left nephrectomy. Immunohistochemistry confirmed a cellular type of congenital mesoblastic nephroma...

The phrenic lymph node (PLN) has been described in bovine, equine, and feline anatomic references but descriptions in canine anatomic references are currently lacking. Authors have observed a well-defined, soft tissue attenuating, contrast-enhancing structure in a location consistent with previous anatomic descriptions of the PLN in dogs that underwent thoracic CT for neoplastic staging. The aims of this two-part, retrospective/prospective, anatomic, prevalence study were (1) to describe the presence of a soft tissue structure close to the thoracic caudal vena cava, defined as the presumed PLN, in a series of dogs that underwent CT as part of the staging for metastatic disease; (2) to confirm the lymphatic origin of the presumed PLN in a dog through postmortem examination; (3) to assess the prevalence of the presumed PLN in a population of dogs that underwent thoracic CT or MRI for different clinical purposes; and (4) to assess the possibility to visualize the presumed PLN with ultrasonography...

We report a case of descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) in a 68-year-old male who presented in acute respiratory distress accompanied with anterior cervical neck swelling and pain with swallowing. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the neck demonstrated a large, peripherally enhancing retropharyngeal fluid and air collection that appeared to communicate with a fluid and air collection within the mediastinum. CECT of the chest demonstrated punctate foci of air and fat stranding along the anterior and superior mediastinum...

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the role of screening computed tomography (CT) of the thorax in cardiac surgery by analysing the presence of CT aortic calcifications in association with changes in operative strategy and postoperative stroke, and the CT features of emphysema with development of pneumonia. METHODS: All patients who underwent cardiac surgery from January 2013 to October 2017 by a single surgeon were retrospectively studied. Patients who underwent screening CT thorax before cardiac surgery (CT group) were compared to those who did not (no CT group)...

Our study provided a comprehensive characterization of the thorax of Shirazi cats by comparing the relevant soft and bone windows of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with cross, sagittal and coronal sectional anatomy. We outlined the mediastinum and its anatomic relationships with the trachea, oesophagus, lungs, heart, cranial and caudal vena cavae, and other thoracic structures using the data series gathered from adult normal Shirazi cats. The cranial mediastinum extended from the thoracic inlet to the 4th intercostal space, the middle mediastinum extended from the 5th and 7th intercostal spaces and was occupied by the heart and large blood vessels and the caudal mediastinum extended as a short and narrow portion from the 8th intercostal space to the diaphragm...

OBJECTIVE: To characterize thyroid nodules seen on Spectral Detector computed tomography (SDCT) in respect to their Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) category on Ultrasound (US). METHODS: We included patients that underwent US examination for the evaluation of thyroid nodules and contrast-enhanced SDCT examination of the neck/thorax, between the years 2018-2020. The SDCT and US were performed within 6 months of each other. Only patients with a visible thyroid nodule on SDCT were included...

The model organism Drosophila melanogaster , as a species of Holometabola, undergoes a series of transformations during metamorphosis. To deeply understand its development, it is crucial to study its anatomy during the key developmental stages. We describe the anatomical systems of the thorax, including the endoskeleton, musculature, nervous ganglion, and digestive system, from the late pupal stage to the adult stage, based on micro-CT and 3D visualizations. The development of the endoskeleton causes original and insertional changes in muscles...

PURPOSE: There are limited existing data on the lymphatic anatomy of patients with primary lymphedema (LED), which is caused by aberrant development of lymphatic channels. In addition, there is a paucity of contemporary studies that use groin intranodal lymphangiography (IL) to evaluate LED anatomy. The purpose of this retrospective observational study was to better delineate the disease process and anatomy of primary LED using groin IL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified common groin IL findings in a cohort of 17 primary LED patients performed between 1/1/2017 and 1/31/2022 at a single institution...

BACKGROUND: The definition of oligometastasis is still controversial. Cytoreductive nephrectomy and metastasectomy are important approaches in selected patients with oligometastasis for improving survival. We aimed to present our laparoscopic metastasectomy experience in a rare case of contralateral adrenal metastasis in an oligometastatic kidney tumor. PURPOSE: Spectral computed tomography (CT) enables improved tissue characterization, although virtually all research has focused on contrast-enhanced examinations. We hypothesized that changes in myocardial tissue related to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) might potentially be identified without the need for contrast administration using electron density (ED) imaging. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study involved a small series (n = 15) of patients admitted to our institution with a first AMI without signs of hemodynamic instability and identification of a culprit vessel with invasive coronary angiography during the same admission, who also underwent a noncontrast, low-dose chest CT using a dual-layer spectral CT scanner...

Congenital heart diseases affect 1% of all live births in the general population. The prognosis of these children is increasingly improving due to advances in medical care and surgical treatment. Imaging is also evolving rapidly to assess accurately complex cardiac anomalies prenatally and postnatally. Transthoracic echocardiography is the gold-standard imaging technique to diagnose and follow-up children with congenital heart disease. Cardiac computed tomography imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis of children with congenital heart defects that require intervention, due to its high temporal and spatial resolution, with low radiation doses...

INTODUCTION: In veterinary medicine, airway management of cats under general anesthesia is performed with an endotracheal tube (ETT) or supraglottic airway device (SGAD). This study aims to describe the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to assess the velocities, pressures, and resistances of cats with ETT or SGAD. METHODS: A geometrical reconstruction model of the device, trachea, and lobar bronchi was carried out from computed tomography (CT) scans that include the head, neck, and thorax...

An elderly male, a former smoker, was evaluated at the pulmonary medicine clinic for recurrent episodes of streaky hemoptysis for the last 3 years. He had a history of being successfully treated for microbiologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis in the past. He presented in this consultation with two episodes of large volume hemoptysis, and the laboratory results suggested an ongoing active infection. Sputum smear was negative for an infectious etiology. Contrast-enhanced CT of the thorax revealed a lung cavity in the right upper lobe...

OBJECTIVES: Radiotherapy treatment planning relies upon density information provided by CT for accurate dose calculations. Hounsfield units are converted to electron/physical density via an energy dependant calibration curve. Multiple curves are required to make full use of the available accelerating potentials (kVp). The curves are bi-linear with a discontinuity occurring at soft-tissue densities. The commercial algorithm, DirectDensityTM (Siemens Healthineers), constructs a single calibration curve covering all available kVp...
