OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of 4-dimensional (4D) hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy) for assessing fallopian tube fimbria patency in infertile women. METHODS: Seventy-seven infertile female patients with obstruction at the tubal fimbria or partial obstruction with pelvic adhesions were included. All of the patients underwent 4D HyCoSy enhanced by dynamic observation after a flush of normal saline and were followed with laparoscopic chromopertubation using methylene blue within 6 months...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common human cancer. Because these tumors often affect the face, there is a strong need for both accurate removal of these neoplasms to prevent recurrence and maximal tissue preservation to prevent cosmetic or functional deformity. Polarization-enhanced reflectance and fluorescence imaging (PERFI) is a new bedside method that uses fluorescent chromophores to image NMSC. While the feasibility of the technique has been successfully demonstrated in ex vivo studies, this is the first pilot study to extend the use of PERFI to in vivo intraoperative imaging of NMSC...

The aim of this study was to prepare activated carbon from tobacco stalks using microwave heating. The prepared activated carbon was applied as an adsorbent in methylene blue (MB) removal from water. The optimum conditions for activated carbon preparation were a radiation power of 280 W for a period of 6 minutes after the impregnation of the precursor material with 30% ZnCl2 for 24 hours. The activated carbon yield and iodine number were 49.43% and 1,264.51 mg/g respectively. The activated carbon also had a point of zero charge of 5...

In the present work, we studied the reduction of gold ions into gold nanoparticles using Nigella arvensis leaf extract in the one-step green synthesis method. The formation of N. arvensis gold nanoparticles (NA-GNPs) was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, FT-IR and TEM analyses. The XRD pattern confirmed the crystal structure of NA-GNPs, and TEM image showed the small size (3-37 nm) and almost spherical shape of NA-GNPs. NA-GNPs have not shown enhanced antioxidant properties compared to the plant extract while they were active against the clinical isolated bacterial strains...

BACKGROUND: Midline nasal dermoid cysts are rare congenital anomalies that extend intracranially in approximately 10 percent of cases. Cysts with intracranial extension require a craniotomy to avoid long-term complications, including meningitis, abscesses, and cavernous sinus thrombosis. Current guidelines recommend preoperative imaging with either magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography to determine appropriate management. METHODS: Patients who underwent excision of a midline nasal dermoid cyst between January 1995 and September 2016 were identified using Current Procedural Terminology codes...

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are emerging as a biocompatible nanomaterial with multipurpose bioactivities. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were effectively synthesized using the aqueous leaf extracts of Parthenium hysterophorus prepared by microwave irradiation. TiO2 nanoparticles were fabricated by treating the P. hysterophorus leaf extracts with the TiO4 solution. Biologically active compounds such as alcohols, phenols, alkanes, and fluoroalkanes were involved in bioreduction of TiO4 into TiO2...

Tunicate, a filter-feeder in seawater, is able to accumulate high amount of metals using intracellular polymer matrices. The woven pyrogallol structures of tunichrome, a small peptide contained in tunicate's blood cells, is believed to be responsible for selective metal sequestration in tunicates from seawater. However, the intriguing tunichrome matrix is difficult to harvest from the tunicate nor to synthesize massively due to the extreme oxidation sensitivity of the pyrogallol moiety which limits the study scope...

Investigations on interaction between small molecules and DNA are the basis of designing advanced bioanalytical systems. We herein propose a novel interaction between heterocyclic aromatic compounds (HACs) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Taking methylene blue (MB) as a typical HAC, it is found that MB can interact with cytosine (C)-rich ssDNA in an enthalpy-driven process. The interaction between MB and C-rich ssDNA is sequence and structure dual-dependent: at least three consecutive C and single-stranded structure are necessary...

Polyethylene imine (PEI) microgels prepared via micro emulsion polymerization technique were treated with 1,3-propane sultone to obtained betainized PEI (b-PEI) microgels. The betainization reaction generated zwitterions on PEI microgel that are positive charges from quarternized amine groups of PEI, and the newly formed negative charges from SO3(-) groups from the modifying agent, 1,3-propane sultone offered interesting properties. The smaller size of b-PEI microgels that are obtained by simple filtration were increased with betainization from 512±14 to 1114±86nm...

A CdWO4/Bi2O2CO3 core-shell heterostructure photocatalyst was fabricated via a facile two-step hydrothermal process. Flower-like Bi2O2CO3 was synthesized and functioned as the cores on which CdWO4 nanorods were coated as the shells. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) demonstrate that the CdWO4/Bi2O2CO3 core-shell heterostructure photocatalyst possesses a large amount of oxygen vacancies, which induce defect levels in the band gap and help to broaden light absorption. The photocatalyst exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and colorless contaminant phenol degradation under solar light irradiation...

Cellulose is the natural biopolymer normally used as supporting agent with enhanced applicability and properties. In present study, cellulose isolated from citrus waste is used for silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) impregnation by a simple and reproducible method. The Ag-NPs fabricated cellulose (Ag-Cel) was characterised by powder X-rays diffraction, Fortier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stability was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis. The antibacterial activity performed by disc diffusion assay reveals good zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by Ag-Cel as compared Ag-NPs...

A sol-gel synthesis of nanocomposite adsorbent materials by dehydroxylation condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of xanthan gum (XG) using base catalyst and ethanol as co-solvent is discussed. The synthesized nanocomposite material was evaluated for their ability to adsorb cationic dyes - methylene blue (MB) and bismarck brown Y (BB) from an aqueous solution. The XG/SiO2 nanocomposite shows the ordered macro- and meso-porous structures and also exhibited large surface area, excellent chemical/mechanical stability and high binding capability for MB and BB dyes...

Coping with the increasing environmental issues, niobium oxyfluoride (Nb3O7F) as a novel semiconductor is a kind of promising photocatalyst due to its outstanding electronic and optoelectrinic properties. However, the photocatalytic performance of Nb3O7F is restricted in practical application due to its weak optical absorption and low carrier separation. In this work, novel Nb3O7F/WS2 hybrid nanocomposites with superior optical absorption and photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized by a facile two-step sol-hydrothermal technique...
