Epichlorohydrin cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres (ECH/CMC) obtained by inverse suspension method and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles encasing the ECH/CMC microspheres (M-ECH/CMC) obtained by two different methods were successfully prepared and compared. Their structures and morphologies were analyzed using polarizing microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption behaviors of M1-ECH/CMC for methylene blue (MB) in the single cationic dye wastewater, the cationic/anionic dye mixture in the absence or presence of co-existed additives (salt and surfactant) wastewater, were also investigated with UV-vis spectrometer...

In order to compare the catalytic activities of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphene oxide (GO), and graphene, we conducted oxidation of 2-aminothiophenol (2-ATP) and reduction of nitrobenzene (NB) in their presence by using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). In addition, we determined conversion rates of CO to CO2 in the presence of these catalysts by performing a residual gas analyzer (RGA) under a UHV condition, Orange II and methylene blue degradations UV-vis spectrophotometry, and electrochemistry (EC) measurements in an aqueous solution, as well as by obtaining cyclic voltammograms and determining the change of the condition of electrodes before and after the oxidation of 2-ATP...

DNA-binding properties of an antiviral drug, valganciclovir (valcyte) was studied by using emission, absorption, circular dichroism, viscosity, differential pulse voltammetry, fluorescence techniques, and computational studies. The drug bound to calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) in a groove-binding mode. The calculated binding constant of UV-vis, Ka, is comparable to groove-binding drugs. Competitive fluorimetric studies with Hoechst 33258 showed that valcyte could displace the DNA-bound Hoechst 33258. The drug could not displace intercalated methylene blue from DNA double helix...

Methemoglobinemia can cause life-threatening hypoxia associated with cyanosis and dyspnea not responsive to oxygen. We present a case of recurrent methemoglobinemia because of occult use of topical benzocaine to the vulva. A 47-year-old female with medical history of vulvar cancer and HIV undergoing chemoradiation was sent by the oncology clinic to the emergency department for worsening dyspnea, fatigue, hypoxia to 78% on room air, and gradual onset of cyanosis over the past week. A methemoglobin (MetHb) level was 49%...

Oral malodour is a common condition which affects a large proportion of the population, resulting in social, emotional and psychological stress. Certain oral bacteria form a coating called a biofilm on the tongue dorsum and degrade organic compounds releasing volatile sulfur compounds that are malodourous. Current chemical treatments for oral malodour such as mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine or essential oils, are not sufficiently effective at reducing the bacterial load on the tongue. One potential alternative to current chemical treatments for oral malodour is the use of light activated antimicrobial agents (LAAAs), which display no toxicity or antimicrobial activity in the dark, but when exposed to light of a specific wavelength produce reactive oxygen species which induce damage to target cells in a process known as photodynamic inactivation...

In this study, a new hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition surface was designed via visible-light-induced photocatalytic perfluorinated silica-based fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (FNPs)/TiO2. Perfluorinated silica-polydopamine hybrid FNPs (f-FNPs) were easily fabricated by carbonization in an emulsion system consisting of tetraethyl orthosilicate and dopamine, followed by the deposition of TiO2 on f-FNPs, which demonstrated the reversal from hydrophobic to hydrophilic nature during successful photocatalysis...

Methemoglobinemia can result from ingestion of nitrite- or nitrate-containing foods. Here, we report a case where an adolescent girl and her father developed clinically significant methemoglobinemia after ingestion of "homemade" beef jerky prepared with sodium nitrate salt purchased at a local grocery store. Both had palpitations, dyspnea, and visible mucosal cyanosis. The daughter had a methemoglobin level of 44.2% and the father's methemoglobin level was 34.2%. Prompt recognition of methemoglobinemia is important for initiating antidotal therapy with methylene blue...

Systemic vasoplegia is common in patients undergoing liver transplantation. In this report, we present a case in which treatment with conventional vasopressors caused peripheral arterial spasm, rendering arterial blood pressure monitoring impossible. Administration of methylene blue resolved the vasospasm; however, concern for toxic dose requirements limited its use. Hydroxocobalamin administration resolved the vasospasm and increased blood pressure without the potential adverse effects seen with methylene blue...

Polystyrene (PS) beads have been studied as a possible filter element, with the aim of increasing the effective production of water in treatment plants. Being a granular material of an effective size of 0.68 mm, sphericity of 0.96 and density of 1046 kg/m(3), the use of PS beads may provide washing water savings because they require low velocities for expansion during backwash. However, other aspects must be considered before the adoption of this material, such as the filtration mechanisms associated with it...

The paper reports the use of atmospheric non-thermal plasma torch as a catalyst for degradation of various organic pollutants dissolved in water. A flow of He mixed with air was used to produce the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), at the tip of the torch, using pulsed electric excitation at 12 kV. The torch, operated at a power of 750 mW/mm(2), was seen to completely degrade the aqueous solutions of the pollutants namely methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine-B (RB), at around 10(-4) M concentrations, the concentration of polluants is one order higher than of routinely used heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions, within 10 min of irradiation time at room temperature...
