BACKGROUND: The preferred vascular access for hemodialysis is a native arteriovenous fistula (AVF) because it offers the best results in the short and long terms, lower morbidity and mortality, and has additional advantages in relation to central venous catheters or arteriovenous grafts. However, obesity can present an additional challenge because of the barrier of subcutaneous cellular tissue covering the surface of the vein to be punctured. OBJECTIVES: The authors review their experience with excision of subcutaneous tissue (lipectomy) overlying upper arm cephalic vein arteriovenous fistulas in obese patients...

PURPOSE: A review of systematic reviews (SRs) and an update of the current meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) compared with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature was searched to retrieve SRs comparing DCBs and PTA for AVFs. A narrative review of SRs and pooled analysis were performed. RESULTS: Eleven SRs were included...

PURPOSE: Haemodialysis provides various options for vascular access, including native arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), arteriovenous grafts (AVGs), and central intravenous catheters. However, the use of catheters should be avoided due to their association with greater risks when opposed to AVFs or AVGs. AVFs have garnered strong endorsement as the favoured vascular access choice for extended haemodialysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 200 patients initially diagnosed with AVF/AVG dysfunction were referred to the radiology department across 3 different institutions...

BACKGROUND: Adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF) represents a prevalent and challenging complication after percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) treatment for osteoporosis vertebral compressive fracture (OVCF). Lower bone mineral density (BMD) and intervertebral leakage are reportedly independent risk factors for AVF. Vertebral Hounsfield units (HU) measured from computed tomography (CT) scans can evaluate bone quality. This study sought to explore the risk factors associated with AVF and analyze the relationship between AVF and the Hounsfield units of adjacent vertebrae (self-HU) following PVA...

We report a rare case of radial arteriovenous fistula in a middle-aged person after a successful transradial percutaneous coronary intervention. Early release of manual radial compression was the culprit behind the development of radial arteriovenous fistula. Early surgical repair of the radial arteriovenous fistula resulted in the complete resolution of distal forearm symptoms in the abovementioned patient. It is advised for young interventional cardiologists to apply a compressive bandage over the radial artery for a minimum period of one hour to get rid of this extremely rare complication...

BACKGROUND: High-quality chest compression is essential for successful cardiac arrest resuscitation. High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can effectively improve the survival rate of patients with cardiopulmonary arrest. However, bystanders untrained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation may provide inadequate chest compressions. Previous studies have shown that the use of feedback devices in training alone or in simulated cardiopulmonary arrest alone can improve cardiopulmonary resuscitation...

INTRODUCTION: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation during an inpatient hospitalization is often performed for patient convenience and to ensure compliance. We sought to evaluate whether this approach has comparable outcomes to outpatient AVF creation. METHODS: We identified patients undergoing index AVF creation from the United States Renal Data System dataset (2012-2017). Patients were grouped into outpatient and inpatient. Outpatient included patients that were operated in either an outpatient setting, ambulatory surgical center or were admitted inpatient on the day of AVF creation...

OBJECTIVE: A central arteriovenous fistula (AVF) has been proposed as a potential novel solution to treat patients with refractory hypertension. We hypothesized that venous remodeling after AVF creation in the hypertensive environment reduces systemic blood pressure but results in increased AVF wall thickness compared with remodeling in the normotensive environment. METHODS: A central AVF was performed in C57BL6/J mice previously made hypertensive with angiotensin II (Ang II); mice were sacrificed on postoperative day 7 or 21...

Dialysis access thrombosis is a common complication in the process of care. With the introduction of endovascular AV-fistulas [AVF]s the situation gained complexity with new potential thrombosis localizations. Several thrombectomy methods are available for recanalization of thrombosed AVFs ranging from invasive surgical methods to minimal invasive endovascular approaches. Early assessment, diagnosis and treatment is crucial for prolonging the life span of an AVF and preventing the need for placement of central venous catheters...

BACKGROUND: Introducing new procedures and challenging established paradigms requires well-designed randomised controlled trials (RCT). However, RCT in surgery present unique challenges with much of treatment tailored to the individual patient circumstances, refined by experience and limited by organisational factors. There has been considerable debate over the outcomes of arteriovenous grafts (AVG) compared to AVF, but any differences may reflect differing practice and potential variability...

BACKGROUND: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is increasing worldwide. BACKGROUND: Verbal fluency (VF) tasks are known as suitable for detecting cognitive impairment (CI) in Parkinson's disease (PD). This study thus aimed to evaluate the psychometrics and diagnostics of the Alternate Verbal Fluency Battery (AVFB) by Costa et al. METHODS: N = 192 non-demented PD patients were screened with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and underwent the AVFB-which includes phonemic, semantic and alternate VF tests (PVF; SVF; AVF), as well as a Composite Shifting Index (CSI) reflecting the "cost" of shifting from a single- to a double-cued VF task...
