BACKGROUND: Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC) which accounts for >85 % of all thyroid cancers in iodine-rich areas, appears either as a single tumor or as two or more, neoplastic foci within the thyroid gland (Multifocal PTC). We present the comparative results between solitary and MFC PTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographics, tumor characteristics (size, laterality, foci number, histologic subtype) and TNM staging were compared between solitary and MFPTC patients...

BACKGROUND: P53 isoforms originate from the alternative initiation of P53 gene translation through usage of an internal promoter located in intron 4. All P53 isoforms are spliced in intron 9 and may modulate cell proliferation and cell fate outcome in response to DNA damage. AIM: To examine immunoexpression of P53 isoforms in benign proliferative lesions occurring in multinodular thyroids and to assess the ultrastructural phenotype of P53 distribution in the thyrocytes of those lesions by electron microscopy...

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome increases after menopause; however, the role of concomitant subclinical hypothyroidism has not been completely elucidated. The aim of the study was to identify associations between thyrotropin, immune status, inflammation, and metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women. The specific goals were: to assess thyrotropin (TSH) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations in the serum of subclinical hypothyroid postmenopausal women with and without metabolic syndrome and compare them with euthyroid controls; to test whether immune status is related to metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women and determine the role of IL-6; to examine the relationships between TSH and different features of metabolic syndrome: insulin resistance, waist circumferences, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), BMI, metabolic parameters (triglycerides, total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6)...

INTRODUCTION: Medullary thyroid cancer is a rare carcinoma. Surgery is the only curative treatment and since cervical lymphnodes metastases are frequent and can occur at an early stage, a standardized central lymphnode dissection is associated to total thyroidectomy. However, the extent of lymphadenectomy to the lateral neck lynphnodes remains debated. To reduce the extent of lymphnode excision, the sentinel node biopsy has been used as an accurate technique to assess the status of the lymphnodes in the regional drainage basin in solid tumors, and more recently, in thyroid carcinoma...

INTRODUCTION: Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common form of acquired hypothyroidism. Fine needle aspiration cytology is one important tool in diagnosing Hashimoto's thyroditis, along with clinical, biochemical, immunological and ultrasonographical modalities. The present study examines cytological aspects of Hashimoto's thyroiditis along with their correlation with clinical, biochemical and immunological findings, whenever available. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 50 cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis...

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown an association between thyroid disorders and breast cancer. Among them, diffusely increased thyroid uptake of F18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) has been associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. There is little or no information regarding the relationship between treatment of breast cancer and the development of new diffuse thyroid F-18 FDG uptake. Here, we report the frequency of this occurrence and some of the factors associated with it. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography (CT) database and identified 290 women who had underwent PET-CTs both before and after breast surgery...

Serum calcitonin is a tumor marker used in the diagnosis and follow-up of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Calcitonin washout evaluation is a new method used for suspicious thyroid nodules and lymph nodes. Limited clinical data are present about the efficacy of this method. A 61-year-old female patient with known Hashimoto's thyroditis and an 8-mm hypoechoic nodule was presented with one previously benign fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). On referral to our department, she had a moderately high-serum calcitonin level, and we repeated the FNAC that was reported as nondiagnostic...

AIM: Elevated persistent value of antithyroglobulin antibodies (Ab-Tg) in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients may interfere with Tg determination. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of Ab-Tg as tumor marker as a replacement for thyroglobulin (Tg). METHODS: From 1990 al 2004 767 patients have been treated and followed, mean follow-up years 6.9+/-2.4. Thirty-two patients Ab-Tg positive after radioiodine ablation, who had showed during the follow-up stable indosable value di Tg, have undergone analysis...

Strain 13 histocompatible guinea pigs developed allergic thyroiditis after immunization with thyroid extracts derived from the same strain or from other strains of guinea pigs. This thyroiditis appeared as early as 5 days after immunization, and by 7 weeks was uniformly present and generally severe. 7 weeks after immunization, the anti-thyroid antibody titer correlated with the presence and degree of thyroiditis. However, at certain other times after immunization, the titer did not correlate with the thyroiditis...

A 59-year-old man diagnosed as having Hashimoto's thyroditis, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and membranous nephropathy (MN) showed consciousness disturbance, convulsions of the upper part of his body, and rapid progression of anemia, which seemed to be derived from subdural and retroperitoneal hemorrhage, respectively. He had been diagnosed as having eosinophilia about 6 weeks before the attack. Coagulation tests revealed a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time, which could not be normalized by mixing with normal plasma...

Experiments were conducted on six head of sheep of the Slovak Merino breed with average live weight of 40 kg. The sheep received 0.4 kg of industrially produced molasses feed M and 1 kg of meadow hay once a day. The feed ration for a head of sheep per day contained: 1177.58 g dry matter, 89 g digestible crude protein (SNL), 0.554 starch units. The animals had free choice of water. Rumen epithelium with submucosa was used in the experiment. Amino acid transfer was measured in a mucosa-serosa direction. Amino acids were dissolved in Thyrode's solution with pH value 6...

Human ovaries from adnexectomy were perfused via the ovarian artery with constant volume of Thyrode's solution. Perfusion pressure was recorded while doses of PGF2 alpha or PGF2 (2.5, 5 or 10 microgram/min) were infused for 10 min. During the 10-min infusion period an increase in perfusion pressure (delta mm Hg) was observed in proportion to the doses of PGF2 alpha. PGE2 in 2.5- or 5-microgram/min doses were ineffective, but its 10-microgram/min dose increase the perfusion pressure. However, PGE2 (4 microgram/min) infused continuously into the ovary inhibited the vasoconstriction induced by PGF2 alpha, whereas the vasoconstrictor effect of noradrenaline remained unchanged...

Autoimmune thyroiditis is characterized by lymphocytic accumulation within the thyroid which may be the result, in part, of immunomodulatory cytokine secretion by thyrocytes. We have tested human thyroid cell cultures (n = 9) for interleukin-6 (IL-6) release using two bioassays. IL-6 was detected in all culture supernatants under basal conditions and was increased by gamma-interferon, tumour necrosis factor and TSH in a dose-dependent manner. The bioactivity was confirmed as IL-6 by immunoblotting experiments and could not be accounted for by contamination of the thyroid cell cultures with fibroblasts, lymphocytes or monocytes...

The Authors describe a case, which came under their observation, of indifferentiated neoplasia of the thyroid associated with Hashimoto's disease; treated surgically by total thyroidectomy, at a distance of over four years it did not show signs of recurrence. Consideration is also given to pathogenetic and clinical problems, as well as those of surgical therapy, which such a combination between autoimmune thyroditis and a neoplastic process may raise.

Six patients with subacute thyroditis were followed with serial measurements of T4, FT4, TSH and RAI uptake. Five of the six underwent TRH stimulation early in the course of their illness. All six patients had elevated or high normal values for T4 and FT4 at the time of their clinical presentation (mean = 13.8 microgram per 100 ml and 3.9 ng per 100 ml, respectively). RAI uptakes were 1% or less in all six. TRH testing revealed a suppressed TSH response (mean deltaTSH less than0.1 muU/ml) in all five patients tested, suggesting hyperthyroidism...

In order to evaluate the effects of dibromotyrosine (DBT) on the thyroid function (already demonstrated in animals), thyroid tests were performed in 10 subjects with functional signs of thyroid hyperfunction, before and after administration of 1800 mg (600 X 3) of DBT for 10 days. The results show a mild decrease of the RAI uptake, but no significative interference on the thyrodal hormonogenesis. According to the author, the DBT seems to act on the hypothalamic centers regulating the thyroid function, due to its peculiar molecular components...
