BACKGROUND: Common surgical treatment options for isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis include arthroscopic procedures, total knee replacement and patellofemoral replacement. The HemiCap Wave patellofemoral resurfacing prosthesis is a novel inlay design introduced in 2009 with scarce published data on its functional outcomes. We aim to prospectively evaluate early functional outcomes and complications, for patients undergoing a novel inlay resurfacing arthroplasty for isolated patellofemoral arthrosis in an independent centre...

Model metal/ceria and ceria/metal catalysts have been shown to be excellent systems for studying fundamental phenomena linked to the operation of technical catalysts. In the last fifteen years, many combinations of well-defined systems involving different kinds of metals and ceria have been prepared and characterized using the modern techniques of surface science. So far most of the catalytic studies have been centered on a few reactions: CO oxidation, the hydrogenation of CO2, and the production of hydrogen through the water-gas shift reaction and the reforming of methane or alcohols...

Highly environment-sensitive fluorophores have been desired for many biomedical applications. Because of the noninvasive operation, high sensitivity, and high specificity to the microenvironment change, they can be used as excellent probes for fluorescence sensing/imaging, cell tracking/imaging, molecular imaging for cancer, and so on (i.e., polarity, viscosity, temperature, or pH measurement). In this work, investigations of the switching mechanism of a recently reported near-infrared environment-sensitive fluorophore, ADP(CA)₂, were conducted...

We present an alternative three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann collision operator consisting of a nonorthogonal basis of central moments. Our formulation is characterized by an intelligible derivation with a relatively simple and quite general implementation. It is successfully validated against several established, well-consolidated, well-defined benchmark problems, showing excellent properties in terms of accuracy and convergence. If compared to the adoption of the classical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook operator, our model possesses superior stability...

NMR analysis of the isotope incorporation in amino acids can be used to derive information about the topology and operation of cellular metabolism. Although traditionally performed by (1)H and/or (13)C NMR, we present here novel experiments that exploit the (15)N nucleus to derive the same information with increased efficiency. Combined with a novel Hα-(13)CO experiment, we increase the coverage of the isotopic space that can be probed by obtaining the complete distribution of isotopic species for the first two carbons of amino acids in cellular biomass hydrolysates...

Radical alkynyltrifluoromethylation of alkenes with actylenic triflones has been achieved. This radical chain reaction is initiated by a catalytic amount of an electron-donor-acceptor complex composed of Togni's reagent and N-methylmorpholine. This transformation proceeds under exceptionally mild and operationally simple conditions. A variety of alkenes are compatible in this protocol including aliphatic alkenes, vinyl ethers, enecarbamates, styrenes, and even acrylates, providing diverse β- trifluoromethyl alkynes in good to excellent yields...

Ferroelectrics based on proton tautomerism are promising in low-field and above-room-temperature operations. Here seven organic ferroelectric crystals are examined to search for efficient switching of strong spontaneous polarization on proton tautomerism. Solution-grown crystals exhibit strong pinning of ferroelectric domain walls, but excellent switching performance is awakened by depinning domain walls under thermal annealing and/or repetitive bipolar pulses with a high voltage. Compared with ferroelectric polymers such as polyvinylidefluoride, the optimized polarizations are comparable or stronger in magnitude whereas the coercive fields are two orders of magnitude weaker...

Fast and stable repair of segmental bone defects remains a challenge for clinical orthopedic surgery. In recent years, porous tantalum has been widely applied in clinical orthopedics for low modulus of elasticity, with three-dimensional microstructures similar to cancellous bone and excellent biocompatibility. To further improve bone the repairing ability of porous tantalum, the cyclo(-RGDfK-) peptide was coated on the surface of porous tantalum scaffolds. A model of 15 mm segmental defect was made at the midshaft of right radius in New Zealand White rabbits...

Accidental or intentional releases of toxic gases or vapors are the most common occurrence in hazardous material (HAZMAT) incidents that result in human injuries. The most serious hazard from exposure to gases or vapors is via the respiratory system. Dermal uptake, as a secondary route, is still a concern, most acutely for the unprotected public. There is a limited evidence base describing skin absorption of toxic gases and vapors in HAZMAT exposure scenarios, which are relatively brief compared with traditional test periods for skin absorption studies...

Importance: Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR) is an underrecognized cause of heart failure (HF) in older individuals, owing in part to difficulty in diagnosis. ATTR can result from substitution of valine for isoleucine at codon 122 of the transthyretin (TTR) gene (V122I), present in 3.43% of African American individuals. Objective: To examine whether serum retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), an endogenous TTR ligand, could be used as a diagnostic test for ATTR V122I amyloidosis...
