BACKGROUND: This educational innovation describes the implementation of a telehealth supportive counseling center for psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) students at a small graduate school. The free, nurse-run, health care center was at risk due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in-person care restrictions. METHOD: Due to COVID-19, PMHNP faculty and students pivoted to offer services via telehealth for the summer 2020 semester. Planning and implementation strategies regarding this pivot are presented...

OBJECTIVES: To explore the outcomes of threading the Patient-Centered Integrated Behavioral Health Care Principles and Tasks Checklist (AIMS Checklist) into the curricula and experiential setting. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory descriptive method with a constructivist epistemology was used to obtain in-depth student perspectives about their understanding, experiences, and process of applying Integrated Collaborative Care within the clinical setting. RESULTS: 24 Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Students (PMHNP) were divided into focus groups that yielded seven main themes and seven subthemes...

Describe areas for future research and policy development regarding telehealth in PMHNP practice and training during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Review current evidence, standards of practice, and education for the PMHNP. RESULTS: Recent rapid pandemic-related shifts in utilization of telehealth for clinical practice and student education have highlighted the advantages, disadvantages, and areas in need of additional study...

PURPOSE: Psychotherapy is the essence of the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) role. Yet much debate exists within programs as to the best way to include psychotherapy in an already loaded curriculum. CONCLUSION: Two large midwestern universities review their approaches to psychotherapy education; student evaluations measure the quality and effectiveness. Data revealed a high level of student satisfaction. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Programs will vary on how to teach psychotherapy skills, but the use of psychotherapy within the PMHNP role is crucial and informs the entire practice...

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health threat in the United States, affecting millions of individuals and families. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing recommends that nursing programs, both baccalaureate and graduate, provide students didactic training and clinical experience in the assessment and management of IPV. Our goal was to expose Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students to a simulated IPV scenario so they are prepared to respond appropriately to a survivor's disclosure of IPV when they begin clinical practice...

BACKGROUND: Few veterans with opioid use disorder receive effective treatment despite the Veterans Health Administration's efforts to expand treatment by offering buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD). An insufficient prescribing workforce contributes to the underutilization of buprenorphine; however, nurse practitioners (NPs) can now obtain a waiver to prescribe this medication. This quality improvement project aimed to expand the prescribing workforce by educating psychiatric mental health NPs (PMHNPs) working in an emergency setting at a Veterans Affairs Health Care System about free MOUD training and empowering them to utilize buprenorphine treatment...

A descriptive correlational design was applied to explore association among self-assessed depressive symptoms, job satisfaction and self-assessed empathy in 206 Greek Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Personnel (PMHNP). Depressive symptom intensity was associated with satisfaction from performed tasks (r = -0.157, p = 0.033), professional prestige (r = -0.255, p < 0.0001), relations with colleagues (r = -0.263, p < 0.0001) and empathy (r = -0.183, p = 0.013). PROBLEM: Despite knowing the importance of the early detection of adverse experiences, mental health disorders beginning or occurring during early childhood can be difficult to recognize. To address this gap, this manuscript describes the care of a parent-child dyad utilizing the nursing process in an illustrative case. METHODS: This illustrative case provides a scenario that includes the early detection of infant mental health (IMH) in primary care with referral to a psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse (PMHNP) and highlights how integrative care with PMHNP can facilitate the use of the nursing process to promote optimal early childhood growth and development and prevent long-term mental health problems...

As the demand for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) continues to grow, innovative teaching strategies that can enhance competency learning with skill transfer into the clinical setting is essential. Educational programs must adequately prepare the student for the complexity of the clinical environment. Simulation is an educational approach that replicates aspects of the real world in a safe environment so that learners can engage in an interactive manner. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) has been identified as an effective teaching strategy and mechanism to transfer knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to the clinical setting...

The longstanding partnership between the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing inspired the establishment of one of the country's first psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) residencies and subsequent formation of a Resident Continuity Clinic (RCC). Within the RCC, PMHNP residents deliver evidence-based care that is informed by measurement-based care (MBC) to improve patient outcomes and reduce time to recovery. Determined by the BVAMC Institutional Review Board to be a quality improvement project, PMHNP residents administered the Patient Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), a MBC tool that uses four independently validated screening tools to measure the behavioral health symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and alcohol use...
