In this work, we report synthesis and characterization of DenTimol, a dendrimer-based polymeric timolol analog as glaucoma medication. A timolol precursor (S)-4-[4-(oxiranylmethoxy)-1,2,5-thiadiazol-3-yl]morpholine (OTM) was reacted with the heterobifunctional amine polyethylene glycol acetic acid (Amine-PEG-Acetic Acid, Mn=2000 g/mol) via the ring opening reaction of epoxide by an amine to form OTM-PEG conjugate. OTM-PEG was then coupled to ethylenediamine (EDA) core polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G3 to generate DenTimol using the N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) coupling reaction...

PURPOSE: To describe a new technique for the treatment of keratoconus using corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segments (CAIRS). METHODS: CAIRS trephined from donor cornea using a double-bladed trephine were implanted into mid-depth femtosecond laser-dissected channels in the cornea of patients with keratoconus in the 6.5-mm optic zone, followed by accelerated corneal cross-linking (A-CXL)-either conventional or contact lens-assisted CXL (A-CACXL), depending on minimum corneal thickness...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in the corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth and posterior corneal curvature and aberrations after scleral lens wear in keratoconus patients with and without intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS). METHODS: Twenty-six keratoconus subjects (36.95 ± 8.95 years) were evaluated after 8 h of scleral lens wear. The subjects were divided into two groups: those with ICRS (ICRS group) and without ICRS (KC group). The study variables evaluated before and immediately after scleral lens wear included corneal thickness evaluated in different quadrants, posterior corneal curvature at 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm of corneal diameter, posterior corneal aberrations for 4, 6 and 8 mm of pupil size and anterior chamber depth...

This study was performed to evaluate the visual, refractive, and aberration measurement results of 2 implants, including Intacs Intracorneal Ring Segments (ICRS) and phakic Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (TICL), in patients with moderate Keratoconus (KCN). In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 30 patients with KCN with a mean age of 29.83 years were included in 2 groups, including the Intacs Intracorneal Ring Segments (ICRS) group and the phakic Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (TICL) group. Preoperative data as well as 6-month, 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year follow-up data after the operation were collected and analyzed with the SPSS software (ver...

We describe a surgical technique for the correction of isolated congenital lenticular coloboma associated with high corneal astigmatism. Transscleral fixation of the capsular bag with a single eyelet Cionni capsular tension ring was followed by in-the-bag implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL). This lead to complete correction of the lenticular defect and perfect alignment of the toric lens. In this case, the child attained an unaided distance visual acuity of 20/30 following amblyopia therapy and a well-aligned toric IOL at 12 months of follow-up...

Keratoconus is an idiopathic, non-inflammatory and degenerative corneal disease characterised by a loss of the organisation in the corneal collagen fibrils. As a result, keratoconic corneas present a localised thinning and conical protrusion with irregular astigmatism and high myopia that worsen visual acuity. Intracorneal ring segments (ICRSs) are used in clinic to regularise the corneal surface and to prevent the disease from progressing. Unfortunately, the post-surgical effect of the ICRS is not explicitly accounted beforehand...

BACKGROUND Liver transplantation is indicated for patients with Wilson's disease (WD) who present either with acute liver failure or with end-stage liver disease and severe hepatic insufficiency as the first sign of disease. However, almost all reported cases have been treated with death donor liver transplantation. Here we report the case of a patient with WD associated with fulminant hepatic failure (WD-FHF) who underwent living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). CASE REPORT A 17-year-old female was diagnosed with WD-FHF based on high uric copper (10 603 μg/day, normal <100 μg/day), low serum ceruloplasmin (15 mg/dL, normal >20 mg/dL) and Kayser-Fleischer (K-F) corneal ring, and acute liver failure (ALF), acute renal failure (ARF) and grade 2 hepatic encephalopathy (HE)...

PURPOSE: To assess the correlation between the scleral shape and corneal astigmatism. METHODS: Twenty-two participants (11 nonastigmatic and 11 astigmatic) aged from 19 to 36 years and with no previous ocular surgeries were included in this study. Three-dimensional (3D) corneoscleral maps from both eyes (44 eyes) were acquired using a corneoscleral topographer (Eye Surface Profiler). BACKGROUND: The purpose of this report was to describe a single case of recurrent interstitial keratitis in a young patient leading to keratoconus-like corneal changes. RESULTS: Over the 2 years follow-up, the patient developed clinical signs of keratoconus with Vogt's striae, Fleischer Ring and paracentral stromal thinning in the affected eye only. The tomographic measurements revealed a rapid reduction of corneal thickness from 581 to 303 μm and an irregular steepening of the pathological cornea...

The PITX2 (paired-like homeodomain 2) gene encodes a bicoid-like homeodomain transcription factor linked with several human disorders. The main associated congenital phenotype is Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome, type 1, an autosomal dominant condition characterized by variable defects in the anterior segment of the eye, an increased risk of glaucoma, craniofacial dysmorphism and dental and umbilical anomalies; in addition to this, one report implicated PITX2 in ring dermoid of the cornea and a few others described cardiac phenotypes...

Purpose: To evaluate the rotational stability of toric intraocular lens (IOL) when co-implanted with a capsular tension ring (CTR) as compared to that of a toric IOL without a CTR. Methods: This was a prospective randomized clinical trial performed in a tertiary care centre in India. Fifty adult human eyes with visually significant cataract and regular corneal astigmatism ≥1.5D divided into two groups of 25 eyes each, A and B by simple randomization. Eyes with corneal pathology, lens subluxation, and a specular endothelial cell count <2000/mm2 were excluded from the study...
